I've been wanting a way to see who on my friends list is online without going through the trouble of launching SL and connecting myself recently.

I noticed that the Community page has a frame embedded in it that shows who's online in your friends list, the url is http://secondlife.com/community/friends-iframe.php

Combine that with this handy little dashboard widget I've found : http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/networking_security/microbrowser.html

And I can tell who's online any time I activate my dashboard.

Now I'm thinking about learning how to make a Konfabulator or Dashboard widget of my own that does the same thing.

Dashboard shares the Webkit framework with Safari.

If it does not work, make sure to log in to the forums in Safari and try again.

Sweet! Been looking for something like that.

Next step: Anyone wanna do what it takes to make this into a dashboard buddy widget with some AIM-like features? i.e. noises when buddies sign on and off, "buddy pounce" (I would love that one), etc.

very cool.

i found the font size a bit small so i did some poking around it and if you go to the widget itself (Users/<username>/Library/Widgets/) and show package contents on it you can edit the MicroBrowser.css file to change the fonts and colors. to make the changes take effect just go into the dashboard and hover the cursor over the widget and hit command-R and it will refresh the Widget.

Now that would indeed be cool, I'd imagine it would be a lot easier if the data was available in a raw format instead of as a HTML table but I guess the contents of the table could be broken down into just a list of users.

I think Konfabulator would have to be used for those kind of features however since Dashboard widgets to my knowledge only run when they are visable on screen.

a konfab widget would be nice. it's mostly just xml and javascript.. maybe I'll do it if I actually am bored AND have enough time. :)

as mentioned before, it'd be neat to have IM interactions with this list.

it would also be super-awesome of LL to start packaging these sorts of things as xml web-services. and maybe finally give us a fully functional xml-rpc implementation.

I dont' have Tiger yet... any chance this could be done as a yahoo widget (then those poor PC users could try it too).

Most likely, although it won't be as simple as this because Yahoo Widgets doesn't have html rendering.

konfabulator and/or webpage
01-15-2006 12:08
Ya, I plan to do that one of these days. It's all AJAX so it could even be a web page after removing all the apple specific widget calls in the javascrtipt.

But i really don't care about PC users. lol.

And another widget...

Thought you might like to know that I made another widget not long ago. It's barely more than a configured Microbrowser, but there's a pretty logo and a splash screen that reminds you to log into the SL site. Which is worth it, right?

http://secondlife.funwithstuff.com/SL-Friends-Online-v2.1.zip

Version 2.1 *is* doing some (very) basic screen scraping (not just posting the web page) so when I have time I'll alphabetize the list (what's with the order now?) and maybe add some other stuff.

The problem with doing IM-style functionality is that the widget doesn't update all the time, only when you hit F12. But yes, it's doable. Note this this widget is *unlikely* to get as fancy as Preston's, and I haven't even seen it yet. Feedback here or on the other thread is welcome.
