I can see both sides of this one. I have a tiny narrow starter plot with minimal rather naturalistic builds, and the folks next to me have put in this huge structure with flames coming out of the roof, plus they've decided to bar entry, so I've got the red stripes in my view if I face that way. That's kind of unfortunate. I could solve the problem by buying a bigger plot of land (in fact, I had an option to buy this particular patch), but my RL finances don't really support this. I would rather like to be able to hide their build, at least some of the time, and pretend to myself that I'm alone on this chunk of hillside. OTOH, one never gets to know one's neighbors that way. Not that mine ever seem to be at home.
Guess I should just plant a few more trees along the border and get over it... hope they change their minds about the build, or sell to someone with tastes more like mine, or whatever. I have learned in my short time here that neighbors are rather like New England weather -- if you don't like what you've got, wait a bit. Neko _____________________

A) It's against the CS to create an "annoyance" build. Creating a mute function would result in LL taking fewer steps to remove annoyance builds and more to just say "Oh, just mute it", which never solves anything. I mean this with only the sarcasm born of bitter experience... How could they possibly do less then they already do? Quite simply, I've been next door to some of the the absolute worst annoyance builds I've ever seen and the lindens have flat out refused to help. Not just ignored me, refused to help. |

Ayup, if there was someone I could beg to do this for us, I would. An optional "mute" for parcels you do not wish to see would solve an enormous number of problems.
On the neutral side, it would end most complaints about ugly builds, view-blocking builds, giant malls, empty 'black box' clubs, etc, etc... On the more subjective side, it would make land griefers, extortionists, and visually abusive types powerless. Consider the land owner's house surrounded by a crowd of spammed "Impeach Bush" signs. In a few seconds, they could have clear skies again with this feature enabled. And even if the sign owner's intentions were honorable, no harm done. If the house owner is turning his plots of in his/her client, then they weren't looking at them anyways. It's my opinion that, in a few months with this feature existing, that sort of land griefing and black-mailing will end, since it will no longer have a purpose or any impact. And then, maybe we will see a day when this feature is not so needed. And to those against the idea... why? If you don't want plots turned off in your client... don't turn them off. |

Molecular, I don't think anyone was suggesting that we be able to "Turn off' the view of anyone else's avatar, only their builds. Anything of their person, their clothing, and presumably attached objects would remain visible. About the wierdest thing you'd experience would be seeing groups of people hanging around and dancing on thin air, for example if you "muted" the parcel that an annoying club is in. I think muted avs should be replaced by Primitar. |

I'm all for that. Preserved freedom for everyone: freedom to build things other might not like, and freedom for others to just not see them anymore. This does seem to be simple and workable, I wonder why it doesn't get put into effect? The Linden's must be want us to be a captive audience for ads. Kind of like why there is no convenient "Mute Commercials" button on TV sets. Failing to support being able to block seeing unwanted things is supporting the commercial advertising that will be the main income source of Linden Lab in the future. |
