I am about to purchase a new 17inch Duel core MacBook Pro. This is going to sound silly, but I use my current G4 MBpro for SL and it plays fine, but my ability to play SL on this new laptop is influencing my descision to purchase it right away or waiting.

I will have 2 gigs of memory and it will have the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics card with 256mb SDRAM. Does SL support this card? Any major bugs with this set up other than the normal Mac ones?

SL runs wonderfully on my 15" macbook pro.

The only advice I would give is to buy a real mouse to go with it. The trackpad fingery thing works quite well but can get a bit tedious after a while as SL seems quite keen on 2 button wheeled mouse.

SL Works great with all the graphic settings on full/highest.

I have the newest Core2Duo 17" (2.33Ghz).

Run SL windowed, running itunes,p2p stuff browsing...

No hickups at all i really love my first mac after years of pc.

works great! (also heard it works great on the iMac 24" c2d)

Works great for me

I'm currently using a 17" MacBook Pro 2.0 GHz Core Duo with the standard Radeon X1600 video card (256 MB VRAM) and it works well, it's very fast! The SL Mac software is another matter sometimes.... :(

I Just Bought A MacBook Pro

I love it so far. I am using a duo core AMD 5200+ in my other machine with 4 gigs of 667 hypermemory, So when I wanted a laptop i decided i wanted to have something fast. This was great choice. Even with the standard 2 gigs of ram it comes with it works as fast as my home pc. The only thing i find is my own errors ,in that I am new to Apple so I am learning the book as i go. It has been easy so far.
Hope this helps!

How's the heat issue on the new 17" Powerbooks?
01-04-2007 21:34
I have a 17" Powerbook G4, 1.3GHz, 2 Gigs of memory. Whenever I run SL the CPU useage goes up into the +90%. Within 2 minutes the CPU temp hits 130+ degrees which kicks the internal fan into high gear. Question does the New 17" Powerbooks have the same issue. When do you notice the fan coming on and how loud is it? I'm also serious thinking of replacing this old dependable workhorse for the new 17" Powerbooks.

Using iPulse CPU Performance Monitor to watch stats.

I use IPulse, also.
It looks like one processor is completely devoted to rendering...which makes sense.
SL prioritizes what to render. Then the Mac, subject to data availability, goes at the task of picture generation. There's LOTS to render...I suppose one test would be to just stand still and see if 'Bump mapping' and rippling water finally rezes on things that are 256m away! :)

Notice what happens if you Minimize SL..the CPU comes right back down.

OS X 10.5 is rumored to have more efficient implementation of Open GL.

There's no ATI control panel/preference pane for Intel yet so you can't get FSAA in SL without a hack:

It's well worth it.

MacBook Pro 15"

Ok, MBP 1.8Ghz here, and it plays NO problem on mine. When SL is behaving itself (not lagging) I get 15-20fps with my draw rate set to 125M.

Even as slow as about 5 FPS it is a lost smoother then my old PC at simlare frame rates.

CPU usage spikes to about 90% on one core, and temps rise to the 70c range, but I use SMCFANCONTROL and have my fan running about 3800 rpm.

MacBook Pro core 2 dup 17"

I have the newest Core2Duo 17" (2.33Ghz) and no problems running SL. Heat is not an issue. I think it gets warm, not hot. Fan is not on much of the time, but when on it purrs, not roars.

My G5 desktop also runs SL client. Using Apple 23" monitor, nice big pix. I like it.

Problem downloading Mac client
01-08-2007 11:13
Tried to download both old and Beta SL viewers to Mac desktop.

SecondLife_1_13_1_6.dmg
SecondLife_1_13_2_3_ADITI.dmg

The .dmg file looked right on the desktop, as if all were well, but wouldn't open.

Message: "Disk image failed to mount."

I didn't know what to do next.
