From: RobbyRacoon Olmstead I find that extremely difficult to believe. BTW, a year ago, 99.9% of SL residents would have found it difficult to believe, that land could be bought using something other than the SL viewer. You and I both know, how wrong they were, right? I can see it now. Search bot finds object set for 10 or 0 (my radios are a perfect example of this, by setting it to sell to your landlord to deed) compares price to the regular sales price, poof.... bot buys it. No warnings, private land, inside buildings, allow group or certain avatars only...they still lose. Soon we will see yard sales or websites selling objects aquired in this manner. Again, LL will no nothing.

Well if searchbots do start automatically buying stuff, excellent, can start selling plywood cubes that are described as chandeliers for $1000 each.

Well, I checked this out. Searching for me got only two hits - a bookcase that is for sale in one of my mall sites, and a lamp in my bedroom that was NOT supposed to be for sale.
I changed the status on the lamp, and opted out of the "service". The opting out took effect immediately. (I checked). Annoying, however, that I had to touch a scripted object in their sim to opt out. No way to do that from the web site.

Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

However, they may have programmed it to seek out key words, so I'd edit the name to read: "SexGen, Xcite-compatible, free-camping, money-tree chandelier."

API! and coverage update.
04-15-2007 22:00
From: SuezanneC Baskerville Searchbots are a kludgey method of acquiring this info. LL should give us the permission fields needed for fine grained web visibilty, make permitted data available on the web, provide an API, and give us the mozilla browser so we can use the sites that develop as a result right in the SL viewer. Hear, hear! On a side note, after a recent update, results seem to be appearing for most of you who mentioned not finding your items (Weedy Herbst, Mhaijik Guillaume, ...). Thanks for the thoughts, and let me know if you notice any issues. Regards, Christian -- Christian Prior Sheep Labs allears@sheeplabs.com

Great Job. Yes we another way to not connect with real avatars, and buy lousy products without going anywhere just send a bot to shop for you.

Again, LL will no nothing. I actually do see this happening as well. Temptation is there already. Basically the ability to steal from people things they have that are set for sale but they dont know it. Might be able to scam the scammers though. Put some fake named stuff for sale for a low low rate thats really just plywood cubes.

I really don't see what the fuss is about.
If you don't want to sell something, don't put it out for sale. It's as simple as that. If you do set something out for sale by mistake (and yes, mistakes can happen to the best of us), your stupidity is nobody's fault but our own.
Of course, this search engine doesn't just give others a way to find your on sale items, you get the same opportunity, to see if you have anything out for sale that shouldn't be. Instead of not knowing and running the risk of an item getting 'stolen' by an innocent passerby, you can actually check if you need to change the settings on any of your inworld items.
If you do want to sell something, I fail to see how another way for people to actually find your item is a bad thing. I myself am going to take some single items in my store out of their vendors to put up for sale on their own. That way I get free advertising, customers have an easier time finding what they are looking for (hopefully my dresses) and we all win.

Ok so after searching for myself all that came up were 2 items located on land that was sold over 6 months ago so yeah, highly inaccurate as one the land is gone and two I have many more items than 2 for sale.

Unintended consequences
04-24-2007 14:55
I saw the furor over the eSheep bot and decided to take a look. I typed in 'cabin' as I have several types of cabins I've created and sell. The results were: 1. Nearly useless, cluttered with noise entries 2. Confusing as I couldn't tell shops from private locations very well 3. Didn't include ANY of my cabins 4. Illustrated more than a few souls selling freebie cabins for $L in violation of the ToS The last bit is interesting indeed. I followed up with a few more simple searches, including 'house' and found more ToS violations. More than a few were selling freebie Linden products at marked up rates! A very interesting unintended consequence. So, two thoughts occur to me; first, is LL or anyone else going to pursue this new evidence of ToS violations? Second, if this is part of the $7 million invested in eSheep can someone please direct those folks my way because I can do better for lots less

Anyone who believes that opensource or sllib is a bad thing for SL, doesn't realize that most of the solutions to problems in SL lately have come from the open source community.
Do your homework before bashing opensrouce and all that it has to offer.

It'd be nice if there was a way that a person could get a list of the location of every object inworld that they own, regarless of it's sale status or whether it's on a private estate or what have you.
No more "Where the heck did that thing go?" worries.

The SL world needs a good object search tool, all right. What it does not need is THIS search tool. Alas.

From: Har Fairweather The SL world needs a good object search tool, all right. What it does not need is THIS search tool. Alas. I dont think it needs a object search tool It just needs the ability to search for more than one keyword at a time in the "search line" Like Meade's suggestion. They could increase the amount of text that could go in the "places" listing as well, that would help.

As long as they us it in its present form its not much of a threat it doesn't actualy list any of my items where they actually are in most cases err maybe a freebie or something, but when I Look my stuff up its in some place I never heard of so its pretty safe for now hehe

But if you use the landmark function, it will tp you to right in front of the object. Hope you're still safe after that; some people haven't been.

Anything I have clicked on including the stuff that probably still exists because it appears to be at least in a ballpark area isn't there (the ones that have it in the same sim but in some lot I have never heard of etc) I also like the engine if it were opt in first and not the other way around and if it was more accurate after being opt in. One thing is for sure if it was opt-in first the bot would be told where to cruise to and list those objects so the list would in fact be accurate. The way it is now I dont see the list ever actually being accurate or usable as a shopping tool the data is simply way too flawed and so outdated in most cases I have seen that its completely useless Right now its a badlly assembled toy that doesn't do a whole lot except maybe list a fwe items that "might" be there possibly or possibly not in a region close by somehwere.. I have tried my items and found none are in the correct location when I ported in. I tried a few items by others to end up porting into walls and windows etc it simply doesn't work right now lol.

Thanks for the report; you give us all a little hope here. Some people have lost valuable stuff to grifters, but you make it soound like it isn't even a particularly good search tool for them either. Some people suspect this is a Potemkin village sort of site, put up to impress one or more corporate prospects rather than actually do anything useful in-world. Your report lends support to that hypothesis.

Stunned!

Over the past few hours I have been a little more than irritated that people have been showing up in my stock room partly because its a mess. And I know that the search thing is what led them there.
So before I got angry I decided to search myself for it, and I found freebies that I sell for
ONE Linden being sold for $400 dollars
I found random items of mine being sold for a few dollars more than I sell them for, but this one avitar has multiple items of mine that are freebies that he sells pretty much as his own.
Yeah ill do the report and such but from this point forward I would suggest that people take a good look at items they buy and if 1 prim is made by the seller..... you may be buying a freebie
L$ 200 F (9 prim zen Garden) L$ 400 Baby Samurai home 25 prim
I made it, my price L$1 both items
He also claims that he can "heal" you through your avitar
Even though I do not like that people just pop right in at my little stock room, I will balance that with the ability of creators to report the heck out of fraudsters.
