We have to assume that kids are getting on SL as "Adults"
Personally I think having a completely separate "Teen Grid" is wrong since kids interact with Adults and places built by adults all the time in RL.
I've also looked in to using the "No payment info" to weed out kids, however I believe there are kids with payment info and there are adults that don't have payment info.
I am starting to think that a "Leisure suit larry" test approach would work.
The system would have the person wear an invisible hud mounted item that would store the "Adult" results.
A "Test" script would then ask the person to answer questions based on popular culture at the time they were growing up. The results would then be used to determine how "Adult" you are.
Of course this would have to be a closed system, but it could use link messages to allow the locked part work with items owned by the land owner to ban-on-demand those not "Adult" enough for that site.

That’s not a bad idea at all...what do you mean by closed system? In addition to what your saying I would also make all questions change so it could not be memorized

From: Moonshine Herbst It will not. We have Google now. You nailed one of the two issues - answers can be looked up in Google. The other issue is that attempting to find a common set of trivia questions which all adults, but no children, would know the answer to is, IMHO, impossible.

Popular? culture

Is this 'popular culture' going to be applicable to all persons, no matter where they grew up, whether that's the USA, the UK, other European countries, Asia, Africa, Pac-Rim, etc, etc. Paul.

As stated before, this generation of teens is quite proficient with google.
I'm sorry, but this system is full of little problems, not to mention that it would be difficult to impliment on a large scale.

What do I know about the popular culture that 18-year-olds grew up with?
I'm going to put an automated ban system on my land that triggers if you can't answer questions about Bagpuss.

Knowing the sorts of things that Ordinal finds humorous, more than likely she won't be content with just banning you...fully expect the wrong answer to trigger something rather extreme, yet nonetheless amusing such as being blown up, stripped naked, painted purple, orbited to an incredible height and dropped into a crowded club, more than likely with your regular prim attachments replaced by something of laughable dimensions and appearance. And then, and only then, you will be banned. *toodles off to google "Bagpuss" in the interests of self-preservation*

I think that makes my original point quite well, Tsu Bagpuss was a British TV series made in 1974. There has been a revival amongst the UK student population in recent years. The point is that Bagpuss is part of 'popular culture' in the UK, but does not readily hold any meaning for anyone else raised in a different region of the planet. You probably have no idea what Pogle's Wood or the Woodentops are about either, I would suspect - and nor should you, they are even older UK TV programmes. A test requiring answers to questions on 'popular culture' would need to take this sort of thing into account. One person's 'popular culture' is another person's parochial trivia. Paul.

and for the nosy, I am only a few years from 40, or is that 4. I am getting dejected by the amount of candles on cakes I cannot eat. Perhaps they are better if they are set on fire anyway.

I think this approach could'nt be more wrong. For starters, how does recalling the past determine how adult you are? And another thing is, people come from other cultures and other societies. Most of them have better things to do than pay attention to an American society.

Ok. let me clarify
08-02-2006 19:31
I won't go into all of the details here, but I am trying to see how it would play socially.
Some details.
First by "Closed source" I mean that the attachment is "-mod" so you can't read the encryption keys and channel numbers. It would also clear all certificates if it changed owners.
Second it would hold multiple certificates and anyones object can add an certificate to it, but others can query and chose who's to accept.
The HUD item would hold multiple certificates and each would store who they came from.
So some certificate's could be made by one person based on who they can vouch for as an adult in RL.
Others could come from a simple "Are you over 18?" test.
The Test option would be a little better than the "Are you over 18?" that most web sites use. It would also be a timed response to reduce how fast you can goggle something.
For example. (multiple choice) Q. Pick a country. A. USA Q. What recent president started reducing taxes on the wealthy and what was it called. A. "Reagan Reaganomics"
What I am proposing is a system that can be added to since I would not want to have everyone wear 100 items.
There would be two "-mod" scripts in the certificate system. One holds the certificates and is expected to be worn in something. The other responds to link messages so that other scripts can check the person without knowing the encription keys.
This second script could then be intregrated into test stations, transporters and security devices.
Each certificate would store. 1. The owner name and owner key and key of the object that added it. 2. The name given for the certificate. Example "18+ question" 3. The result as a number. 0 = fail. -1 = pass, else percent
Any other script could then get the certificate data either by asking low security questions like "GetByName|18+ question" or it could get all of them and decide which to use based on who added them.
It would be hard to use this to ban people since anyone could delete it and get a new one for free. But it could be used to allow people without having to ask them each time they came to the place.
Note: I use "People" in the general sense to represent any kind of person or animal or robot, ect...

yeah, a nice concept but it won't work. even before the teen grid kids got in and even with the teen grid active I still see 15 year olds in the game. there's no effective way to screen, not via intelligence or spelling proficiency or whatever. I can say resolutely that some of the twelve year olds I knew before the teen grid came on had a better grasp on the english language than their thirty+ counterparts. it's the same trouble that myspace is going through. those determined enough to get where they don't belong will find a way. accept that fact and move on... ultimately I think it's more the responsibility of the parent to ensure the kids aren't exploring Anal Sex Pose-ball Incorporated than LL's job to ensure they can't get there in the first place. but that's just me. I'm all about personal responsibility.

Freedom of Speech...even for the little ones

One of the beautiful things about second life is that I can go anywhere, talk about anything, even participate in anything if I so choose. It should be up to the parent or caregiver to judge whether something is fit for a child or not. Who are we to say no? If there is a highly educated and well rounded 16 year old, who has experienced both sex and violence in his or her life, should this said person be banned from viewing things they have already seen? Perhaps I am digressing into child rearing. For the purposes of second life, there seems to be no real way to judge if people are over 18. If we ask certain questions to allow entry, what happens to those over 18 who do not know the answer to such questions, whether because of actual lack of knowledge, different cultural upbringing, or they just didn't know how to use google or wikipedia. If people create things that only adults should see, perhaps the greater question is why do we hide this from our kids? If a parent deems it necessary to keep their child in an under 18 second life, who are we to overrule them? The most parents can do (other than constant surveillance) is to introduce children to judge things for themselves. If they are underage but still want to participate, perhaps they should do it with adult supervision (Preferably in real life, but perhaps a new job could open up in second life...mentors/guides?).

From: Joshua Nightshade ultimately I think it's more the responsibility of the parent to ensure the kids aren't exploring Anal Sex Pose-ball Incorporated than LL's job to ensure they can't get there in the first place. but that's just me. I'm all about personal responsibility. Parents can hardly be expected to have an eye on their 15 or 16 year old kid all day, and teenagers owning a computer with internet access is one of the realities of life these days. But there's one thing a parent can do: they can refuse to grant their child access to a credit card. If they do so and a 16 year old signs up on adult websites, the content provider can hardly be held responsible, because he did everything he possibly could do to ensure only mature cc owners got access. One should expect from LL to do the same. Every adult person can easily get a credit card these days. Well, everyone who has the money to play online games at least - which game publisher could possibly want other customers? (Of course, a publisher could grant access to everyone for free, but let's just assume that every game service provider has the ultimate goal to get paid by their customers and not by some probable sponsors or investors). And yes, I know that credit cards aren't very popular in some european countries, since I'm living in one myself, but I also know it's no problem at all to get one. The need for a credit card exists since the glory days of Ultima Online. There are reasonable steps to ensure that no (obvious) minors get access, so why not use them? Instead the kids are welcomed with open arms (i.e. an open registration process), and now adult content gets removed step by step, starting with "offensive" group names. Btw... even MMORPGs without an age limitation ask for a payment information when one signs up for a free test month. For a good reason, since customers who can't pay only add to the server load.

I'm 18 and I probably couldn't answer them to be honest. I don't see why you're all freaking out about this. They subject themselves to the adult material. LL has the area where you put your birthdate. If they lie, they cannot sue you nor LL, and they know what they will be getting into.
