Hey! My Alienware ALX Aurora is finally here and set up! However, I see getting a top-of-the-line brand new computer does NOT improve my SL experience. I am now crashing more often than I did with my old one. So, don't expect to see me in SL anytime soon.

It's the latest patch Devlin.
I am crashing more then ever since yesterday's "upgrade".
SL is almost unplayable ATM.

Congratulations on the new computer Devlin!! :D

And don't think it is you right off. They are working on an upgrade right now because a lot of people are having crashes. Even those who don't normally! :)

Have you tried the new SL update the Lindens put up today on the preview grid Devlin? It might do the trick for you...

Alienware... me jealous!

NeuralClone had the same experience. He recently bought a Dell XPS (similar specs to some of the Alienware systems). He's noticed marked improvement over his prior computer in almost every area, except SL runs slower. Weird.

Are you saying the forums aren't proper?
Well, we have Jeska working on that, and once she's consigned all the riff-raff to the off-topic area, we can work on the spelling and grammar of those who remain. Perhaps this forum can become Proper once more.

Alienware business model... buy computer, paint it green, resell at twice the price.
I would never buy or recommend an alienware computer if only because I can build a better PC for half the price.
You should have used that money to get yourself laid :P

My alienware runs great, and looks perty, and I got it cheap because of Best Buy screwing up :D

Anyway... Devlin, what kind of Graphics Card does your new computer have?

Aside from the SL bugs mentioned above, WinXP SP2 (which I imagine is what OEMs are loading today) does something funny with memory accesses which slow them markedly. The default software firewall may also be reducing network performance.

Friends don't let friends install SP2.

Now as how to get it out?

May I suggest Windows 98SE? Not only does it not have whatever feature is causing memory access to slow down, it also doesn't have the security holes of Windows XP.

My Alienware Area-51m laptop beats the specs of all the PCs at my office, and kicks arse. It runs Doom 3 beautifully. People who badmouth Alienware are just jealous ;) Combined with my wireless broadband, I can access SL anywhere :D

Eggy,

I'm presently unaware of ANY computer that has dual GPU's like Alienware is now doing. Can you really build this? If so, we should talk.

Dual GPUs, like a pair of GeForce 6800 PCI express cards in SLI mode? Its doable by anyone who can afford to blow a grand on video cards. Alienware doesn't have a monopoly on that.

Moral of the story. If properly installing, properly operating and properly securing a PC would be as simple as the marketeers would like you to believe, many of us would be out of a job!

Marketing and Sales are IT's worse enemies! They 'stretch the truth', we have to make it work.

Devlin,

Yes we fixed a big crash bug that was in 1.5.8 and 1.5.9 with 1.5.10. Try it and let me know if you are still crashing.

Show me where to get the motherboard that supports dual GPU's other than from Alienware.

I really want to know. I use a Quadro FX 3000 graphics card. It's an incredible piece of equipment for 3D modeling applications, but it's not as fast for gaming as consumer end video cards are. I'd love to be able to run both on one machine.

IIRC, Alienware is the only company that makes a two-graphic-card system right now, but in a month or so, there'll be about a dozen companies making dual-card mainboards.

Edit: Dual-GPU means a matched pair of cards, each rendering half the scene. Putting a second video card in and using each to drive one monitor is old hat.
