This 22 meg download goes faster than patching for any other game I play that actually uses the checker to only get updated files. So... where's the problem? Really?
(other games would include EverQuest, FinalFantasy XI, Worlds of Warcraft and in the past DAoC and Anarchy Online)

I wouldn't rationally be concerned with this UNLESS we had to upgrade SL every few days. What we're experiencing right now is an anomaly in the grand scheme of things. As in good science, a few spikes on the graph are not representative of the readout as a whole. Things average out over time, and while I do appreciate bandwidth efficiency, I'm usually doing something else when the new client downloads, anyway. Learning to multitask is challenging but rewarding!

From: Lex Neva 1. This requires resources (time, money) to implement, and it seems that LL currently has their hands tied.
this is a good point, but not true. there are complete patching systems and they could do autimatic patch generation. From: Lex Neva 2. Binary patching may not be as simple as you think. Have you ever tried it?
yes, I've tried and it's easy. From: Lex Neva 3. What about the problem that a user may have missed several updates?
it's simple. the binary patches are only available for the recent version. so if you have the latest version you can upgrade it to the newest. the old patches are archived so, the user can choose that she/he downloads the full client or two spearate patch. From: Lex Neva 4. Think of the support issues. Binary patching might well introduce extremely weird problems in cases where the patching system fails. It will happen, things like this always do. This will be a bigger support burden, and will probably lead to problems not easy to diagnose. The fix? Download the full version.
as I said it could be experimental in the beginning. but! the patching systems use checksum to check the status of the files before patching and after it. so the patching mechanism fails only if there is a big problem with the patch. maybe this can happen but in this case you can download the full version and upgrade as you did before (quick and working solution without asking support). From: Lex Neva That said, I vote LL consider trying this at some point in the future.
this topic is about Feature Suggestions so Lindens will do what they decided. I think this could be a good feature for quick upgrades.

Really? for big upgrades, yes it could be. but if the small files changed it should do this check fast and SL contains only small files (the biggest is newview.exe - 24MB, the cheksum generation for this file is about 3 seconds with MD5 mechanism).

From: Caran Suavage I don't play so often. that's the other problem why I don't want to wait till the new version is on my hard drive.
Try to imagine: you payed for something. you have an half hour to play, meet your friends and maybe go for an event. but you have to wait for the sf. you have to calculate with this every time when you sit before SL because you play rarely. i wouldnt pay for a game i can play only half an hour , everygame will ask you to update, and the fact is the 22megs of sl arent anything slower than all the other patching system, used by others games.

Caran-
We are currently not doing any form of patching scheme in order to reduce operational complexity; it's just one less thing that Ops has to worry about, the testers have to test, devs debug, Colin support, etc.
However, we are hiring developers and operations folks. Please feel free to apply.
