What pisses you off about the forums and SL Poll

Lately I have faded from the government forums slowly eeking my way out of the General forums and the Off topic ones I have all but abandoned.

So here is my poll that is totaly anonymous.

What topics lately have gotten you to the same level of slowly fading from the forums from posting like you used to. You can actually check multiple options.

1.Anything about Government
(Defined as a world wide government that overrules all players or any subjective threads based on Government)

2.Anything about the Supposed FIC
(Defined as anything that points to a select group of people that supposedly have controlling power in SL)

3.Anything about People touting they are smarter than the rest of us.
(Clearly defined as those that have a down their nose attitude towards anyone else in SL and are blatantly ready to cram it down the rest of our throats whether we like it or not ...kind of like castor oil of old.)

4.Anything Trolls do
(defined as antics and subversive actions to derail threads)

5.Anything about Linden Lab
(defined as any thread bashing Linden Lab or actions LL takes such as example "closing forums before their time.";)

6.Anything about Bug Issues
(defined as just that anything about bugs –in game related electronic mishaps that create adversity)

7.Anything about Pie.

8.Anything about Griefers

9.Anything I say in General

10. Other
(you can define below if you wish or just leave it at other with no explanation)

To tell you the truth, it would be easier to ask what people actually like about these forums.
I just come in here on the off chance there's some actual news pertaining to SL, or that somebody has an interesting discussion about whatever.
It's all drama these days. I'm sick of it.

FIC promotes stereotyping which always upsets me because it is a easy way around getting to know your "enemy". I am guilty of stereotyping on occasion, but I always try to check myself when I realize it.

I hate an elitist attitude that has no room for rethinking an issue simply because they "know" they are right. Its hard to shake my impression of that individual once they have claimed to be superior. Its a double edged sword though, once I get the impression that they think they are better than me, I cant shake the fact I think I am better than them. And that quandry is what is upsetting.

Everything else on the list is easy to dismiss and doesnt bother me.

Just for Eggy, because he has a good point. I like to see new products posted here. I like to see people with problems get helped out. The community overall always amazes me how helpful and selfless it can be. I like to read about funny stuff in SL that is fun for all involved.

I agree, I think we come to the forums for various reasons. Initially I came to the forums because SL was down and I wanted to find out what was going on. When I saw the scripting/building/textures forums I began reading them and posting in them.

Then I saw the General Forum and what amounted to Off Topic before things were rearranged and really enjoyed the friendly banter and humor. I sort of got hooked because I can't log into SL from work and the forums gave me insight on what was happening from a people perspective that I did not get in world. I also met some of the posters in world, which made SL a friendlier place for me overall.

I think that no matter how much something is censored or how many "ignore" tools one has, there will always be differences in opinion and in various ways of expressing those opinions. Some people are emotional about government, others religion, everyone has hot points.

People have hurt my feelings in the forums and a few times they have pushed their point across with what I have considered a personal attack. OTOH, people have also expressed opinions and posted information that I have learned from. In some cases, it has changed my opinion about something because they posted information that I was unaware of.

There have been a few days where I logged in when it was a really "down" day for me and the humor and banter or even the ability to post my dilema made it better.

I would hate to see that part of the forums cease.

Rose, I’m not out to kill the forum.
I remember days of old when we were able to discuss things with civil overtures.
I like you only get to log in the forums at work.
When I am at home online I am in world working or playing or whatever.
However, the fun, of the old days, of the forums is gone.

However for that matter, for me, the fun of SL is waning as well.
All of the things above have correlated to several things that I haven’t posted on the poll such as constant log in issues. Texture problems. Item theft due to copy scripts and those that think its funny to subvert a creator’s hard work. So many things I could list that are upsetting or have grown to a point of being moot as none have been listened to nor taken care of.

You know everyone bitches and cries about Prok and Blaze.
But you know what sometimes under those arrogant smarter than everyone else attitudes are some decent realizations.
Problem is some of us can’t over come the attitudes to see the Ideas.

Lately I have been observing and well trolling for shits n giggles at times.

But the whole thing boils down to this.
There are a lot of problems and a lot of mish-mashed attitudes that clash on a regular base.

If everyone would take a step back and look at what’s pissing them off, so to speak, then maybe we can all regroup and readdress things with open minds.

I used to have an open mind.
I used to not be so cynical.
I used to be one of the biggest advocates of LL that anyone could know.
I used to have fun in SL.

But lately I have learned one thing and that’s why I am re-looking things.
That thing is what is the point of fighting for the same Ideas if you’re going to belittle it over semantics.
Culling an Idea due to an attitude is just as bad as having a bad Idea with a great personality.
Just like RL some really stupid Ideas move forward due to a charismatic character.

So, hence why I posted this thread to see what really pisses people off.
Who knows by pointing out things that are really upsetting may lead to a different venue of thinking.

I hope this thread continues on as a civil discussion but I fear that after this thread it will probably degenerate to being closed by Jeska.

Shadow.

Not much pisses me off here Shadow - I do find it annoying how many people speak for others making statements like, "Well what Shadow means by this poll...", or "What Merwan is trying to say..." etc. etc.

I also find it annoying how few people have taken the time to learn the history of SL, to educate themselves in the development of our culture(s), and have so little respect for the HUGE investment of so many people which has empowered others to thrive, grow and prosper.

I'm encouraged that in the past couple days there has been a lot of threads reflecting on forum-dynamics - which is a good thing.

Finally, I feel the forums need more humor. Let the monkeys laugh!

:D :D :D :D :D  :D :D

That's a good point. I feel bad for residents (or Lindens)-who've devoted their time to make helpful or inspiring contributions to the SL world- only to log into the forums and find them clogged with angry, hostile and whiny posts.

I chose other, because the only thing that really bothers me and I wouldn't say pisses me off is post that are more than several paragraphs long. I just don't understand why some people can't just prove their point within a few paragraphs. Anyways, I just skim over them and move along as a solution.

What one person sees as helpful and another sees as detrimental is often interesting.

Nothing really pisses me off. I don't take things here seriously enough for that. Some things are more amusing than others, though. Picturing how incredibly angry some notorious posters must feel as they hammer out their hourly 10 page diatribes is probably what I find most amusing.

Correction... It was amusing, then is was kind of sad, then it was downright pathetic, then it zinged off into tinfoil-hat land, and now it's just stale.

Can you briefly elaborate?
The reason I ask is I cannot see where helpful or detrimental has been oulined or even discussed in this poll.

The poll is about what pisses people off if they chose to elaborate here on specific topics they are given the freedom to do so.

But skimming the replys Im not sure how this statement relates and I am asking for a better definition or example for clarity.

I voted other. The only thing that pisses me off is when people are arrogant to the point that they hurt others even when their rally cry is that they are trying to help others.

I don't like people who try to get to the top by hurting others. There *are* other ways to get there.

Hell, people like me and I don't do squat. :p

Actually, I'd like to toss in a comment on the long post thing. Im a story teller, from a family of story tellers. Everything has a beginning, a middle, an end ... and frequently history as well. Conversations at home can be very long, drawn out affairs. :)

I find it very difficult to get to the point ... and I work very hard at it. I like words, I like using them, and I like painting pictures with them. Wordcraft gives me joy. Telling a story satisfies the part of me that wants to make sure Im understood. Not just that someone hears what they thought I was saying, but what I actually said, complete with subtext and coloration and tone. Have you stopped reading yet?

Anyway, its troubling that so many people disparage long posts, simply because they don't want to take the time to read them, because they want to have the point summarized in a few words. It saddens me that it seems people value words so little as to disparage someone who takes the time to use a lot of them.

BTW, its not just a problem in this particular place; it happens all over, including at work. :)

OK .. returning the borrowed thread now :)

One thing that really gets me riled is when someone who thinks they know better than everyone else starts a thread, and informs the rest of us stupid people how we must do something or other... or we must stop doing something or other... or we must do something a certain way or we are worthless people.

Even if the person has a well thought out point, and heck, even if they actually do know better... the sheer arrogance shown by their assumption that it is not only their right, but their duty to tell everyone else what they must do with their time and inworld efforts just pisses me off no end.

When I see posts like those, my first reaction is "I must kick you in the ass, you arrogant SOB... you don't get to tell me what to do." They could be right... they could be wrong... but whatever their message might have been will always take a back seat to their arrogant delivery.

I have a very short forum attention span. I've tried reading some of the long, epic posts that crop up from time to time *grins*, but, honestly, by the end of the second paragraph I've lost the will to live. And this is coming from someone that reads books voraciously - I have most of a room devoted to novels.

It's not just that I disagree with whatever is being said, even the most amiable of long posts just cause my brain to disengage - it took me three attempts to read yours, and even then I skipped to the end and read backwards :p Maybe I'm just strange :D

Anyway, to answer the original question... I suppose what annoys me the most, and keeps me from posting, is the level of intolerance that is shown. The amount of hate and vitrol that gets spewed here doesn't make for an inviting atmosphere, and so I stay away. Mostly. It's like a car-crash.. you can't help but peek at the carnage.

eep. Three paragraphs. I shall burn in hell for this ;)

[edit] oh yeah... and *no-one* tells me how I should play SL but me. [/edit]

I voted other. What bugs me is that it's the same topics, same people. Day in and day out.
After a year in SL and reading the forums. Todays forum dosn't look much different than last years forum.

There are two types of people who use the forums that piss me off as well. The diedhard and the butt kisser. The die hard thinks SL is a utopia. Everything perfect. Anyone daring to point out any flaws in the system will be shouted down by the diehard to silence the dissenter.
The butt kisser thinks Phil Linden is god incarnate and like the pope infalliable. The butt kisser will often include other lindens in this opinion. Often heaping loads of praise on the lindens for the most small and obscure reasons. Like our friend the diehard will shout down any dissenters that point out any flaws the lindens may have.

The die hard and butt kisser have been known to team up to drive any and all dissenters from the forums. They will use any and all meathods at thier means. Regardless of the feelings of others.

For such a Negative intonation at the begining on my behalf this is turning out to be one of the most postive threads I have seen lately.

To those that have posted thank you, especially those I havent seen post in a long while. Although my initial format was negative, the words several of you have written has been making me reevaluate my presentation of how I do things.

So again thank you.

For those that post in the future to this thread looking forward to your responses.

Shadow.
