What if Scripting was like using Lego Bricks?

pffft wait for Mono. Then assuming LL allows, you can code in any CLI language. I expect Mono will be in 2.0

Jeffrey,

I'm in a dilemma here, because I hear what you are saying, but the conversation is continuing. I've made the decision to carry on discussing the idea, disregarding the source (and possible original intent).

Keknehv, I don't think the idea would be to replace LSL, but to provide a simple drop-in module which would handle several common tasks without scripting, using dialog boxes or some other simple interface. At least, that was my interpretation. We could do this today, so it wouldn't require waiting for Mono or any other LL updates. I see no point in removing existing tools to enable simpler tools for those who want or need them.

(Maybe it will be my turn to get flamed next....)

Fair enough. It's just... argh.

I'm going to try to pretend it never happened since I've gotten it out of my system.

This is actually the crux of my opinion, and one I continue to hold. Once more, I'll urge anyone that wants this done to drop a list on us in Scripting Tips, with behaviors you'd like to see.

WYSIWIG editors will no doubt eventually make there was into SL, like they have for the web. They will be good for toy projects but will still require a professional scripter to create modern objects. Your better off making friends with a scripter... the metaverse is all about collaboration! What might be more useful however would be a community run place that would facilitate sharing of useful functions in a standardize api type format. I'm thinking CPAN here.

I made a suggestion in the Hotline forum to add something called the Freeware folder (in addition to the Library folder) that anyone who wanted to give away their creations could drop things into. I think that could serve as something like CPAN for LSL. (It would also help clear out bulging inventories, as I think a lot of people, like myself, are only carrying around some stuff because we picked it up somewhere and don't know where we would find it again... and it *might* be useful someday... ;) )

Nice... Shared group folders would be even better. People interested in scripts would just join one of I'm sure many groups that would pop up dedicated to good scripting. This also provides some moderation, so the shared folder wouldn't get filled up with every crackpot script out there.

You're right, shared group folders would be a really nice feature. I didn't see them as quite the huge inventory slimmer that the Freeware folder could be, so I stuck to the Freeware suggestion in my Hotline comment, and Robin seemed to really like the idea. I think it's worth suggesting shared group folders as well, though. I suggest you try the Hotline, and if they tell you to create a feature proposal, let us know, so we can all figure out if we have votes for it.
