....I do think some kind of reputation system is important, especially as SL grows...

That sorts gets back to my last message, the 'con' idea. As perhaps an alternate to the previous idea, a system where people give out more negs, their name gradually becomes more tinted towards red, whereas the friendly people get more green... so you don't have to look into someone's profile to see how big of a troublemaker they are --- it's right there for the world to see. But most of all I agree that ratings needs to go and something better needs to take its place. I like the idea of a mini-guestbook thing instead, where you don't just click boxes. But you instead leave a line of feedback. Who will take seriously anyone that types "lol he is ghey"? Of course, there's always the /creative/ griefers that will lie on someone else's entry, but, well, that's a bit easier to nail justicewise than just someone that triple negged and never needed to state a reason, truthful or not.

Just a thought

Well I was given a neg rating! Ok i feel like I belong now LOL!!

What if the only people allowed in the welcome are only the greeters and mentors and those that have gone thru an application process? I know I know not the best of ideas but the WAs are becoming so crowded and lagged. Then set up an area just for solicitors and those who just want to hang out?
All the soliciting and grieving is overwhelming to a new SL players as well as to those who are there as mentors and greeters.

If the WA were mine to redesign, I would….

Add more places to sit in the pavilions, especially a few with pose balls/cubes. The best places to hang out right now (for non griefers) are the centers of the Games and Information pavilions, where you are out of chat range from the mob in center and can have actual conversations with new residents.

Keep the games pavilion intact (with added seating).

Information Pavilion: put in kiosk for “need a tour guide?” which links back to the greeter program so that those who decided to bypass a greeter at first can still participate. Put in a kiosk for “need a mentor?” which brings up all mentors who are “on call” and willing to help.

Turn the Sponsored pavilion into “Explore Second Life”
Put Pathfinder’s Picks in there and the Discovery Hunt. Allow for 6 weeks of archiving Pathfinders Picks so that those who find it a great tool can go back to previous picks. Put a kiosk in for the SL Parks and Rec Service. Put a kiosk in for theme/activity parks, special attractions, games (Darklife, etc.) Put in a kiosk for places with large collections of “freebies”.

Add a landing pad for people who want to give balloon or air tours of SL.

I love Psyra and Isablan's suggestions. They'd be great if they could be worked in! Sorry for everyone else who has continued to feel the effects of these emotionally pathetic morons.

I haven't seen them lately, however... maybe they FINALLY got banned for the repeated ToS violations. Could happen to a nicer group of gobshites!

Here's the link where you can vote for this:

I'm with Alexa on this one. There needs to be a liason there 24/7, and it should be a strictly enforced no grief zone. I wouldn't mind seeing harsher penalties for TOS violations in the WA.

I still don't like your blanket assumption that people who give out neg ratings based on their own opinions should be banned from the welcome area.

I prefer Calla's idea of only SL Mentors/Greeters in the WA if anything is to be done.

Hmm, how about this: No one can rate or be rated by anyone less than a month old. That would stop a lot of problems. How can someone really judge anything in SL without actually being here for a length of time.

Rating, scripts and whatever else is the grief de jour is turned off in the WA.

Restrict access to the WA to Greeters/ Mentors as Calla suggested (and the recently arrived) all others will be TP'ed to the perimiter after a certain time period.

Those interested in hanging around the WA should post a bond or be subject to fines. Nothing stops fukuppery faster than losing real cash. Doesn't matter what alt you use, the credit card is the common denominator.

I was going to reply with somthing simular to this and Kat spelled it out:
-Noobies dont rate or get rated
-Restriced access to WA
-Problem solved

If I took a bunch of neg rates during the trial period I would have quit. I'm wondering how much monies this behavior has cost the Lindens so far.

we need to fill the WA with just greeters, live help, and mentors. :)

I went to the WA yesterday for the first time in months.

I was deeply disappointed to see a whole crew of neg raters, and was actually surprised I didn't get neg rated myself. After all I was begging Jack Linden to marry me and was whining because the no script thingy wouldn't let me hug him -.-

I think its such a negative experience for newcomers. I got neg rated on my first day, and the same guy happened to be there last night, after much questioning as to why you would neg rate someone less than 20 mins old (after having it explained to me) he *did* retract my neg the next day when he reappeared.

I Think a welcome area "ONLY" for mentors and greeter is something i thought about after the current state of the Welcome area. Newbies needs to be in a "FRIENDLY" not a war zone area. These days I am all over SL doing the mentor/greeter thing. We really need a location were newbies and mentor/greeters can mingle. and then release them them in the world. With school being out there is alot more hate rating going on besides dramas being played on people just for kicks as you say. We really need to protet the newbies until the they earn their wings. Dont you think.

Excellent Idea!!

Not sure if that would work. more like... just dont allow negative ratings in the Welcome Area all together. It kind of takes from the main purpose of that place. I rarely venture to the Welcome Area anymore. I used to go and try to help new people out and listen to the chat. The last time I went there I was neg rated.... my first and my only neg rating by someone who was doing it just for fun. However the Lindens decide to handle it... something needs to be done, because you can be sure I wont go back there until something changes.

you lost the point of this issue. The WA is a place for gather and to form friendships. BUT The current condition calls for measure this kind. Not rating is a good idea under the current conditions. Unless your in the WA for a x number of time, you dont know what they conditions are. Linden dam well whats is going on are are thinking about this action of non rates. I don`t understand what your point is. LL needs to put their plans in to action and fast.

Last Friday, one of this new crew logged in, and immediately said to another user, before even saying hello to anyone: "Is it my computer, or is your ass REALLY fat?!" It was then that I decided this would be a good policy, as when I checked the person's profile, she had +15 positive rates given, and close to -300 negatives given. I believe negs given tells you more about a person than any other rate.

Unfortunately, banning neg-raters or disabling rating wouldn't stop this kind of heckling -- griefers would just learn to create alts with which they stand around in WA griefing newcomers without neg-rating. To new folks, who don't have a history with the rating system, that's probably just as hurtful.

Restricting access to the WA to liasons, greeters, mentors, etc. seems kind of extreme, too. It would be nice to be able to at least tp in and meet a friend you've recommended who's just joined up. But that's open to abuse, as a heckler can create an alt, log them in, use that to tp their main heckling alt in, etc. Or just use a trial alt and dispose of it when caught.

Probably 24/7 undercover Linden (or similarly powered) monitoring of the WA is the only solution. Folks who engage in this kind of activity are folks SL can do without, IMHO.

Arrg mine keeps rezing too many $L and it needs to be picked.
3. Free stuff, Yardnies junkyard, FurFree, ect...

6. A link to the Forum, the wiki, and the scripting wiki.
7. Wonders of the world like the 4D house.

An inworld guide to stuff would be helpful.

I get a lot of newbies at my site and I try to be helpful, but I can't be on line much.

Would that include an alternate default script with the GLORIOUS function llOwnerSay() that no one uses and should?
