Make the red lines a special case in the interest list, so you can only see them within one meter of the boundary. That way they don't blight your neighbor's properties.
And make them actually start one meter inside the boundary, so (a) they REALLY don't impact the neighbors, and (b) you can put stuff like a doorbell outside the lines.
Make them emit a cool "woot woot woot" red alert sound when you hit them, that everyone inside the boundary can hear, so they know when they're being protected.
If the landowner isn't in-world and there's nobody in the access list on the property, there's no reason to have an actual block up at all. Just auto-return anything dropped by anyone not on the access list while the bars are down. That way you still get your privacy, but people don't have to deal with red lines that aren't necessary.

I just ban the people I don't want on my land and people that leave random objects on my land as well. I hate seeing the red ban lines.

It also depends on how you deal with these roaming gangs of apartment greifers...
i never use the red bars, locks or anything and i have random ppl poping into my workshop all the time, i usually say hi take a moment to chatter and after a min or 2 they get bored with me staring @ a plywood box and move on. Now if i were to instantly get huffy with them "get out get out get out i dont want you to see my plywood box" i expect to be shot in my own house.
if one truley is a greifer you have let them win by letting them freak you out in the first place
ps course my workshop is a sky platform so if (and it hasnt happened since ive started) someone grates my cheese, i can just shove them off the edge lol

Land banning was ill-conceived since it was invented and LL doesn't care. It has turned the main grid into an unattractive collection of balkanized illusion-of-privacy-fiefdoms. Worse still those who insist on their "right to privacy" even when they aren't there have already installed "kick yo azz to the moon" home "security" systems which are far worse than the ban lines anyway.
The agressive home defense systems are technically against the rules, but that's one of them "kinder gentler rules" that - to my knowledge - has never been enforced.
Good fences don't make good neighbors; they are just irritating. Oh and there are no "good fences" in SL.

Few people put up land bands until they have a reason to. When jerks come onto your land and start shooting you, leave their trash on your property or blatently invade your privacy the land bans start popping up. A friend of mine never gave it a thought until a couple of avatars strolled into her house, while she was there no less and started giving her hell for the pictures on her walls(pics of furry avatars). She has had people shoot her off her land, drop self replicating prims to have her objects returned and all manor of griefing. Not because of her actions or what have you, just bored newbies looking for excitement. She now has tight security and land bans in place just so she can enjoy her land in peace.

If the red privacy lines are visible to all non-permitted users, then they should also be visible to the land owner and all that ARE permitted as well, but green instead. This way, they won't forget that the ban is on, AND they are just as visually afflicted as their neighbors so they will be less inclined to ban on a whim. This would be for the universal ban (with exceptions) only. If the plot is, by default, open but has some individuals banned, then the land owner and other permitted residents would see nothing.
I'm also in favor of the lines only appearing when you bump into them, fading after 10-20 seconds or so, as an alternate solution.

Re: I just ban the people I don't want on my land and people that leave random objects on my land as well.
My land's next to a sandbox, and I get random people walking on my land all the time. I rarely have a problem with people leaving stuff on my land... if I find it, I'll see if the owner's around, and return it if it seems to have been abandoned.
I've put out some vehicles (boats and inner tubes) so people can hang out and sail around: the inner tubes stay inside the lagoon, the boats you can sail anywhere in the sim and they return home 5 minutes after you leave them. The boats get used every day while I'm not there (I know, because they keep count of how often they're used).
Anyway, that's much more often than people leave stuff around. Is people leaving stuff around really enough of a problem that banning's necessary?

Balance

There is no, and never will be any true definitive "answer" to this problem, because Second Life is about "Life" and in Life there are no simple answerrs when it comes to the sum of all needs and desires of many people all at once.
The only real answer is balance... yin and yang, so to speak. The interests and needs of those for privacy, vs. the interests and need of those for unrestricted freedom must both be attended to. Those who want each must activly pursue and maintain them. Those who administer this place must realize ways to please both sides. If one side is given total favor, life on SL will be unpleasant.
This is why the USA and similar countries (Canada, Sweden, Singapore, etc.) have a lot of happy citizens.. they achieve some amount of balance.

How about texturable red bars?!?! So you could make them transparent if you wanted, or put up a nice picture or some ivy or something

These are just my general thoughts on the whole subject. First of all if everyone should have their "property" open for others to explore, why do we buy or rent land? Why don't we just automatically get deeded a piece when we join? I'd be cooler with unexpected guest if I didn't have to pay squat.
When I bought my first property, I spent a lot of time looking for something I liked. There were a few homes around....a couple annoying signs.....like many properties. Not a huge deal. As a newbie, I really had no clue. Within a week, I ended up with 2 monolithic houses bordering my property on both sides. One giant house has only a table and chair set, b/c they used all their prim space up and tried to buy my property for nothing. The other house isn't even a house, but a giant hollow rectagle. My other neighbor has some constant fire ball script-thingy running, which actually goes through my house. Another lovely view is comprised of Bush and rental signs. When I am there, these things (I don't know what - scripts - pathetic avs) are whistling, yelling, talking, and arbitrarily playing rap loudly.
It completely sucks. I had this open modern design. I didn't particularly care if people went on my land, as long as they didn't screw anything up. The view is so destroyed now. I can't even build on my land because I'm boxed in. I actually took everything apart and rebuilt something basic in the sky. Even then, the moron with the hollow house is still right next to me. I hardly go there now.
For my own sanity I've ended up renting a nice little Island home in Dreamland. I like it for the most part. I don't really care what my neighbors do. I'm not terribly fond of the red bars (I can see one house like that from mine). Personally, I was less thrilled with the brilliant person who landed on my property, shot me and then tried to hit on me. I actually had to leave my own land and teleport back to my other property.
I can understand why people want to have their own space, especially when they're paying for it. I think a way to keep people off your property and out of your home "invisibly" would be ideal. It would be nice to preserve the view, so I'm for anything like that.

Someone should invent "magic glass" for windows that will allow you to see through any building (and people and objects) that is too close to you and preserve your view. It should also be possible to block out sound that is on the other side of a wall.
