In my completely biased opinion, SL time should be UTC but thats mainly because its exactly the same time as GMT.
On a note where i can try to be unbiased it makes more sense in the face thats its in the middle. It does give off a slightly small minded view that LL feel San fran is the core of SL. Maybe it is but Europe doesn't like having events at 1 am. Makes us feel inferior.

Well events will still be at 1am, you'll just feel better about yourself because you don't need to convert because you're in Europe.

Keep SL time, but please could I have a button I can press which converts on screen times to my local time for a few seconds.

i do actually really hate the fact that almost always when i play its nighttime in SL and everything is dark and dim. is there a way to override the daylight mode for all places you visit ?
-- the user defined offset sounds good too like 4:00pm SL - 7am gmt.. or whatever

Debug->World->Force Sunset (or basically it cycles to sunrise if it's night)
I think activating the debug menu is done with ctrl+alt+D, but I might be missing a key in there.

Sweet, now I get attention on forums too. ^.^;
Actually a mouse over on the SL clock and event listings that shows your time (so hovering over a 1 PM listing in the events would show instead 4 PM for me, or 9 PM for you Europeans) would be nice. But again, I'd like to do away with AM/PM and just go for the 24 hour clock idea.

Why not just script yourself a HUD atatched clock.
you could use llGetTimeOfDay() for the day/night phase and llGetGMTclock() for any timezone.
