... wandering the world for an entire day uninterrupted, meeting folks, investigating, attending-- and if duty calls, preventing imminent terorrist threats like Keifer Sutherland. (Well OK, probably not that.)

I'll be posting this next week in NWN, but I wanted my forum readers to get an abbreviated sneak preview:
I'll be spending 24 contiguous hours in-world, from next Wednesday, 6am (PST) to Thursday, 6am (PST). With no other media or communication unrelated to Second Life allowed. No web browsing, no e-mail, no TV, no radio. And no leaving the computer—or the house—for any reason, except for 5 minute bathroom/exercise/meal breaks. I'll be writing an hourly journal-style entries every hour on the hour, to be sent as a notecard to volunteer residents, who’ll post them in the NWN forum. I'll also try to meet 50 previously unacquainted residents, and briefly profile each—one from each state in the US. And visit twenty four businesses, twenty four homes, and attend twenty four social gatherings of five or more residents, each on different simulators. (Keep that in mind, if you're planning to be in-world that day!) So any volunteers? So right now, I need volunteers who'll post my notecard entries in this topic. I don't expect people to stay in-world 24 hours with me, so maybe we could do it in 6 shifts (for example, 7am-11am, 11am-3pm, 3pm-7pm, 7pm-11pm, 11pm-3am, 3am-6am), East Coasters and non-US residents taking up the slack of the late night shifts. |

"Unaquainted"= "I haven't got your card yet." I was going to say "new residents", but I often meet folks who've actually been online for quite awhile. I'm always, "Where *you* been hiding?!"
Cool, Sean, thanks much! Basically, you and other volunteers just need to IM me at the top of those hours you're available, and I'll send you that hour's notecard. (I'm gonna try to avoid looking at any clocks, in fact I'll cover them up in the house, as to totally be running on SL time.) |

You know me, but you haven't profiled or written anything 'bout me.
I'll be on from 7pm to 11pm. _____________________

Thanks!
I know, Darwin, I've been meaning to write something about our favorite Victorian naturalist, but just haven't found the right angle/timing, yet. Never fear, though, we shall... |

We're already aquainted, but if you need volunteers for the afternoon shift I'd love to help out.

Thanks, Cailyn and Kelwyn! I'll have to make a list of folks who can post my entries, and when.
Come to think of it, would anyone be interested in creating a *24*-like challenge for me? Plant a bomb somewhere in Second Life, for example, and give me a bunch of clues that require me to go all over the world and talk with various people and visit various places, and give me those 24 hours to find and defuse the device, before it explodes at 6am on Thursday? And if I don't, the bomb is triggered and, I dunno, shoots fireworks and confetti, or some other non-griefing wackiness. If someone wants to be the Evil Genius to my Jack Bauer, IM or e-mail me! |

Hmm Hamlet, as I understand it you dont actually *play* that much, do you? You just write for the NWN, yes?
I have a good idea for a series of articles... dont know if you have ever done something similar but why not make an undercover trial user, go through prelude, welcome area, attend some mentor and instructor events, find some land and settle down, meet the neighbors, and then use your professional journalist skills to impartially recount your experiences as a noob, focusing on what could be improved about SL and the new user experience in general? |

I can see the title of that series now: "Noob Like Me" I like that idea... as "Hamlet Linden", you're too well known inworld (and constantly IMed I imagine)... but as "Joe Avatar", you can walk around freely and actually experience SL in a whole new way. Bye bye for now, Alexis |

That is a good idea, and one I've actually considered before.
The trouble is, there's some ethical issues involved, in the sense that I work for the Lindens, and I'd be violating people's trust, if I were to pretend otherwise. (This is such a weird new realm, talking about journalistic ethics in an online world!) Another issue for something like this is that I'm well versed with the world and its inhabitants, and that would prevent me from seeing it with fresh eyes, as it were. So all that in mind, it's actually a great idea for someone else to do, in a blog or an in-world journal, for example-- and it's certainly something I'd be interested in giving coverage to, in NWN. Someone wants to take of those reins, let me know! Meanwhile, still looking for volunteers, either for posting entries here, or planting a bomb somewhere... |

Hamlet, I can be around to help post notecards from 6-8:30 am, from noon to 5 pm and from 8 pm to, hmmm.... 2 am or thereabouts. Lemme know if you can use me on any shift.
With the two SL radio stations and the TS channel in-world now, too, it might be interesting to hear some commentary from you on the various SL media ventures. |

Thanks, Beryl!
That's a good idea, with the radio channels. Remind me again, please, what are the URLs to get those? I don't have a mic hookup at home, so I wouldn't be able to do an interview that way, though I'm definitely available to chat/IM with DJs, if they're interested... |

I'll set up a 24-like challenge for you, Hamlet. IM me in world and I can see what concepts may work, eh?

I've got a dentist appt in the morning, but I'm EST, so I'll be out in time to work the 11am-3pm shift. So I'm volunteering.
Should probably be a good idea to have each shift IM the next shift as a friendly reminder ![]() |
