Wow, I've been here all of two days, don't even have a graphic for my forum posts yet, and even I know that flying has got to be one of the coolest parts of the game. (And building, of course.) That being said, I was thinking of building some small RPG type things later, and it would be handy to be able to turn off flying just in those areas. But for all I know, that's doable already. I bumped into some kind of glass ceiling last night that kept me from flying somewhere. Anyway, I could just ask players not to fly during the game if their characters can't fly, the same way I ask tabletop RPG players not to use their real-world skills (e.g. science knowledge) in a game when they wouldn't be appropriate. No biggie. I'd *much* rather see avatar-like NPCs. What's the problem with that, anyway, may I ask? Too much resource usage? Fear that it would lead to more bots than real people? Fear that someone would write too convincing a 'bot? They could all be forced to have " NPC)" after their names or something. Not like we wouldn't be able to tell anyway. Just wondering, e.d.

No-fly is a setting in land options.
NPC avatars are a possibility in the future, but not something that's a high priority.
Personally, I don't want them. A group of ten real avatars slows my computer down enough. Just think what will happen when every vendor is an NPC?

The one time I went to There, All I asked people was "How do I fly?" Well you cant, unless you buy a special jetpack thingy. Even with their crappy vehicles, flight sucked in There. It was slow and inflexible. Khamon, LordFly et al, can you point me to where on the website this is being marketed as a game? It is, at best, a social world like There, but with the content development tools integrated into the client. A game is something that you can win. It is something that has a clearly stated goal and rules that you must follow. How do you "win" in SL? What are the rules?

From: someone Originally posted by Michi Lumin Some people have wings. So if you disable my fly, you're infringing on my pseudorealistic semirealism.
While we're at it, why don't we make everyone ugly and overweight too.
Please stop drinking the Clorox. It's not good for you. Comet is much tastier than Clorox, anyhoo. ^^ And I agree! All of us wingy-things would be terribly put-out if our wings stopped working! Not everyone in SL is one of those boring human things.

From: someone Originally posted by Cubey Terra I like this idea. Then I'd sell more planes and rocket packs And own the market on cool flying things. While flying around using normal "Avatar Only Flight" you get to see things you normally wouldn't be able to see if you were in an aircraft or jetting around at high altitudes. Aircraft, rocket packs, and (warnng plug) all the neat cehicles around Abbots are for those of us who want a change of pace or who want to get around faster than normal flying. Personally with my Adelphia connection, taking a vehicle from place to place is much more safer for my avatar than using the teleport.

It is something that has a clearly stated goal and rules that you must follow. How do you "win" in SL? What are the rules? SL is called "3d entertainment" in several spots within the website. Most reporters report SL as a "game". Funny, too, that the reporters are usually in direct contact with Robin Linden prior to writing their story... you would think she would correct them? 90% of the folks that have heard of SL refer to it as a "game". It's in direct competition with other "games", including There, TSO (which can be found in the "games" department at EB"Games" , and Activeworlds. All are considered "games" by all but a few hardcore fans. You can call it a "3d virtual world enchancement studio of justice" til you turn blue in the face, but the fact of the matter is that it's a "game". A rose by any other name... Sure, WITHIN the "game" genre of things it's a virtual world, but if you need to classify it, it's a GAME. It's not a bike, it's a Kawasaki VCG9000! DONT CALL IT A BIKE! *froths at the mouth* It's not a computer, it's a PENTIUM4 2.3ghz!!!!!!!111oneoneeleven1111!!! don't call it a computer!!!!! yargh. LF
