I believe that SL is strong enough for LL to stop policing SL and acting like “big brother.” Individual players should be disciplined (i.e. suspended, banned, etc...) by a volunteer, resident police force that would not have the omniscience and legal power of LL. This police force would also serve as a sort of “judiciary” in that it would determine punishment for all offenses. This would allow for SL to become more like RL. Compared to the system LL has in place, yes, “crime” would be somewhat encouraged. But isn’t there a market for it? SL is all about information exchange, collaboration, etc... There is a somewhat diverse pool of journalistic and info-exchange productions (i.e. newspapers, blogs, forums, etc...) that would benefit with exciting chases and chaotic events that would follow as the result of such change. Simply put, it would be cool to watch. I really don’t think there would be that much of a negative change, it would just be, well, different. Police would have to figure out a) WHAT was done, b) WHO did it, c) ARREST the individual(s) responsible (through an arranged “capture” script), and finally, quickly d) TRY the case. Any comments on either the concept of LL responsibility in SL in general or my idea specifically? Post ‘em here!

Volunteer fellow players, acting as judge, jury, and executioner? No. No no no. People can't even be trusted to be honest on an anonymous thing like rating systems; you really expect politics, grudges, favoritism, and popularity to NOT be factored in on a volunteer police force? What's to stop someone with a beef that's on the police force extending a motion to permaban, say, me, fo no reason other than I didn't give him a refund on a prefab house? In theory, the other police would act as a checks and balances system. But uh, that doesn't work. I hate to evoke Godwin's Law 4 posts in, but Hitler was in fact voted in by a democracy. I trust no one to bust out the proverbial whooping stick except paid Linden Lab worker bees. The rest of you can fuck off, all due respect. LF

So you think it's okay if "'crime' would be somewhat encouraged" because it'd supply fodder for the tabloids? Okay, let's get this crime spree started by feeding you to Bat Boy.

Residents "playing Police, Judge and Jury" to have some "more fun" in SL? Nawwww!

From: Trevor Matador This would allow for SL to become more like RL. Really? In a desireable way? From: Trevor Matador Compared to the system LL has in place, yes, “crime” would be somewhat encouraged. Forgive me, but this sounds a little bit, like you see a kind of "interesting" side in crime in that it produces interesting "news" and something to talk about. Funny attitude ... From: Trevor Matador Police would have to figure out a) WHAT was done, b) WHO did it, c) ARREST the individual(s) responsible (through an arranged “capture” script), and finally, quickly d) TRY the case. Have you ever spend a minute thinking about why in all non-autocratic states Police is seperate from Jurisdiction and Legislation?

Haha... this would be a trip... Let the residents be their own police force... That's so crazy it probably wouldn't even work. I can only imagine how many corrupt cops would be running around letting their friends get away with all sorts of negative activities, the griefers would run rampant and chaos would ensue. While on the surface it sounds like it could be fun for role playing or what not, it would be a hassle and if all goes well, most of the populace will quit the game.

um. no.
you just have to look at these forums to see that people all have their own biases and agendas. There is no way you could trust a resident run police force. And lets face it, most of the people that would volunteer are just the kind of people you DONT want to give that kind of power to.

why start with the notion of police as a punitive force? I find this idea to be disastrous. OTOH if you want to start a local constabulary that does stuff like helps newbies get prims out of particle trees, and steal the occasional apple from a farmstand I say go for it.

Hey guys, gals: Has no one EVER gotten angry before? Has no one EVER wanted to wreak havoc, just ONCE in a pretend world, just to see the reactions of others? Not to say that I have, but SL is obviously a big social experiment, definitely NOT a utopiatic society, and as such, we must allow all forms of expression: both positive and negative rage. POSITIVE RAGE is a more evolved form of the expression of anger and handling of disputes. An example would be when someone steals your car from in front of you, and although you have a gun with you and could easily shoot them, you immediately go through the rules of society and have the individual arrested and tried. Although equitable on a crime by crime basis, this system is prone to leaving the victim dissatisfied with the punishment faced by the criminal, even when punishment is harsh; as opposed to NEGATIVE RAGE which is more of a vigilante-style form of justice. “You steal my car, I shoot you.” In this system, although perhaps less equitable than a central judiciary, the satisfaction of the individual taking justice into his or her own hands is irrefutably more so than that of those following the positive rage example. LL has incorporated an even more evolved system of positve rage in the sense that they are essentially god and have to power to see all, know all, and do all. Now of course we wouldn’t have true vigilante justice, and neither POS nor NEG rage apply entirely to SL due to the major differences between SL and RL, however I want to see some glimpse NORMALCY in a this virtual world of ours. YES, the cops may be crooked and prone to bribes and stuff, but that can only add to the vibrant colour of SL as a whole. The cops wouldn’t be able to access the “Linden Lab Employee” account controls or anything; they’d be regular citizens using LSL scripts to enforce the law. They wouldn’t have the power to observe all us little Avs from the clouds, like gods, listening to our every conversation, recording our every business transaction, etc… I have gone as far as to envision an elimination of banning and suspensions as we now know them. I see a system of prisons, kind of like sandboxes, where “suspended” or “banned” avs must stay until they have served their time. This would be SO awesome, I think. People would still be able to play the game, but they would not be allowed to mingle with the rest of society. I’m saying to myself right now, “wow!” ********************************* Now back to the original question. Has anyone here gotten angry before? I am sure we all have. Has anyone wanted to put justice in their own hands? I guarantee that 99% of us, at some point or another, have. Now...has anyone ever wanted to just cause chaos (not necessarily end human life) for no reason but to see the reactions of others? What about in a virtual world? This would be an entirely normal area of interpersonal communications that we have all, at some point or another, consciously explored. You can’t do that in SL. Why? Because LL has an employee counterpart for every player in SL and watches over players like hawks (or at least that’s the way it seems ). LL suspends and bans players for shooting someone, which in the SL sense means that the individual was merely “pushed.” What if I was exiled to the moon in RL because of the fact that I got push happy and went around shoving a bunch of people I don’t know? That would be insane. Anyway, I’m gonna stop here for now and leave you all with that to ponder at your leisure. Thanks for your responses thus far, very interesting

No. It's just that simple. Why? Besides the obvious issues of favoritism and bias given above, giving players that kind of in-world, generalised power of public domain is a potential legal nightmare for LL. Who do you think would be taking the flak if one of these "SL police" started doling out trouble and absuing powers? People tend to look at and scrutinize the management immediately above that person. Guess who? Linden Labs.
I'm sorry but this is one can of worms that should stay safely buried beneath a few meters of rock and sediment, never ever openned.
If you want SL law enforced, start telling people to help themselves a little. Look into what they think is a crime/violation/abuse and see if it was malicious, deliberate, or ongoing. Do a little of your own detective work and see if you can't calmly resolve an issue between yourself and the person BEFORE you try to go to management with the problem. Remeber the rating system, too. Though I have to say it's kind of junky right now. Most people I would expect to think like me: Why waste 25 lindens to just say "You're a bad, bad boy"? Especially when you can report someone for free and have at least some expectation of results.

Where do you think these policemen would come from? I, of course, couldn’t say that my proposed system would be flawless, but I can, however, say quite well that a system formed BY the people, FOR the people—a system whose only power lies within the trust OF the people would be far greater and more equitable than the profit seeking LL. Did anyone read my last post? This isn’t just about changing WHO is administering justice, this is all about making SL more user oriented—the supposed goal and vision of LL itself. SO… IF such a system proved NOT to be as biased, slanted, and corrupt as everyone here seems to think it would be…what then? What other complaints do you lie down before an executive judiciary composed of your own peers—formed for your own safety—with YOUR best interests in mind?

A judiciary is a good check on abuses of the executive, but do you want to do jury duty for a farking game? I don't.

I merely stated that if it weren't as grossly exaggerated as everyone here seems to believe it would be, and if bad cops could be discharged by something like a resident panel or LL, what then? Yes. So the heirarchy would be pretty simple really. We'd have the Linden Overseers. Who would set up and empower the Resident Police Force. Then a Resident Police Force Complaints Authority who would review everything that the Police Force did and made sure it was above board. Then the Lindens would have to review everything the RPFCA did to make sure that was also handled correctly. Or, we could just forget the idea of a police force and a complaints authority, let the Lindens handle abuse reports and save everyone - especially the Lindens - a lot of trouble! Really, Trevor. It will not work. I don't think anything thats been said here is 'grossly exaggerated'. Such is the nature of human beings. They suck. It's just many of the ones in SL appear to suck more than average. And if I hadn't left SL already, I'd definitely leave if something like this ever came to fruition! And I'm very sure I wouldn't be alone in that. I'm not having other paying customers telling me how I can or can't live my second life. The only person I *might* take notice of is a Linden. If I think they may be in the right, of course
