I just tested this...

When I run SecondLife using winex on Linux, I get a ton of debugging output to the terminal I ran newview.exe from... Part of this output contains the chat text I send, and hear... However, it does not contain usefull (to me, at least) information about IMs, except for possibly the key of the person you're talking to.

Oh well, for a moment I thought I had a good idea..

/bump

Although I solved my computer's problem, SL's stability has been ~meh~ as of late and I have lost important IMs, again.

PLEASE implement this!

Hi Hiro.

I dunno if you've updated the Radeon video drivers recently, but the latest set (I got em on Jan/23/2005) from ATI has resolved almost all the video related crashes for me (I still very rarely crash but only on VERY laggy simms).

I was crashing constantly when I first started in SL and couldn't figure out why as every other application/game I had was ROCK stable. I figured the conventional wisdom about ATI and SL was correct and I'd have to get an Nvidea based card.

As a last resort, I tried the lateast ATI drivers and they are GREAT with SL. I have not found any other applications/games with 'new' bugs from the new drivers either.

I'm running XP-pro with an ATI 9700pro 128Mb using this driver set now: wxp-w2k-8-09-041221m-020455c.exe

If you already updated, hopefully this helps somebody else out there with ATI/SL issues.

Oh, I've long since ditched my Radeon card. I appreciate your time in your response, though... if indeed that fixed SL issues, then a lot of people are going to be happy.

I support chat and IM logging to disk. I do it manually currently, for conversations related to projects, in which a lot of technical information has been exchanged and I need a record. I'd prefer to leave it on and possibly be asked "Keep or destroy chat/IM log?" on normal exit. But it should probably have a toggle in the UI for those who don't want it running.

Since we can get the log already, I have a hard time understanding what problem the Lindens have with automatically saving it. Trying to protect us from ourselves, re hard drive space?

I suppose they could require some visible indication that the logs are being written out, e.g. changing the color of your "hat" or something, but since we can get to the logs already, that seems unnecessary.

I've certainly had cases where I needed to have a record of what was said, and either crashed, or I simply didn't realize how important the dialog was until after I'd had to relog. (relog: controlled crash)

If the issue was filling up our hardrives, we could have a slider that might range from 8k to 8M (or something like that, I'd think that 8M of text should be plenty). This chat log could automatically rollover whenever it exceeded the defined size. Perhaps the value should be set to 0k by default.

.

Excellent point.

Yeah, like when someone griefs you repeatedly in a minor nuisance way, and then when you finally report them, you wish you had a record.

Or when you are falsely abuse reported, and you wish you had the proof to back it up.

Hmm...

Uru client has the facility to start/stop chat logs. It keeps three of those max and just rotates them out, plus they're opt-in (must enter a '/' command).

I've quickly realized that it would be a good idea to implement something like this. I'm going to be holding a bunch of discussions soon, most of which I want to condense into notecards for saving and handing out later (not immediately, just so I can keep my thoughts straight as I condense within the next day or two).

Should not be *that* hard to implement...

/bump, since we had a 3-day offline IM outage, it just reinforced the need for it

Log to disk would be great. I've also had lost IM's due to crashing problems, and it's frustrating to say the least. Good suggestions all.
