From: Michael Bigwig how I fixed it on my Powerbook G4 was to disable voice BEFORE I logged in. Then it stopped crashing. Not that I needed a another reason to avoid Voice, but this is good to know.

Hardware vs Software
08-09-2007 09:30
Well...I have used Bootcamp and bought Vista....it does not help....at least, it does not help me. Sometimes things work....most times they do not. Freezing up.....crashing.....not a way to run a railroad......

From: Michael Bigwig Mine did that too...I didn't read all these posts, but how I fixed it on my Powerbook G4 was to disable voice BEFORE I logged in. Then it stopped crashing.
That stinks I know...but some MAC users will have to be without voice until the next patch (let's hope). I disabled voice before logging in and now only crash ever 15-20 min rather than every 7-10 min. Some improvement. Is LL working on the Mac version bugs? Does anyone know? Edit: I filed a ticket on this. Are those of you with Premium memberships doing the same?

Well, I've been experimenting with SL on my new MacBook Pro.
I've installed Microsoft Visa (via Parallels) and SL runs fine but it's SLOW.
When I run SL in the OSX, I've found that I can cut the crashes down to maybe one a night (sometimes two). The trick has been to get rid of whole cache folder, not just empty it via the preferences. Go into your Home directory, to Library, to Application Support, to SL, and drag the whole cache folder to the trash. I leave this window open so that after a crash, I can chuck the folder and log back on.
It's a trade off. Speed and a crash each evening or No crash and slow.

From: Rusalka Writer Is anybody trying Repair Permissions? LOL why would that have anything to do with it? Anyway why does Mac OS X not repair its own permissions automatically.. this seems a major flaw in the OS. I've never heard anyone say, "Break your permissions." If clearly permissions should always be repaired, why doesn't it just repair them automatically in the background every so often? It's retarded. Anyway yes I tried that and also repairing the disk. It's not the permissions.

Call to Apple Tech Support
08-25-2007 10:59
I called Apple on this. After talking for a while, the guy said "We don't support specific third-party programs. If the program overheats the mac or locks up the operating system, but other programs work fine, then we have a simple solution: Remove the offending program."
I was pretty surprised, cause this means that they really don't guarantee that the Mac will run anything but Apple supplied software (he agreed with me on this). But I guess there's not much they can do.
I'll go back to Windows.

I had a hell of a time with crashes. The common denominator was full-screen mode (note: I'm on a non-pro MB). Ever since I started running in windowed mode, "maximized" the crashes stopped. The only real estate I'm losing is the dock area and the menu on the top.
I'll get the odd SL crash, but the freeze-the-mac-forcing-a-reboot crashes have gone away.

Given that every other application of note I use, including several OGL intensive games, do not cause this issue -- simply fingerpointing and saying 'It's their driver' is kinda childish. This reeks of the same excuses back when everyone said SL and ATI was defective under Windows several years ago. I know rather well that SL is getting more unstable as releases go along. One of the machines I have is a G5 iMac that I have been using for years now. It has never really been updated or touched beyond a 10.4 install and the bare minimum updates required, yet SL went from being a solid enough stable performer to slow and crash-prone over time and it was never able to be traced to anything in particular I did. It's very much a canary in the mine for me.
This will likely turn into a similar debate like the Unsanity APE crap, but it's simple enough. From the end-user perspective, when your program is the odd one out it's *your fault*, even if it's your bug hitting someone else's bug.

I'll go back to Windows. Because we all know Microsoft will assist you without a support contract, especially for third party applications, am i rite?

Beware the Crash
09-08-2007 10:24
I was experiencing similiar problems: MacBook Pro 17" with all the trimmings, ran everything but SL great, SL would inevitably (and seemingly randomly, as it might run for hours just fine or it might crash almost instantly, and everywhere in between) crash, locking my entire system. Now my MacBook is dead, almost certainly due to repeated hard reboots, and it's on its way back for repairs and I am calling it quits with SL for fear of killing my computer once more.
Also, it crashed in Parallels as well as under OSX. I didn't try under Boot Camp and, for obvious reasons, no longer am able to do so.

It's time to move on

I'm kinda with Kaija, These hard crashes is driving my new Mac Book Pro into the ground. This only happening with Second Life all other applications work great and have no problems. I really enjoy Second Life but this sh*t had gone on to long. It's time to stop and take a good hard look at SL. It's been suggested we buy a $130 Windows XP and run it in boot camp, but hell do you want to shell the extra $$ just to play a free game. Besides it's just basically a work around. It might be time to take a deep breath and cut the strings and find our addiction some place else. There are plenty of other MMORPGs, take a look around. At least until Second Life and Apple get there act together and fix this problem.
