Proxy would be fine and I certainly can't see a problem with it. But if LL's goal is to jack the prices up as high as possible, extending the time would probably do that more. I think that "ok, maybe five more will do it..." effect would generate more spur-of-the-moment quick decisions to raise what someone will pay. It appeals more to people that like to make spontaneous buying decisions (even if it's a bad habit).
Not that I think they should try to get as high a price as possible (although I wouldn't blame them for it), I don't really care one way or the other between the two. Proxy eliminates the main problem I have with the current system just as well and honestly, if I could pick between the two, I'd probably pick proxy style.

Proxy couldn't hurt anything, so might as well add it too. Another vote for proxy

Thank you for explaining that Maxx! Ok. So now after all I have read thus far, I am currently changing my opinion from sealed bids to proxy bids as the best way to go I think. Of course, I still think there could be some uses for sealed bids, but I haven't yet thought of where they would be handy. Great discussion here.

Sealed bids would be handy for items that you KNOW will get high in price as we do now, such as sims. Sure other bids could unexpectedly get high... hmm... so maybe if the bids reach a certain value have them become sealed? Like lets say a bidding gets up to 700 USD, then it becomes sealed and everyone gets to see, well the last bid was 700 so I'll go up to this, etc. and maybe the ones who bid on or around the 700 mark get to see the rest of the bid but no one else does? Brain storming again.

I don't know, I'd be more inclined to seal the lower priced stuff, but I can't give a concrete reason why (yet).

Hmm, maybe so that lower priced stuff doesn't become extremely higher priced stuff?
For example a small plot of land goes for like 1k USD?
Only reason I can think why a sealed auction would be good for lower priced things.
