Just a question, I love my hoochie hair, but I typically wear a longish black hair attachment and would never wear a thousand prim ringlets. Does this mean you all hate me?

Well... it all depends on how your hair is constructed. If there are "lots" of curved surfaces (spheres, cylinders, torii, rings), then face it; you will be impacting those that are looking at your AV.

However, I'm not sure "hate" would be the operative word if you were to continue wearing these attachments if you knew they could cause a problem. "Frustrated" might be a better term.

If you're concerned enough, just have a friend compare their FPS somewhere with you coming in and out of view. If there's a noticable difference, then realize that you're causing a similar noticable difference for everyone else that ever sees your AV.

Very helpful. I myself have not noticed a marked difference in lag when I wear my hair. I also make a conscious effort to not wear hair that is too elaborate. I shall try that experiment.

How/Where can you get a FPS reading?

Thanks!

View/Statistics Bar from the pull-down menus... or ALT-1 shortcut key. FPS is right at the top of the display.

Tonight at the Edge, I witnessed something that I was so moved by, I had to take a picture lol. A stripper dancing on a pole, but the avatar would not render - so all you could see was the hair attachment moving up and down the pole. It was bewitching. See attached.

How much is too much?

I love my hair attachments - I have bangs I color blue which consist of 3 small tubes on each side, textured to give it that wispy look.

I also have those little anime pigtails - each one is a doughnut like ball with three pointy wisps (tapered cylanders, I think) poking out of each one.

My glasses are just a single textured cube, so I'm not stressing those.

What's the line that seperates lag-conscience style from all out lagorama?

Do the FPS test mentioned a couple posts above your's, and act acordingly (sheesh.)

I like to look at the stats bar when I am getting lag. Last night while in SimQuest i had 5.3 fps, so i brought the bar up to see what the sim was doing. The sim was running at 45 fps, Sim Quest routinely runs around 6000 to 7000 fps (imagine the hit a desk top's video card takes.) There happened to be one of these hootchie hair wearing mamas there, and she was wearing a ball gown littered with fancey twisty thingies. I thought about mentioning it to her. I figured the potential fight wasn't in my best intrest at the time. I instead just TPed home to work on a particle script that has the effect I want, but doesn't drop my frame rate when its running. <Not more then a couple dec. points anyway.>

I think i made a big mistake by not saying anything to her, public edecation is the best weapon we have in fighting the battle against lag, and low frame rates.

Client FPS can go down if there are too many vertices to render.

One way to reduce the number of vertices your client needs to render is to go into Preferences->Options. There is this slider labelled "Object Detail". Slide it all the way over to the left.

I do this when there are too many curved object for my client to handle. :)

I would like to add that cubes are not 12 triangles. While they could be 12 triangles in theory, in SL they have a lot more than that at the default LOD settings. Put 2 cubes into Z-flashing and you'll see all the tiny individual polygons...

PHOTOSHOP causes lag??!!!!

MAJOR lag.

All Adobe products cause lag. Well, the CS versions, anyway.

I run a fairly decked-out G4 at work. I switch the machine on, get some other stuff cranked up, start the CE Suite loading...and head for coffee.

And on unload, Photoshop's actually not bad, but Illustrator CS takes longer to shut down than good old Quark takes to crank up.

Oh...you meant SL lag... :p
