They take the list of those who receive a lot of dwell, as they can pull it up, the top 100 or whatever, then draw 2 percent of that. Makes sense to me. Otherwise they'd pay out a lot more.

The top 2% of 100 would be 2 people 2% of 1000 is 20, 2% of 10,000 is 200. Even if your dwell is 0, that is dwell since 0 is a number. considering there are thousands of land plots, but over 70 people get Developer bonus, it lends to the fact they are using a much larger number like 2% of everything. That is simple basic logic a 3rd grader could work out.

And most people in SL are on 9.95 accounts and barely log in world on a regular basis, much like other games. Only about 10% of the population are dedicated players.

When people tell you that you don't need land to have fun in this game, you should ask yourself why they are intruding on your game with their monkish asceticism, what their agenda is, and how they came to that odd view.

And when anybody tells me I NEED something, when they don't even know me, I have to ask why they are intruding on my game with their bossy attitude, what their agenda is, and how they came to that odd view.

For the record, I own land. I have no problem with you having the opinion that owning land can greatly increase your enjoyment in SL. I know it has for me. What I object to is your know-it-all attitude saying that everyone needs to do anything in particular. I know a lot of people that are perfectly happy without land. You aren't the barometer of the common man, Prok. You aren't in charge, and you don't get to tell us what to do. If only you had phrased your diatribe as "Here's 10 reasons owning land can be fun" there woundn't be a problem. But no, you have to boldly state that you are the arbiter of what everyone in the whole damn game needs... and that's just a crock. Who are you to tell the basic account holders that can't afford a monthly subscription that they are incapable of having fun? That's elitist and offensive to me.

The very fact that there are indeed oodles of people having oodles of fun in SL without owning any land makes your opening statement false... or are you saying that they aren't actually having fun? Just what is your point in taking such a contrarian view? Its getting to the point where I suspect that if anyone you consider FIC says the sky is blue you'd post a long rant about how it's really brown, and the whole "blue" thing is a conspiracy to trick newbies.

Ah the thing I love about the forums is that people just don't know how to disagree with any civility. Sometimes it is enough to simply disagree without assaulting the other persons motives or intentions. I disagree with prokofy's assertion that you need to have land to have fun in second life. However, to be honest I do need to have land to have fun in SL.

What I see happening her ein the forums is the chicken and egg dance of who attacks who first. Prok says something, people attack him, he attacks back and the whole thing spirals out of control. I did not read Proks original post as telling anyone what to do, I read it as an assertion tha tthe game requires ownership of land to maximize is entertainment value. Right or wrong I don't think anyone was telling anyone what to do.

The original post was structured as persuasive propaganda to a comical degree, not an expression of personal views. To really respond in kind you would have to propagandize an opposing view or detourne the presentation (as in the "You DO need to have fun in SL" thread).

Shouting at Prok that "Your propaganda was trying to convince me of something!" is like arguing with commercials for a brand you don't like.

Also, the Contrary Pedagogue's posts are likely produced by some cabal of Feted Oldbie Pranksters just to rile you up.

You must have land to enjoy SL. And you must rent it from a reseller, or you really won't enjoy SL. Trust me! :D

Yes, the regime demands it! Buy land now (or rent it, *nudge, nudge, wink*), you will get an icebox and a hoe. Toilet paper and bread lines are not "that" long... Failure to comply will result in re-education by means of Soviet references.

An icebox? The perfect place to keep my hoe!

Why wasn't this one of the numbered arguments?

I'm a basic member and I don't own land, and I have fun in Second Life.

But I do RENT land, and it often isn't very much fun coming up with the money to pay that rent, though it is a nice point of pride that I manage to do it. And I wouldn't have nearly as much fun if I didn't "have" that land, especially when others have land and homes, and I do love my home.

In the best of all worlds, I'd have a whole ISLAND of my own to build on whatever I like, with oodles of prims.

But anyway, my ears always perk up when I hear about the benefits of moving up to a Premium membership and owning land. For instance, I could still live where I do - and have a much less difficult time paying the $780 monthly rent, or thereabouts - and also have 512 somewhere to set up a store!!

So, you know, I haven't ruled it out!

Thank you, Prok, for giving me even more to think about.

I have always suspected that 12% of players own land stat, even though it definitely made me feel like less of an outsider to read it.

But I think it may contain:

1. People with lifetime land they pay no tier on (people who were on the game early enough to get this advantage)

2. Oodles of basic members who never logged on again, or rarely, or maybe just play it when their other three games are down (I mean, it's not like it's COSTING them anything). I mean, look at that site where you can see everyone who has signed onto the forums that somebody posted in another thread, in General. I did, and it was THOUSANDS of names, most of them having 0 under post number.

Now of course, whole bunches will sign up for here, to be able to tell what is going on, but don't really do it to post. But still, I get the idea that whole bunches of people "in" the forums really aren't anymore, and, likewise, there are a lot "in" the game who really aren't anymore. Not sure how big an effect this would be, since I don't know how long they have offered basic memberships.

3. The large number of renters (like me) isn't figured into this, either, yet we also occupy land. It's just that the landlord is the only one listed as landowner.

There may be some other factors I haven't considered, but I think that 12% is misleading, and have always been certain that it is, regardless of how comforting it may have always been to me, as a basic player.

If I were to venture a guess - yup, I'm stupid enough to do that! - I would say at least 50% of regular players (by which I mean ones who long in often) own land in the game. And probably 85% have some place, somehow, where they hang their hat.

I just don't run into that many nomads. But of course, I could be all wrong.
