Turn on Shiny as Default Setting?

The other thread about local lighting has inspired me to ask; why not turn on SHINY as an option as the default?

I run SL on a suite of machines and have noticed very little impact on frame rate from the shiny option, and amongst builders, shiny has an almost-scary religious following. These machines include the high end machines, but also a 2.0 ghz machine with 512 megs ram and a 128 meg nvidia 5200.

My thoughts: shiny should be enabled on any machine by default that has the minimum spec of 2.0 ghz, 512 megs ram, and a 5200 nvidia (or ati equivalent) or higher. Of course, users could turn it off if they wish, but having shiny on REALLY makes SL look like a whole new world with minimal impact on frame rate, and I've found very few people know about it and have it on.

What say you? :)

Regards,

-Flip

Occasionally customers (who don't read the read-me) will complain that my boots don't shiny like the ones on the box :D It would be nice if this were turned on by default.

I turned shiny on about 8 monts ago and noticed only a slight decrease in performance but over time with the upgrades I noticed a severe drop in performance expecially at the Welcome Area and other places that had a lot of people in the sims. I have the same computer now as I did when I turned shiny on but now with it on I get terrible lag along with cyclical screen lockups of about 6 to 7 seconds and then about 30 seconds of lag. I didn't know that shiny option was causing the problem for quite a while until I turned it off on a whim. I guess the patches and upgrades have made more demands on bandwidth and graphic proccessing over time so it's about time to upgrade to dual core and SLI just to keep up with it :(

Yes, turn shiny on automaticly when minimum specs are sufficient. The day i turned shiny on was day of great rejoice.

As long as we can turn it off (and have it stay off) I don't really care if its a turn it off or turn it on, as long as theres the option.

I'll never forget seeing Cubey's vehicles for the first time with shiny. I threw away my brandnew ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and went and bought myself a Nvida card.

I've since learnt ways of making things look nice without using shine mode. As time goes on, I'm slowly turning my back on all of SL's features. It's why I'm so in favour of seeing Second Life simplified and an 'Upload Mesh' option adding.

Heck, even the scripters are starting to use external editors now. LL are adding features and people aren't really using them. Either because they're bugged, effect performance or just too simple.

I'd like to see the client/viewer made into just that. A viewer and nothing else. Break SL's avatar editing features, build tools, script editor etc into smaller apps. Then residents can create better versions of those applications. I'm going to cry if I see another bug added to the build tools.

But I'm just nuts. So don't listen to me.

Sorry for rambling :)

Shiny causes a fairly hefty FPS loss for my systems. Unless I am on an island, I run SL w/ nearly all features off.

Hmm, when did they change from the old style shiny, which I prefered, to the new style?

Shiny is the only thing I have on permanently. When I finally did turn it on, I discovered that I had all my prims, even the trees, on high shine. How embarassking. :p

Ahem, so having it on by default would be nice. If the person's system can handle it. And it just makes so many things coolio-ser.

Since the last update, Shiny has been bugged for me, as I discovered yesterday.
Installed the most recent update (the optional one) and had Shiny off for a couple of days, then turned it on as I do usually have it on and found that around 90% of the time SL was knocking my cable modem offline.
Not realising what was causing it, I cleared cache, uninstalled, and re-installed SL, contacted Live Help, contacted my ISP, scanned my system for any bugs that may somehow have snuck in, everything. But still it would knock my cable modem offline.

Then last night, I turned it off as I was going to a high lag area, and suddenly SL stopped throwing my cable modem offline. Played around with shiny for a while, turning it off, then on, and every time it was on, yep, same thing, cable modem would be knocked out.

So somewhere, somehow it has to be sending some buggy info to my computer. Not techy enough minded to know why or what, but would like it fixed, I miss my shiny :(

Shiny doesn't seem to hit my framerate at all. Early on I played with the options and tried turning on each one individually to see what impact it had on framerate. The only one that gave me a lot of trouble was local lighting. As a result, every option but Local Lighting is turned on in my client. :)

Yes, but shiny doesn't work yet in the Linux client. Or at least I haven't gotten it to.

I need my Shiny.
I almost went mad without it.
If nothing else, I have shiny.
I still rarely turn on Local Lighting.

Well, its hardly a huge sampling, but the overall consensus is turn it on, at least for minimum spec machines! LL, please make it so! :-)

49 / 61 votes for at least turning on for minimum spec = 80.32% - I'd call that an overwhelming majority!

No, ewww, shiny is UUUUUUUUGLY! I've got a couple of avs I hardly use any more because I bought them with Shiny Off and had no idea what they looked like to people with shiny on.

And they're no mod, of course.

Yes to default=SHINY ON! Think how much better SL will look to new arrivals fanning out from the WA. Especially when they hit Nova Albion, which is getting shinier every day. ; )

If this means less lag then im all for it. If it means I have to download a dozen programs to build anything decent then I'm against it :D

After previous Resident knowledge-gathering, which wasn't as summatious as this poll (more info helps!), I'd previously made a recommendation that Shiny be turned on by default, specifically if if you meet the System Recommendations or higher.

I remember being very confused at the start of my Second Life, to be told certain avatars were shiny--notably Huns Valen at the Prim Attack table in the old Ahern-Morris Welcome Area--and I couldn't see the difference. I thought I had to look really hard. It just turned out, that shiny was off.

Shiny is commonly used in SL, including on very "techy" builds and vehicles. It's a general part of the experience, and of course, has found its way into our SLexicon as well. :)

I <3 shiny. Even though I run on a (crappy) 1.6 GHz laptop, I constantly have shiny on, and use it constantly.

OK< how about this. Turn shiny on by default ONLY IF you get me some kind of invisiprim I can put around my non-mod shiny avs and disable it for my own stuff.
