From: someone When Proky uses "hon" it means he's pissed. Good work! Hi, hon! No, it doesn't mean I'm pissed or sexist. 99 percent of the people in this game use the phrase "hon" with utter innocent unawareness of it being either a vehicle for sexism or for expressing hostility. I use it to convey sarcasm knowing that it is used by 99 percent of the people in this game with utter innocent, etc. Guess what! TWO of your houses are rented. Let's see....hmm....Well, ok, I couldn't move Californication. I try. What I'm doing now is putting it in that LL campaign you have to pay $50 to be in! Maybe someone will rent it then? I'm *that* much of a masochist, Ingrid

From: Prokofy Neva Oh, could you provide that address for those on the forums who have time to go to IRC? I don't. hahaha!. You kill me Prok. You don't have time because you're too busy writing a dozen 2000 word diatribes per day. You obviously have more free time than anyone here, by a longshot.

Ok, let's get back on topic. Prok has invited Aimee and the rest of her friendz to hector and pillory him. My material is much better in front of a live audience. I support this feature and/or suggestion.

No, it doesn't mean I'm pissed or sexist. 99 percent of the people in this game use the phrase "hon" with utter innocent unawareness of it being either a vehicle for sexism or for expressing hostility. Most people would agree that "hon" is a term of endearment when used to address one's mate, and a put-down when used to address a debating adversary.

Well hopefully that stuff is over. Would anybody like to share their feelings on my original post? Or should I shut up? (It's a valid suggestion) From: Aimee Weber I would also like to suggest the possibility (I could be wrong) that some voices are not heard when a thread devolves. A kind of de facto censorship occurs when people feel that the thread or even the entire forum is an ineffective place to exchange ideas. Posts that WOULD/COULD have been made in an on-topic, polite debate may actually never see the light of day in an ongoing forum slugfest.
I am not sure there EXISTS a solution. I just think it would be nice if there were a place in the forums for each kind of exchange so that nobody's voice gets lost.

(It's a valid suggestion) Mods call it "signal to noise ratio". The more you try to surpress the noise, the greater the chance of accidentally losing important parts of the signal. Sometimes your most problematic posters give you some of the best feedback, once you sift it out of the napalm. But it's the mod's call as to when the damage to constructive discourse is greater than the value of an individual's input. It's not an easy call to make.

It's interesting that you think it can only be used as a sexist address or as an insulting appellation... some people actually use the word as a term of endearment.

I didn't want to produce them, but I hadn't any real choice in the matter. Just idle armchair speculation...

There is some productive conversation in this thread, but I wanted to remind everyone that the SL Forums are not the proper place to air personal grievances against one another - please refrain from personally attacking someone you don't agree with in the forums or I will need to close this thread

Aimee,
You didn't understand my post. I know you don't work for the Herald, that's clear. But I am a freelancer for the Herald and have been doing an occasional column for them called "Conversations From the Core" -- interviews with FIC like yourself. Go look it up.
So I asked if you would let ME interview YOU not have THEM interview ME or YOU interview ME.
And I offered, to make it more palatable, to have you and your gang do the usual thing of asshats and dressups and stuff -- I didn't insinuate that you DO stuff like arrive on people's lawn and throw crap around I said you were WELCOME to because that felt like the kind of thing you'd do, given the way all kinds of pictures and irrelevant crap, like mean caricatures of people, is flung around here on the forums. But leave it at home, too, if you want.
And I was also suggesting that yes, you did organize the shunning. You began by making proposals to completely reorganize the forums, all around me, to get rid of me (that was your main objective).
That sort of thing boggles the mind for me...if you didn't get on IRC to organize the shun, well...you facilitated it. But let's discuss in the interview.
Ulrika, I have several jobs. I keep pretty busy. I take the time to post too, it feels important to me now. I'm sure that won't last forever. Whatever my "bum" quality, all of you, posting two seconds after me, are then also suspect as to your *cough* occupational status.

Ok Prok. We can take them one at a time. From: Prokofy Neva Oh, but you already FOUND a solution, hon! It's going on IRC to that efnet.net address and going on the #secondlife channel and spending 40 percent of your time talking about me, and using that time handily to organize a big collective shun of me. Nice work!
Back this up or apologize.

I was just thinking about this early this morning. I wanted to make a post about it but couldn't quite express it. The danger of eliminating folks like Prokofy from the forums is, that it might take out folks like me as well. Separating a radical leftist with logical but unpopular messages from a sadomasochistic forum troll with paranoid delusions is a difficult task, especially when you consider that sometimes I sound crazy and sometimes Prokofy sounds sane. So, it's not really a matter of free speech rather it's a matter of not having a mechanism for reliably determining which radical voice actually has merit. Yet, have we all not made that distinction? It takes some time but it seems like most community ne'er do-wells are all eventually branded and then tortured until they leave. (The police found Korg Stygian hanging by his belt from a shower-curtain in a Motel 6.) ~Ulrika~

I agree with that Arcadia and Ulrika. Rather than CHANGING the forums, how do you feel about the ADDITION of a forum under a different set of rules? Rules that may recapture that portion of the SL population that refuses to participate in the current system because of the tone? Would it make a difference if this alternative forum was located on a different server than SL's? (privately, but well run?). The objective being...everything you know and love about the forums as they are right now remains the same...but a place for the "missing voices" could be created as well that wouldn't interfere with this forum.
Just fishing for ideas. Please shoot them down at will.

Oh, one more thing...been meaning to ask you, Aimee.
Would you like to give me an interview for the Second Life Herald?
Hi Prok. I get that you're addressing your critics in general, but I've never seen Aimee on #secondlife in all the time that I've been there organizing your shunment For anyone that's interested: Adam Zaius' post on getting into the unofficial SL IRC channel is here. Prok, I'm not suggesting that you were suggesting that Aimee is a Herald employee, but just to clarify for the general public: Aimee Weber is not a Herald employee but a freelance wit what wrote a freelance article for the Herald. Much like Prok [ 1 & 2] There are unconfirmed reports that Aimee said that she would write another piece when, in her words, "the frozen pigs in hell fly out my butt". So, we look forward to that one -- Neal Stewart, Second Life Herald

Whee! I just spent 45 minutes on the unofficial SL IRC channel. I tried to start talking smack about Prokofy but was warned that the channel ops frown on that topic. Specifically, I was told that the IRC channel is a place to get away from attention-seeking personalities and all topics related. I asked if I could invite Prokofy to the channel for some live debate and was almost kicked from the server on the spot. So, there's nothing to worry about Prokofy. There are no secret discussions of you going on there. Enjoyably, it was quite the opposite. ~Ulrika~
