Curious as to whether anyone has ever suggested that new sims ought to be created modeled on "RL other worlds". Right now SL is largely the same -- subtropical earth, apparently, or perhaps a Med climate.

Any thought given to creating continents or sims which "look" like Mars, Io, Titan, say? The look of the land, sea and sky would be different --

No sea on Mars, maybe sand or large cliffs at the edge.
Molten sulphur and iron seas on Io.
Methane seas on Titan.

Objects in the skies would be different, no Moon -- Phobos & Deimos on Mars at night, Jupiter or Saturn rising in day and night on Io and Titan, spreading across the sky, smaller sun, different light level and hues.

We could draw the line at life-support, or maybe require it?

Just one of those Monday-morning-going-to-work thoughts that gets me out the door. . . .

That would be cool, maybe even the gravity levels be different (if thats possible).

Also a outer space Sim would be interisting, no ground at all, you just float and have to use prepulshion to get around, could have a giant space station.

I'm all for other worlds. :)

The one we have now is rather small though, so maybe after a few more years work on the other worlds.

That is an excellent idea - at this point, I would just settle for some variety in the landscape of some of the sims - snow, desert, etc.. the only difference in the various sims really is how it has been terraformed and the builds in it - the land itself is very generic looking and repetitive. That is one thing I miss from There (yes, I did like something about There) - I thought the geography was much more interesting - the areas were distinctive and colorful, and contributed a lot to the experience. Each region had its own feel, and I would like to see more of that in SL, now that the world is growing so quickly. Hopefully the time spent on the new terraforming tools also includes more interesting terra to form ;)

PS - Oz, you are totally missing the boat, less carbs is where it is at, fat is good. ;)

this is a good idea. but would people want to live in a sim that was perpetually snowy. sl seems, even over the short time i've been here, to be all about change and adaptation. i think i'd rather see something like the ability to choose from a few different ground textures. but then we'd end up with helterskelter this and that scattered around.

i guess it will have to be a permenant thing and probably should be sim wide. the lindens haven't been responding to posts like this much lately though. i suppose we'll have to wait until everybody has land in the first place before we hear anything.

one vote for a green sky with bright orange planetary rings sweeping overhead! it'd be just like home.

oh... did i post that out loud?

I love all of these ideas...
It'd be so neat to have climatic/terrain variations on the "main body" of SL sims... And maybe a detached area for special rule sims with alternate gravity, other worlds, space (always night, no ground)...

I would like to see some attention gven to the sky. The stars should twinkle. And, we should have identifiable constellations, such as the Hippo or the Haney. Occasional northern or southern lights would be cool. Shooting stars too.

Maybe custom ground textures would be cool...

I vote for terraforming tools that alter the color of terrains to match a landscape we're interested in. A cold white or grey for a frozen atmosphere; light yellow grains for desert. This is something I've been thinking about for a long while now, and I think, if implemented, it would revolutionize the game. I really mean that.

We have a moon. Make a few moon sims looking back at SL Earth. Neato.

If I recall correctly, the stars are actually generated randomly (okay, pseudo-randomly) every "night"... possibly by the client!

That said, identifiable constellations would be cool for sure. :)

Yeah, we really -do- need deserts 'n tropics 'n icey stuff.

'course, that would imply the creation of a global weather system.

I like the idea of identifiable constellations. That'd make it easier for people like Jay Powers (where IS he these days?) -- Jay built a Stonehenge somewhere and started trying to figure out the SL cosmos somewhere back last summer. :D

Space Port Sim
02-11-2004 13:43
If we do go for an orbital or outerspace sim, as well as a luna sim, It would be neat to have a Cape Carnival, a sim designed to be the connection to the space sim, which then connects to the Luna sims, and other planetary sims.

Build your own space ship, take off from Cape Carnival, connect with the orbital station or blast on to the Beyond!:)

The stars actually do twinkle, I was surprised to see one "night". It is most apparent in mouselook and I do run at pretty high resolution (1600x1200) but yep, they do. Neat trick, that.

Tell you something I thought I noticed yesterday in the new sims. Twice.

Meteors. "Falling stars". Streaks of light from the meridian to the horizon.

True?

I have also seen several 'blue moons' (took a screenshot)

Wow! i was just thinking about this...
02-12-2004 08:23
Just a couple days ago i was driving around thinking about how it would be cool to have a desert area.. other climates would be cool too.

They could limit deserts to particular sims in a designated region/continent. Same for colder/snowy climates.. have them only available in northern and southern sims.. ones that may not exist yet.. in future expansions maybe?

And i like the idea of plotting out the stars.. if i get the time, i'll try to plot out some recognizable constellations.. which works well with my plan for an observatory! :)

But these are all great ideas! ..hopefully they get recognized and implemented!

Until after now,

why can't I texture my land?
02-12-2004 12:35
Slowly but surely people are trying to change the world into a more climatic one, but because most sims are owned by so many people, it takes a whole lot of teamwork to make it a reality :( But the world is slowly shifting that direction I think. Groups of people terraforming the world into something better:)

So the question is: why can't I texture my land?
That would be excellent if they figured that one out.

If you have never seen the National Parks, you should check them out. The SL Parks & Rec Svc is trying very hard to naturalize the world :)

Hmm, you know what, what you're talking about is not climatic one, but a "seasonal" one. The sims go through the seasons appropriate to their location on the map.

The sims at the far north go through winter, while the southern sims have summer.

A 3 Dimensional "space station" type SIM
02-23-2004 05:10
Our SIMs are largely 2 dimensional, with everything
concentrated on only the ground. Occasionally, someone will
put something up in Cardova, which is so high. you can't even get to it, except with only certain vehicles.

Think if a "Babylon 5" themed SIM or something similar was made, that made use of the whole 3 dimensional space of the SIM. You could get a lot of interesting stuff into it.

Hey Frostybeard, stop by Gray sometime. We've got something pretty close to what you are describing. What would make it really cool is if the sky shaded to black at high altitudes. (And since 768 meters is as high as you can reliably build, it should be "space" by then.)
