AOL do this already (and have for years): you can choose to set an auto-reply to IMs to tell unsolicited people that you are busy or whatever. In the SL UI I'd suggest a wee tick on the IM page of someone you WANT to talk to that says "Other IMs get auto answer", and a pop-up that sets that message. I expect some small extension to the group message system would get close to the same capability too...

I think what Gummi wants is the option to that *some* people get the busy message and others don't.

I would much prefer having the 'busy' message displayed to everyone BEFORE they start typing an IM message...

the "busy" message comes at a price though. No one can send you inventory while in "busy" mode.. so if you're waiting for a package...
