I certianly would call Atwood's last book speculative fiction. It's very creepy in the way in mirrors the real world but puts a gloom and doom spin on it.

Everythingin the book has a creepy evil edge to it especialy the games and internet services she describes. I'd be very interested to see what she thinks of a virtual enviroment like this one that's of a more creative space than a distructive force

How bout Roger Williams, author of "The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect." TMOPI can be read online at http://www.kuro5hin.org/prime-intellect

Fans of VR / synthetic worlds will really have a blast with this story! I wont spoil it for you, but just let me say, "Damn, what a ride!"

The story can also be purchased in dead-tree form on a POD (print on demand) basis. You can get the book professionaly bound as a trade paperback from Lulu at http://www.lulu.com/content/20777

Check it out.

Oh, and if no one has suggested Grant Morrison, GRANT MORRISON! http://www.grant-morrison.com

I myself would vote for Michael Moore. Or.. Dan Simmons. He's great. If you havnt gotten a chance to read some of his stuff get a copy of Hyperion. Very cool. Or Hollow man

How about Brad King and John Borland, the authors of Dungeons and Dreamers: The Rise of Computer Game Culture from Geek to Chic ?

A very appropos choice since it it about the rise of games like Everquest, Anarchy Online (and of course Second Life) that evolved from tabletop role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons and such.

They might love an opportunity to have a discussion on their book in one of the worlds that is the subject of their book.

Bye bye for now,
Alexis

Is anyone here familiar with the writing of SF author
Charlie Stross? A possibility that he may be a good
candidate for the book club just emerged, but I'm
not familiar with his writing. If someone here is,
however, and is interested in conducting the interview,
let me know!

I haven't read him, but his bio page says his 2003 novel Singularity Sky was on the short list for a Hugo. Not that that means anything, but he could be a good choice.
On Amazon I found him as Charles Stross, not Charlie. but his website has him as Charlie.

His homepage:
http://www.antipope.org/charlie/

7 titles on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books&field-author=Stross%2C%20Charles/104-7323490-0669533

His writings look interesting! Book him!

Thanks for the info, Camille. My concern is, I've not
read any of his stuff, so it'd require a pretty hefty time
commitment to do that, in order for me to ask some
halfway decent questions. Another possibility is that
we bring a resident who *is* familiar with his work, to
do the actual interview. (Which I'll cover.) That would
rock.

Fear not, the book club is merely on hiatus, pending, well,
other stuff. For one thing, we'll be expanding the book
club to include creators in other medium, and should have
an announcement to that effect soon. Meanwhile, keep
suggesting book authors, and when the timing's right,
we will (and by we, I mean the Lindens and I) start reaching
out to the right writers once again.

More book/author events, please!
I nominate
Robert Sheckley
(http://www.sheckley.com)
and
Neal Stephenson (http://www.nealstephenson.com)

Both great authors, profoundly entertaining, but with a bit of whimsy.
