I'm about to buy a 15 inch MacBook Pro and I wanted to know how well SL plays on it. Also is the current version of SL a universal binary?

Any other MacBook Pro owners out there who play SL?

SL on a MacBook Pro

Sandkat,
It runs well on my 17" MacBook Pro, and yes SL is Universal. Seriously consider adding additional RAM as SL can be a bit of a memory hog. This is especially true if you want to run other programs in the background along with SL.

Have fun and enjoy your new MacBook Pro!

Runs great on my macbook...2.33 core 2 duo with 2gb of ram. After disabling beamsync it vooms even faster =]] The speed and fps are right next to my x2 4200+ desktop with a 7900gs in it.

I have a 2.33 core 2 duo with 2gb of ram macbook pro and the two thing I don't like is

Fan noise (sound like a Jet engine about to take off when running SL)
Fly up and Fly down, to use page up page down you need to use 2 fingers
(func - page arrow up, func -page arrow down)

Other than that it's a good machine.

Works great on MacBook Pro

Usually works great for me. No jet engine fan noises. I am able to run other apps at the same time. Go for it!

Possibly? I remember when the original core duo MBs came out I heard of many fan problems....and I can't recall specifically, but I THINK it may have been the 17" core 2 duos having the same problem?

anyway, I have what is currently the 2nd tier MBP, 15", 2.33 c2d, 2gb ram, 256mb x1600. Factory refurbished, just got it last week. I've been monitoring the fans escelation in combination with the core temperatures closely...just how they ramp and when and such. I've come to the conclusion that they are IMPOSSIBLE to hear. Maybe with a stethascope? I watched them both climb to 2600+ rpms when when the core reached 70C, still...NO SOUND. The only things that make sound on my MBP are the dvd-rom and the speakers...thats it.

sl on two macbook pros!
03-06-2007 01:48
Hey there
I have a 2006 MacbookPro with 2gb ram, the 256 meg graphics card and a 2GHz Core Duo PLUS and 2007 MacbookPro with 2GB ram, the slower 128meg graphics card but a 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo. SL seems to run marginally better on the older machine (with the better graphics card) BUT it also runs hotter. This seems to be because the fans kick in at a lower temperature on the newer machine which means that it is noisier sooner. Having said that, the fans start eventually on the older machne too so the diff is small.

At home I rest the macbookpro on a cool block from the freezer! That keeps the fan noise down all right.

Actually my Macbook is relative new . I got it in Jan.
It is a 15" Screen
MacBook pro 2,2
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHZ
2GB Memory
BOOT RAM MBP22.00A5.B01

Christalys, it seems that we have more or less the same machine. And your fan is that quiet?
Shoould I take it back to apple for repair? The Fan noise on my machine is horrible.. it's really sound like a blow dryer. I think it's normal since my friend with the same machine has the same noise...

perhaps...you might check what firmware you have first though? For instance, this update says it address the fans and such http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/macbookpro15inchsmcfirmwareupdate.html

honestly though, the SMC firmwares confuse still, considering I just got mine last week...yet my firmware is 1.12f5. You would think that would have been updated in the factory, no?

Jack...strange thing happened last night to my macbook...I installed the latest airport extreme update in order to unlock N capable wireless on it, and after rebooting my fans went off the HOOK. I mean, not only were they audible, they were LOUD. 6000+ rpms...insane..

SO, I went and found this little applet -> http://www.alitacrew.org/icyclone/ which lets you either have manual fan control, or set it to automatic based on your desired temperature thresholds. It rocks.

Also to control fan speed try smcFancontrol.

I set it to spin up to 2k as a minimum, which helps keep temps down longer

I have a Macbook Pro2,2 refurbished, 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM.
I updated today to MacOS 10.4.9.
Firmware is 1.12.f5

Fans run at 6000 rpm, still, temperature is 61 degree Celcius (about 140 degree Fahrenheit).
They are easy to hear, running at that speed.

I am not satisfied with the noise, but SL runns quite fine.

Without SL running, Fans are at about 2000+ rpm, temperature is 52 °C.

No sound either (MacBook Pro 17";)

I have the same problem as the original poster... No sound at all... I think that it might have something to do with "Flip4Mac WMV"... but won't test, as this software is crucial for my rl-work.

Flip4Mac is a system-extension that take over replay of windows media in browsers...

Can anyone confirm that?.. or does anyone have other ideas about this sound-problem?

Specs:
MacBook Pro 17" - 1,2
Intel Core Duo 2.16 GHz
Processors: 1 Cores: 2
RAM: 2 GB
Bus: 667 MHz
Boot ROM: MBP12.0061.B03
SMC Version: 1.5f10
ATI Radeon X1600, 256Mb

I have Flip4Mac installed - no sound problems, save for the fan-noise.

Flip4Mac doesnt affect SL as it doesnt even use Windows Media formats.
Your sound problem is probably your audio playback is at the wrong frequency for SL. Its the most common cause of no sound in SL.
Run Audio Midi Setup (in Applications->Utilities), and make sure your audio *output* is on 44,100Hz for SL to work properly.
