I'm home now, and searched my hard drive. I see now Hamlet hosted the Ellen Ullman event and Beryl was the first with a comment. It was "heh"

I just finished rereading the Ellen Ullman transcript maybe for the first time since I saved it and there are some classics. Here is one of them.
Ellen Ullman: Let me ask the people here: What would you be doing if you weren't in this simulated environment? James Miller: ...sleeping? Beryl Greenacre: watching TV, reading Cynnamin Moonflower: Playing in another simulated environment ![]() Nergal Fallingbridge: Probably still at work ^_^ jemma Flora: still doing something on the computer Hamlet Linden: Playing other computer games? Icon Serpentine: lol.. coding somethng. James Miller: I'd probably be searching for something similar. You: listening to music maybe Cienna Rand: In another one, yes ![]() Lauren Galatea: I'm technically teaching a course at this very moment... Lauren Galatea: Fortunately my students are all doing other things. Char Linden: neat Lauren! Ellen Ullman: FUnny: No one mentioned dinner with friends, talking to your lover, and so on. Hamlet Linden: Ouch! |

It was "heh" ![]() ![]() It was fun to have Ellen come to SL and talk to us. However, she seemed genuinely puzzled and a bit scornful of why we would all eschew real life for a virtual environment (as the quote you posted shows, Essence). But, it is good to have people visit SL who are not just raving fans of VR and MMOGs, it gives us all some perpsective on how the "outside world" views SL. Those of us who inhabit SL are actually a very small minority in the grand scheme of things. _____________________

The Second Life Book Club
04-03-2005 00:55
For anyone interested in the 'Book Club Idea': I am trying to get together all those residents, which would like to participate with the organisation of similar events like the ones, Hamlet organized with Ellen and Cory. I think it makes sense to take this into the hands of us residents, while Hamlet concentrates on one or two big events like the next one with Cory.
I think there are a lot of other authors, who would probably be interested in participating in such events (or just getting to know SL) if they only knew what an interesting society already formed in Second Life. So our first job is it, to contact these authors and get them interested - which should not be that hard, considering the creativity and resourcefulness of SLs residents ![]() If anyone would like to help - or just add a few ideas - please just go and join the group 'Second Life Book Club'. I am planning our first meeting next week - probably wednesday or thursday. I will use the voting system to coordinate the best time slot. If you have any further questions, just IM me inworld. Even when I am not online, I usually reply within a hour or so via email ![]() |

The first meeting of the Second Life Club is now scheduled for Wednesday, April 6th at 07:00pm game time. Everyone interested in this project is invited to attend - even if he or she should have not already joined the group 'Second Life Book Club'
![]() I'll try to be online a few minutes earlier (even though it is 04:00am for me LOL). IM me (Kim Charlton) around 07:00pm if you would like a TP! |

Marvelous news! Thanks much for taking the reins, Kim.
I've been impressed by Kim's fine efforts to put this group together, so I personally recommend folks who want a book club to join her burgeoning effort. Don't worry, it won't at all conflict with Cory's appearance; and hopefully, we can join forces for that one (along with everyone else interested in attending). _____________________

How many dedicated Jerry Pournelle fans reading this? The master of hard science fiction has a blog, and he just noticed Second Life and NWN:
http://www.jerrypournelle.com/mail/mail357.html If some Residents are interested in getting an SL Sci-Fi Book Club together and inviting Mr. Pournelle in-world to talk about his latest work (and/or his classics), I'd be happy to help you arrange and promote the event. (I've only read one or two of his older books a *long* time ago, so I'm not the ideal host to do this.) IM or e-mail me! _____________________

Rocking good news. I'll be sending an e-mail to Mr. Pournelle today or tomorrow, and directing him to Ms. Charlton and her group...

Book group?
09-10-2005 03:35
Hi
I just arrived in Second Life a couple of days ago and joined the Book Group but can't find any information. I visited the Starlight Cafe and checked out the forums. Can anyone give me any details? I am also a member of a real world book group and thought this seemed like a cool idea. Feidhlim |

Kim Charlton's in-world profile notes that she has left SL, though it says her account will continue to exist for a while since it was paid up for a year's worth of fees. So, something tells me this group is currently inactive.

Like I told Kim, I'm happy to help Residents who want to run a book club in-world and promote events with authors who show up to talk. That went for Kim, and goes for anyone else with similar enthusiasm!

I'm interested as well. We should try to revive the SLBC.
