I do storytelling in SL in West of Ireland which is a registered non-profit in SL where in world activities and events raise money for Project Children. Nuff about that! I relogged tonight before I was scheduled to do my 7PM SLT Story session and got screwed by the manditory upgrade.
Unfortunately, I am running MAC OS 10.3.9, which runs SL Viewer 1.19 fine. Before, I've just been able to run the older viewer. The graphics aren't as good, but that is no biggy. That's not what I am there for. I'm frustrated because this worthy endeavor and creative outlet which gives me such joy is now suddenly cut off. I'm frustrated because there is NO OTHER REASON for me to get a newer computer, or upgrade my OS even if I could afford to.
But what REALLY TORQUES ME is that the Support Portal is BEYOND useless. I get better answers asking people in world. And FORGET trying to lodge a complaint or get useful advice from Linden Labs from someone with a pulse. Was all over it thrre times tonight trying to figure out how to lodge a "ticket".
So, anybody have any affordable advice on how to get MAC OS 10.4.11, or 10.5.0? 'Cause lord knows I'm not getting any help from the Lindens!

Sorry I cant help you but I hear SOO many ppl who complain about the compatabilty of MACs and SL...maybe its just me...erm... have you tried technical support on SL website? We could do with Live Tech Support I am sure it would silence a lot of angry blog comments about crashes and increase the retainer of customers too... Sorry I wasnt much help but check out SL support portal.

Thanks for the Good thought!

Appreciate the good thoughts. Thank You. The Support Portal is useless and ineffective as a technical support tool. I can't find my way around it nor can I figure out how to use it. I am not completely techinically unsavvy, but it does not come as easily to me as it does to others. In my experience, good technical support anticipates a cross section of skill levels. The SL support system does not and I would never, EVER, use the term "User Friendly" where it is concerned.

I am having the same issue with SL now. I was running 1.19.4 fine, but now says that I NEED to upgrade it. When I do so it won't open.
If someone has a resolution for this issue I would love to hear it.
I don't see why if you have a Mac OX 10.3 you can't just use the older version of the client. I understand that upgrading the program makes for a better experience... but not everyone can afford to buy a new computer to run SL.

If a Mac can handle SL, it should be able to handle Tiger fine also, no new computer needed. The upgrade is USD 120 or so, but you might find better out there, try Google, eBay etc.
Don't worry about it being 10.4.11, any 10.4 retail set should do, software update will make up the difference.
If you decide to shop eBay, make sure you're getting the retail Tiger box. The OS X discs that ship with the computer are usually tied to that specific model and won't install on any old Mac.

From: Tinkerz13 Waco I don't see why if you have a Mac OX 10.3 you can't just use the older version of the client. Apparently there was a pretty bad security hole in it. Some of the unofficial third party viewers may still work. Try them. The thread here: /164/6e/282576/1.html mentions a Mac port of the Cool Viewer people seem to like. I don't know if it works under 10.3, but it's worth a shot. Don't listen to streaming media with an older viewer if you get it to run.

10.3.9 security hole
10-07-2008 09:42
I have been running 10.3.9 for years and had no issue with security. Besides, if I want to risk that it should be my choice. The real issue here is why does LL insist on evicting everyone running this OS when there is really no technical reason you cant use an older viewer. Yet another example of the pervasive lack of LL customer support. As a company they really excel at ticking off their customers.

Cool Viewer does not work.... tried it this morning after not being able to log in. I have tried OnRez since this original issue of not logging in. It seems to be running fine, had to tweak the heck outta it so it would actually run without the beach ball freeze. But so far so good. http://viewer.onrez.com/

Installed Office 2008 or iTunes 8 yet? How's the iPod Touch treating you? Apple no longer supports OS X 10.3, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that LL isn't. They announced this back in July: http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/07/17/its-official-we-will-not-be-supporting-os-103-“panther”-after-today/I feel your guy's pain, but it doesn't really make much sense for LL to continue to update a viewer almost no one used, for an OS that Apple doesn't even support anymore.

10.3
10-07-2008 12:34
Milla. I understand your point logically, but look at it from my perspective. 10.3 wasn't broken. I have never had trouble with it - EVER. Neither was 1.19. "If it ain't broke....!" And I have to concur that making a choice that eliminates customers is a poor one. Particularly if no alternatives are possible that don't involve client investment.
And let me make myself clear, I understand the need to upgrade technical systems, what TORQUES me is the ineffectiveness of the SL Support system to give me any real answers much less options. I also an frustrated that I can't express my frustration except to write them a letter and put a stamp on it. Now that sounds mighty technically advanced , doesn't it!

Cale, try the onrez viewer, it may work There are other alternative viewers, anyone know which are Mac friendly?
