"The Irrlicht Engine is an open source high performance realtime 3D engine written and usable in C++ and also available for .NET languages. It is completely cross-platform, using D3D, OpenGL and its own software renderer, and has all of the state-of-the-art features which can be found in commercial 3d engines.
We've got a huge active community, and there are lots of projects in development that use the engine. You can find enhancements for Irrlicht all over the web, like alternative terrain renderers, portal renderers, exporters, world layers, tutorials, editors, language bindings for java, perl, ruby, basic, python, lua, and so on. And best of all: It's completely free."

According to the specs, you can render a complete Quake 3 level with only 6 calls to the Engine and 10 lines of code.
And it's fast, even when rendering 10,000 polygons (techdemo) or more (my current spot in SL has a little over 5000 visible polygons).
It has a ton of features including fast collision detection.

You should read "The Mythical Man Month".

It's pretty accurate in my experience.

I prefer Wirth's law myself, it aptly describes SL. >]

Adding more programmers to a problem never solves it. I've had first hand experience in that myself. Ask a team of 5 programmers how they'd tackle sending a poker data across a network and you'll get 10 different answers. o.O;
No, it's best to keep a group of programmers small and command them with a single person who knows how to take advice. But you need enough people that if a problem arises someone in the group will know how to solve it. It's a delicate balancing act between command presence of a group leader and skill diversity.

I took a look at both Brooks law and Wirths law and they are very interesting.
Thanks for the education, I will keep those both in mind in the future!

All I have to say in responce is that I must chance my idea.
Instead of using the increased revenue for hiring more employees, according to Brooks law they should use the money to hire some of the best programers in the world with very high above industry salaries! According to the Brooks theory this may increase general programmer productivity by 500 percent.

So if you can pay 200 percent of average salary and you get 500 percent increase in productivity then it was certainly worth it for both Linden Labs and us the users.

And will hopfully lead to a brake through in getting us Havok 4 by this Christmas.

You're welcome. I was pointed to it when I mentioned that I wanted to learn how to use graphics in my c++ programs.
Not that I've tried. (Prior to the link) I've come to the conclusion that the kinds of game *I* want to make are roguelikes (not that I've tried here either! I've also found I dislikee coding anything over 1000 lines or so ;)). Screw graphics, I want game play! That's also my want out of games I play. (SL may be a glorified MU*, but I enjoy it.)

So, in theory, LL could pay 1000% and get 1 programmer working at 2500%? They can then have just one coder and we'll have Havok 4 by next week if we through enough money at it!
