Why is it being kept open? Prior historical precedent, e.g. Lordfly Digeridoo's thread. Right now Jeska is away but I will be asking Robin and her for further info about future policy. Besides this, however, the thread FlipperPA Peregrine started is evolving into some really good discussion, and this one itself has taken on quite a life... I want to know more. _____________________

I was just alerted to this thread by both Angelina and Mikau. Since SOME people don't know how to distinguish a SL profile from a RL profile, let me CLEAR some things up. When I sign online, I'm generally at school. Not at home. My bills are already around a month and a half behind... so don't think that I've been sitting here going "OMG INTERNET IS SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT *GASP*" because I've not been. Wow, that's definitely the tone you want to take when addressing your would-be benefactors. _____________________

That could help, yes, but I'd need to find out where I should get started, and on what fundraiser I should do. Any ideas? You might approach of few of the many club owners and see if they can do an event/fundraiser, or if you have any building talents, or know a builder, you can perhaps make a small token item for sale as a fundraiser, with a description that all proceeds will help your friend in her time of need. People really can be generous in SL, as I've witnessed time and time again. However, knowing the why, what and for whom and having it set up in a good manner in-world would be better than just a plea on the forums most likely. _____________________

Wow, that's definitely the tone you want to take when addressing your would-be benefactors. If you have a few moments could you review your response to the other request for a benefactor and think on whether you were equally judgemental on that occasion? Please consider that this person was brought into this thread by friends and she has addressed the details of her situation although I'm sure she is equally as embarassed and as uncomfortable as the other poster was to discuss his personal details. Furthermore, I think it's fair to say that she and her friends are likely to have considerably less familiarity with the statement about solicitations in the forum TOS than the earlier poster. If there needs to be different responses to the two situations, consider if the harsher judgement should go to what seems to be an impulsive act on her behalf by her friends versus the well thought out plan of someone who had too much pride for the low interest funds available for his situation (the link in that thread suggested that his plan had been hatched months ahead of time). Just saying. _____________________

Rayani,
I'm unclear on whether you're in the U.S. or not, but if you are: - you CAN get child support from the father beginning in the second trimester in most states. Call your District Attorney's office for info on how to get started on this. - save every single receipt for every single expenditure related to your pregnancy and to the baby. It's sometimes better (faster, cheaper) to take the father to small claims court to get a judgement. If he's working, it's easy to get his wages garnished. Call your local Legal Services department for free attorney services. Sometimes just a letter from an attorney or a mediation session is all it takes, and can avoid court altogether. - you mentioned, the state, but not your local county. they have funds for emergencies like yours, not only for your rent, but for utilities too. Call Social Services in your local town. - your county Social Services can also direct you to your local bank, and obtain such things as maternity clothes, household items, and baby items and clothing for you. Taking advantage of these services, which are there for people in your situation, will mean less money you need to put out for those things, and more you can put toward rent and utilities. - you're also eligible for the WIC program, which provides pregnant women and children with coupons or cards to get free food at the grocery store such as eggs, milk, cheese, juice, cereal. Apply for that to keep yourself and your baby healthy. Getting good healthy food will also help you to deal with the stress you're under. - Best wishes for things to work out for you very soon. I hope some of this information will bring you some relief. |

If you have a few moments could you review your response to the other request for a benefactor and think on whether you were equally judgemental on that occasion? I made my distaste for the practice known then, too, though it was tempered by the obvious display of humility there. Please consider that this person was brought into this thread by friends and she has addressed the details of her situation although I'm sure she is equally as embarassed and as uncomfortable as the other poster was to discuss his personal details. That sucks -- she should have a better handle on her friends and her friends should have a better handle on what she is comfortable with doing in regards to this situation. Regardless of all that, she was presented as a charity case. The moment that happens, humility is of the utmost importance -- even if you're not comfortable with the situation. The responses to this thread, even the objections, were perfectly reasonable. Even if that humility means saying "Hey, my friends are really sweet, and thank you all for your concern, but I'm going to handle this on my own. Thanks again," that's the way it should happen. Coming in and berating people, when in that position, just isn't classy, no matter how this is sliced. This is about humility. I'm not going to publicly judge someone else's motivations when they're obviously cornered. I'm more than happy to judge conduct, however, and the conduct in question was just embarassing. Just saying. Neat. _____________________

Stunned and amazed

I sit here just stunned. Absolutely fricken amazed at this trend of posting for money. I've looked thru this thread and Lordfly's...and I've heard many in SL talk about how money is tight and they can't make ends meet...YET THEY STILL HAVE TIME TO PLAY IN THEIR SECOND LIFE. WTF???
Get back in the game of Real Life and make things happen for yourself. Do what you gotta do, get help in your real life, it's out there! Just have to log out long enough to find it. -Raynia, I understand you are not asking for anything and that you are logged off most of the time, "due to health issues", why not be logged off "taking care of business"? Unbelievable. -before the flaming of me begins, let me just say that I have bundles of compassion for those who take responsibility for themselves and are disciplined enough to do what they have to do. |

By the way, something has been lost here, that is, something I forgot to say, which is, congratulations on your new baby coming!
The advice about WIC and everything is good, too. And guess what - you get a wonderful baby out of all this! coco _____________________

I checked with Robin. Threads asking for donations are indeed soliciting as per our Guidelines and aren't appropriate on the SL Forums.
This thread will now be closed. There's been a lot of good discussion here, tho--feel free to start up a new thread talking more about mercy, goodwill, and charitable acts unto others, and moral+ethical dilemmas too. _____________________
