MASSIVE land infusion.

I would like to request a massive influx of new land/auctioning.

Like, 3 continents' worth. All sold at auction at the same time. Not staggered, simultaneously.

Land prices are getting a bit ridiculous for the new person, even by my capitalist standards.

Flood the market, please.

Alternatively, make it easier for people to have home land without buying.

Sure thing LF, how about ponying up some of the dough for them instead of just whining about it? :)

Eggy gets this thread's award for being first to accuse the original poster of whining. Now we just need a decent unprovoked personal attack, someone to hint at either a real life or alt account 'factoid', and we're well on the way to another productive thread.

ll are steadily striking a balance between their customers being happy enough to maintain a tier & releasing land in a way that makes them the most money possible.

that isn't going to change. there are a couple of reasons that both goals are being shorted. one is the lack of feedback. several intelligent arguments for inworld data collection have been offered on the forums and patently ignored.

the other is the mixture of real money and lindens. for them, the game is maintaining a false sense of economy in an environment where nothing exists. the arguments for object downloads to xml haven't been ignored mind you. they've just said "no" making their job even more difficult. instead they talk of legal codes over which they have absolutely no control.

I pay my monthly fee, thanks. :)

For every private sim going up, they have the money to buy another pizza box. For every couple of public sims, just from the auctioning process, they have enough to buy another pizza box.

I say buy another chunk of 100 computers and then rock out with some mad terraforming.

Actually, from the US$ auctioning process (you can view the latest unscientific stats on US$ income from the auctions in this thread), Linden Labs can afford 7 new sims added to the grid for FREE for every 3 they auction off at US$. (Assuming a sim costs US$980 to install).

Bingo eggy. But really, you have any idea how much that would cost? Try to buy something like 300 servers from intel. Then think about how much it would be to maintain those.

Lordfly, are we forgetting that LL developers have to eat?
How much money does a 30-person company need to spend in salaries just to stay afloat? Do i need to remind you that SL is like the smallest MMOG in existence, and also the one with the highest costs (30 ppl per server?)
Are you aware that LL probably isnt even breaking even yet?
I'm sure if they had the cashflow and the userbase to justify tripling the size of the world, they would.

The way to make more money is to grow. It's a sliding cost of scale. The more servers they have, the less they cost per unit to maintain. If they can't grow, they can't get more money, eggy. If they can't get money right now with the resources they have, they go under.

If they're not making money now, what with the inflated land prices at auction (couple hundred $US per virtual acre), $10 per lifetime account (times 7,000 users), monthly fees (average per land owner: around $25, that's at least $25,000 in land fees), and private sims (21 at last count, $4000 a month right there), they'll never pull a profit.

The key to profit is to keep growing.

Yeah, to grow WITH DEMAND. As they are doing. Suddenly growing beyond demand in one fell swoop would be corporate suicide. You also have to remember it takes a LOT of work and time for LL to create, terraform, and even theme new regions, this costs man hours and thus money too. They keep a very close eye on supply and demand hence why they recently doubled the amount of land going up for auction daily. It is this careful monitoring and adjusting that I applaud the Lindens for and hope they'll maintain it because I hope to see them still around in a year or five.

Hey it's not as simple as buying more machines, they have to connect all that crap, do who knows what else to be able to back them up and whatever else, and they have to have the space for them... :p

Maybe they're running outta room! Or maybe there's too many now, and the computer room is getting warm, so they need a brand new giant AC unit! Or maybe their tape backup machines suck and they need more! Or maybe their power supplies and/or emergency power systems suck! Or maybe they only have one person to "build" and maintain new servers! Or maybe...I'm being silly?

I wonder if this is really happening. I want to see some photos of LL's offices and servers space. I want to see where Haney, Char, Philip, and all of the other lindens work. And I want to know if the computers are being treated humanely, in a cold, dry room.

There is a huge infusion of land via private sims now. Several estates as huge as 30000 sqm a piece have been sold by people moving to their own islands.

Snow sim situation has also relaxed a little. I saw average prices drop 2-3 L$ per sqm in snow sims this weekend. Taking 10 snow sims from market and reserving them for projects might have shortage effect on market though... unless Linden plans to add some more snow sims to make up :-)
