What is a good used car?

Moving to NC I will have to start driving again. I haven't owned or driven a car in 10 years.

Does anyone have recommendations on a good make and model of used car?

Oh, and I prefer a manual transmission. I always put my foot through the floorboard when driving an automatic.

My last 3 cars have all been Camry's. Toyota makes a car that does its job, does it well, and does it for a very long time before breaking down. The ONLY money I've put into my Camry's has been oil, gas, and tires. I've never had a repair bill other than that.

They may look like boring dork cars, but that's because they ARE boring dork cars. If you want to get from here to there with the lowest "cost of ownership", then Toyota is the way to go.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I only drive American-made cars.

Any chance that Toyota has a factory here? :)

Well this is a question with many answers :)

Having been through a few over the years, I just bought a Volkswagen Polo - and it's built well and built to last, a nice solid, big car feel in a little 1.4 litre runabout package !

Edit : the US-only bit appeared after I posted lol

A friend of mine has one --very nice ride :) I like a smaller bike myself --but a Rocket III is great if you're used to a Big Ol' Harley.

Neehai,

I agree with Ace. I once owned a second-hand Toyota Camry, and it was the most reliable car I ever had. I only ever put in a little bit of oil and the petrol it needed, and had it for several years. When I sold it on, it had done over 150,000 miles, and still drove like new.

Good car.

Honda totally, you will run the paint off the car before it breaks down on you...I love both of mine and the four I've had (sold 'em all in good condition) previously.

A number of Honda's cars are also built in the US, btw.

We're a two-Honda family.

This is usually priority one. ;)

That having been said.... I'm a big fan of rice burners. Honda, (prelude if you can afford it.... civic is also good...) Acura, (basically a rebranded high end honda. The integra and legend were both good....) Toyota, (I love the mid 90's celicas. The more recent ones look like they're trying WAY the hell too hard to look like something out of an anime movie...) etc.

Fast, responsive, run forever. The sentra is another good one. Nissan makes a good product. ;)

There's your problem. 'American-made cars' and 'good used car' is an oxymoron. American cars have been getting better, but still cannot hold a candle to the reliability of the Japanese.

My suggestion: any Honda or Toyota product. They are first-tier Japanese models and they both have factories in the U.S.

You will not find a more reliable option that those two.
