The London Times book section contained a review of Wicker by Kevin Guilfoil yesterday. The book centres on a geneticist who misuses cloning techniques to try to locate his daughter's killer. The reviewer Peter Millar said:
"...The other futuristic technological device that Guilfoil relies on is a computer game called Shadow World in which reality, including street locations and people (whether computer-generated or online 'avatars' of players) is almost perfectly mirrored. Again, that will sound hopelessly far-fetched only to those who have never flirted with Sims 2 or Second Life.

"Guilfoil has created a taut, fast-moving cautionary tale for the 21st century set in a world of which we are now, if you'll pardon the expression, already in the embryonic stages."

That "mirroring" of real life is almost exactly what Google is trying to achieve now. Some kind of variation on both 2nd Life and the yellow pages.

I've never flirted with SL - dived right in and indulged myself wholesale since day 1. I might have flirted IN SL though... :)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Interestingly enough, I was approached by Kevin Guilfoile's publicist about having a Doctorow-style book club around *Cast of Shadows*, the novel's name in the US (Amazon listing here.), with the author appearing in world to talk about it.

I've noticed SL mentioned quite frequently in Wired magazine.

Is it me, or is google taking over the world. soon we shall be known as the United States of Google.

I pledge allegiance, to the flag, of the United States of Google,

that cnn is using google-mapping on wolfy blitzer's 'situation room' (and probably other programs too) - i haven't had access to pc-capable tech to try googlemaps; is that, like, 'out-of-the-box' graphics that they're capable of, that large-region zoom-out/zoom-in stuff?? really, really neat - like david fincher with a usgs job. :)

they were doing it for the new crop of l.a. fires...

Not only is Google taking over the world, Google is helping Second Life take over the world. Thanks to the preference Google's search engine gives blogs and linked stories, New World Notes entries regularly show up toward the top of searches that ostensibly have nothing to do with SL. Just in the last few hours, for example, people have come to NWN after doing Google searches for "guns used in Chinatown", "mistress fashion", and "How long is the concord".

Google makes us all famous!

In kidding around one day, Kris Ritter said she Googled me and I said no way! Lo and behold, I Googled Misty Rhodes and was there... more than once. So I went on to Google other slers and they too came up.

So have fun and Google yourself today!

Yes, Google Earth is that good. It is amazing really and in just a few years I'm sure it will be unbelievable. The 3d buildings in major cities is utterly cool but the Grand Canyon is scary real. It actually blows Microsoft Flight Simulator graphics out of the water. With Google's money and SL's know how imagine the possibilities. Use Google Earth to find a location and zoom into a simulator of that area and walk the streets of New York or Red Square... I get all goose pimply just thinking about it.

Heck, I Googled myself and found Prokofy Neva considers me "would-be FIC", at least as of a couple months ago.

I'm actually kinda proud, although my philosophy on secret cabals, real or imagined, is somewhat akin to Groucho Marx and clubs. :D

Ok, I propose that Degree of FICness is now measured according to how many hits you've got at Google.

#1, of course, is Torley Torgeson. No surprises here :)

#2, also not surprisingly, is Chip Midnight. Well deserved!

#3 is Prokofy Neva ;)

Closely coming up to the 30,000 hit mark comes... Philip Linden. All the rest of the Lindens are below the 15,000 mark... hehe.

I have around 24,000 hits... yay. So, do I get a FIC badge? :)

Google is fun. I wonder how they come up with those hits... The interesting bit is that "Philip Linden" is more "famous" than "Philip Rosedale". That doesn't surprise me in the least. Just compare "Norma Jean Dougherty" (2000 hits) with "Marilyn Monroe" (6 million hits) :-) Pseudonyms tend to become more famous than real names...

So, how many of you are more "famous" in SL than in RL? :)
