From: Robin Harper You may have heard about the cornfield. Sometimes when someone is suspended for a short time they are sent to the cornfield. Building the cornfield didn't require any significant development work, but because it's close to the idea expressed in this proposal the proposal was accepted.
Unless this is an example of that desert dry Linden sense of humor there is some kind of place called the cornfield where suspended people get to go and presumably use IMs to stay in touch with with their cronies and transfer and accept inventory to and from their cronies. My feature suggestion is to eliminate the so called cornfield and cease any practice that makes a joke of being suspended. A voting proposition should follow tomorrow, it's too late tonight.

For those who don't know, or are too young to remember, the true origin of this phrase was spawned by a classic 1959 Twilight Zone episode “It’s a Good Life,” in which a 6-year-old Billy Mumy sent people to the cornfield, and other such mean atrocities for not doing exactly what this spoiled, supernatural child demanded.

Alternately, I propose moving all of Lazarus' signs to the cornfield and letting the problem sort itself out.

I guess I am not clear on why people "get to go" to the cornfield rather than "are banned to" the cornfield. I would imagine that beyond the second day the novelty fades pretty quickly.
I think it's a good solution that enables the Lindens to assign consequences to certain actions, yet allow the perpetrators to handle their mundane tasks so that business owners and customers aren't left hanging.
Yes, a business owner shouldn't be doing things that earn Linden wrath, but everyone has their moments.

I filed an abuse report lately about someone greeting new users at the welcome area with "Fuck you you goddamned faggots. You need to get your dicks out of each other's assholes".
I don't think this person needs to be able to conduct business during their suspension.

From: Ordinal Malaprop At least the spelling was correct. I try to run everything I post through a spell checker. That was a paraphrase, from memory, the original was done using multiple letters for each letter in the phrase, like FFFUUUCCCKKK, they took their time crafting their hate speech with care.

I don't think this person needs to be able to conduct business during their suspension. Maybe TCF is a minimum security banning facility. Either way, that doesn't sound like a fun way to greet people.

There is nothing wrong with this punishment. If I was stuck in a place with other people that messed up just like me I would not want to be there. Sure they would sit in there and talk some crap about the L's and try to make themselves look good but they are still in the cornfield. Maybe they could create another land called "GOOD FUN" and it's just a black room with a bunch of colored lighting Hello Kitty pictures all over the place and loud pulsing techno music in the background that never...never stops. You cannot trade, buy, sell, build, sit, throw, puke, scream, commit suicide, and definatly no push scripts You could even do something as so far as to put a button that slides all over the room, that says "Turn Music Off" but when you finally figure out the pattern it uses and you press it the music shall only get louder and faster and the button now in a new pattern EDIT: This "GOOD FUN" room would have it's own server! I could donate the box for it! 500Mhz Intel Celeron (before they put the L2 cache in them), 256Mb of RAM, 20Gb HD. Does this sound like POWER to you or what?

As far as I know the Cornfield sim is treated like a totally seperate grid, much like how Teen Second Life's grid is cut off from the main grid.

From what I understand, and from communicating with someone who was temp-banned there (he talked to me via an alt and through an outworld chat service), he could not communicate with the real-grid or with anyone. There was a loophole where you could post a classified ad, but that was it. Therefore, the cornfield does not allow what you think it does SuezanneC

Therefore, the cornfield does not allow what you think it does SuezanneC So you say, but I have no particular reason to trust people who can't behave well enough to keep from being sent there and use alts to defeat the intent of suspension. What is it that you reportedly can do there? It must be seen as preferable to true suspension. Whatever benefit it provides to suspended people I am opposed to them getting. If it provides no benefit to them then it is a waste of resources. People who are supposedly being punished for breaking the rules don't deserve to get any compensatory benefits.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville It must be seen as preferable to true suspension. I think it was someone's poor idea of a joke. Those Lindens sure can get wild and crazy at times. According to a penitent there (who still has forum privileges and has recently posted screen shots, but I can't tell you his name lest I get sent to the cornfield), there is literally nothing to do. So unlike a penitentiary, I imagine there ain't much chain-gang conspiring going on there. And as the Lindens have the right to listen in to any conversation anywhere at any time, I should hope that anyone daft enough to be exchanging exploits there would be burried in that field. What I'd like to see is if they could manage to keep James "Houdini" Miller constrained there. That would at least have entertainment value.

I hate the idea that the abuse reports I file on racists, homophobes, and religious bigots are treated lightly by making the rule breakers laugh. I also hate all forms of cutesy crap like pulsating progress bars and rounded corners on scollbar thumbs, and this defiinitely falls into that category.

What is the deal here? I don't understand what you are complaining about, saying that it's not a good form of "punishment". They cannot do anything there! You CANNOT trade, buy, sell, shop, fly, build, talk, or do anything interesting from what I know. It sucks to be in the cornfield just from hearing about it! Well, let's say that the Liden's listened to everything you said and a policy change is pending? Everybody is waiting on you!

In all fairness, tho, there are many kinds of Lindens doing many kinds of things. I don't think every Linden could possibly be devoting their Second Lives to a cornfield, or we'd have THE BEST DIGITAL MAIZE EVER! for dinner.

The sever used for the cornfield could instead be used to allow people to enter one at a time to run benchmarks tests, the limited access being a way of having some degree of standardization from test to test. The purpose would be to get text results from actual user equipment in the field to text the effects of different cache sizes, etc.
