This is jsut an idea... but i think it would b a good idea if you had animals that run around SL.... like little squirrels or deer... or maybe even jsut birds... or butterflies... those little things could b really cool in the game! Id have a blast chasing a little squirrel around the sim... lol

I kind of like this idea - I would be more than happy to open up a nature preserve or zoo if there were life like animals I could stock them with (my apologies to all of my furry friend - Adam Blair, you big furry goofball).

I think it would be a great boon to SL.

I am hoping that they can - the animals don't have to be intensive, but they should look realistic. I think quite a few residents would love the idea, even the furries.

Actually, they do read these posts. I got my idea for categorizing the classifieds approved just the other day. So yeah, lets keep talking about it and get the Lindens attention.

I remember there was a guy who had a scripted bird that would fly all over the place. It was sort of cool, not sure what happened to that project.

Garth and Pituca have butterflies and frogs that you can program to fly and hop around your own land. You can probably search "fairchang" to find them.

There are some birds flying around Seacliff. There were fireflies, but now that the sun never sets, they don't come out any more.

There also were some butterflies, but no one's had those out in a long while.

garth has a bird as well. it perches and takes off to fly randomly about with in the confines of its box, then after some randomly generated time, reperches. you never know when it'll take off or land or what pattern it'll fly in.

critters can be built into the client like the linden trees are. they can be created as an invisible cube that is sized and placed like any other prim. all the server will have to do is tell us that the animal cube of given size exists at given points. then the client will generate the animal and scurry it around with the confines of the cube.

one downside will be that they can only roam 100sm on the ground or 1000 if they fly. another alternative is for them to add edit parameters for animal prims that let you set corner coordinates within the sim so the space could be larger. there'd still need to be a limit i'm sure.

another odd thing will be that, just like trees, everybody won't be seeing the things in the same places at the same times. everybody's client will be randomly running the things around according to their own calculations. it'll still be super cute, but not consistent.

There are also Yip Yips, dragons, horses, jelly fish, fish & sharks.

The lindens do read the forums... just not enough.

I would like to see custom skeletons & NPC's as then you could build animals.

Implementing this as a feature ruins the fun of making your own semi-"sentient" behavior mimic pet. But on the inverse Ive seen some pet experiments go horribly awry...

Personally, I like user created animals. Of course I am biased because of our scripted pet dogs (available in Kuula (214, 124))

If they would fix the rotation scripting problem so you could have hiarchial rotations within an object we could make our own animate animals, and other things.

Is anyone selling pet birds? Like the one mentioned above, that someone named garth has? I was going to try to make my own, but I'm new to this, so I'd like to see an example if I could.

Animals (and scriptable NPC avatars) were two top items in my survey response. I've been informed that scriptable avatars would create a large server load. I'm guessing animals would too. Too bad, because an animal creator, like the avatar tools, would be really cool. Choose the limb number, length, surface type (fur, scales, etc), add horns wherever, etc. Next thing you know, we'd have hippogriffs and even weirder things all over the place. Sounds cool to me.

But what do I know, I've only been here a week.

Garth and I have the butterflies, a frog and a duck that move randomly about. And he made a dove, but that was special order. So he developed the crow that moves about as Khamon explained. It has a great caw too! hehe

We have fish in our aquarium that swim randomly about (not in a circle). You can see the aquarium on our residence liner on FairChang Island. We have been meaning to put them in our sea too but just haven't had the time.

He scripted one of Sulumor's hawks to fly around our Taber property too, but we took it in as Taber was suffering lag problems.

IM me Neko if you want more information.

I've started to learn scripting chiefly to make dynamic animals and whatnot.

I've got an aquarium in testing in my house in southern grignano (not as good as garth's, yet). I also have fireflies floating about outside.

I'll eventually code up some birds that fly around, maybe some flowers that grow, stuff like that. Assuming my work schedule lets me, that is.

At the moment, I'm interested in a parrot (a bit smaller than the one in the library, and different colors -- a Quaker parrot) that sits on or near me, flaps its wings, flies around occasionally, flies when I'm flying, and sometimes says amusing things. I think I can handle the scripting portion of a lot of this as I have a programming background. But 3d graphics are new to me. Examples would help. I'll IM Pituca next time I'm in world.

I scripted the firebirds that are gliding around Seacliff, and I made some birds that were free to fly around the whole world. Now that the bug with objects being auto-returned too fast is fixed, I'll try releasing some more of the world-explorer birds.

I've also got some butterflies fluttering around my place in Davenport.

Pituca,

I have one of those sea gulls that randomly fly around your property. I'd love to get it going again, the only problem being that my property is now very irregular in shape, and the sea gull was designed to move within a rectangle.

I would like to try to modify the script, but unfortunately it's set so that I can't.

I wonder whether you could make, or modify, one of your flying scripts, and sell it to me as a modifiable script? I could then stick it in the sea gull - it would be great to see it winging its way around again. :)

Edited to spell your name right. :-o

But I want lions and tigers and bears (oh my!), not just dogs and fish! I want a whole zoo!

Hi all

I love making creatures although it is my better half (Pituca Chang) who sells and profits from them ;)

I did not make the seagull but have a similar script written by myself.

I have a crow but the script is not player friendly yet. I am thinking of combining my methods so that it will fly within a 'box' area but also check if the area it is trying to get to is owned by the creatures owner. It returns to a set point set by the player (or it will do when finished)

Another idea is to make the bird mod/copy/no transfer so that owners can recolor/texture to suit what they want. Maybe even sell a sound pack for different birds?

What do you think?

Garth,

Include a texture template to make it easy to color the bird, and you've got yourself a customer. :)

I especially like the ability to modify it myself -- I'm trying to learn LSL, and it really helps to look at good examples, and perhaps tweak them a bit. For example, to make the bird fly when I fly.
