There was a recent incident which leads me to believe we are better off with land being public land rather then becoming LL land when released.

/120/1c/28039/1.html

I rather see land scanners and players profiting, then watch LL sieze land and not give it back to the owner apon request. If that is the case then I would rather the players make the profit and have the potential to return the land to its rightful owner. LL is obviously unwilling to do so. This would also reduce the burden on LL from having to return the land to auction.

Or at least move the darn button to a more appropriate place.

please post your support here thanks!

Personally, I am not in favor of land going back to the public. Both situations have there own problems.

To me the best solution is to implement a button/warning that asks if you are sure you want to release your land. Perhaps even have it include exactly what will happen if you do what you are about to do (this could fall under many warning type situations). If the warning is not clicked "ok" in a certain amount of time, it defaults to no.

That to me is the easiest solution. Not fail safe, but at least it rules out things like crashing, accidently hitting the release button, and an unsure state of the consequences of your "about to be performed" actions.

The option to be able to reclaim your released land for up to at least an hour afterwards would also help I think. :)

No.

No way in hell, as a matter of fact.

Public land under the current system is bad with a capital B.

The fact that the to-auction system has problems has been known since before the system was ever implimented. We've told LL as much, and they dont react. But that doesn't mean we don't still have a better system.

Consider that under the public land system, Trin would have very likely lost the land to a random land baron before it could be reclaimed anyhow, and with that there would be no hope of a happy resolution.

there already is a warning, which seems to be failing. the button is just in the wrong place. If it were moved it would likely reduce the amount of incidents.

the reason for starting this post has been solved, LL finally took down the auction. I am just for a working system like everyone else. I don't like to see player ignored when the company says somewhere something contrary. for now its about solved I think

How does that work exactly? I bought a 512m plot of public land on Saturday. How was it public?

I could be wrong about this, but I do believe only plots of a certain size go back into the auction pool.

I would not like a return to the previous public land system. In that system, a dead account's land automatically went public. When land scanners became prolific it ended up that only those with land scanners were likely to benefit from public land.

Now we can choose to release land to public if we want to and dead account's land goes to auction if it's >256m2 so that more people have an opportunity to get it if they've had their eye on it.

The "accidental release" is a situation that we could use some help from the Lindens on.

A better solution would be a sort of "land purgatory," where the released land could be autoset to be bought back only by the releaser for a short period of time. After that limbo period, if the released land was not reclaimed, it could proceed on to it's new life as public land.

*see next post.

I believe if someone releases land it goes public, no matter the size.

And if an account becomes inactive, or there is a pending land sale/transfer that is not completed, all land 256 m2 or larger goes to auction. I believe the <256 m2 goes public.

Nah, I dont like the way things are, or any of the other methods suggested as replacement thus far.

Unless you are a land scanner or a land baron yourself I fail to understand why you think it would be preferable for them to profit. If you think land barons would return the land to its rightful owner, you must be living in cloud cuckoo land. Have you seen them doing such a thing in the past because I haven't.

At least if it goes back to LL, there is a fair chance that the land will be rightly returned, albeit after some negotiation. Personally I feel they should not put the land directly to auction without ascertaining that the owner intended to release the land in the first place.

I am sorry but I disagree with all your points.

Having been the one that this happened to, I'd like to say that there can be a compromise. They could've waited a little bit before throwing my land directly up on the auction block. I realized it had reverted back to Linden Labs on Friday night. Sent my e-mail to them directly and bye start of business this morning it was already on the auction block. At least give 3 business days, would be my suggestion.

If my land had gone public someone that knows me may have been nice enough to buy it and then sell it back to me but what if it was someone like the person that taunted me on my other thread that purchased it and wouldn't return it to me even after the mistake was explained?

There has got to be a happy medium here. I hope one is found.

Regards,

Trinity

How about a SEPARATE TAB for "Land Maintenance" with the release button and for sale buttons there? Force the user to select WHO to sell to (with "anyone" as an option) BEFORE they can check the box "for sale" and enter a price.

Also, to enter this tab, require the user's password to be entered. This will make it clear JUST how important functions under this tab on ABOUT LAND would be.

Regards,

-Flip

If we go back to supporting Public Land, at least name it what it is. Call the button "Release to Land Barons". At least that's truthful! :p

As for the concept of Public Land, that only works if there is more land than everyone in SL could possibly afford to own. If there are enough people to buy and own all Public Land, it's been proven that with Public land it doesn't stick around very long (i.e. public land scanners). The Public Land concept doesn't exist anymore as there is never any public land around for people to buy. It's always snatched up and marked up in price by the land barons. It was a good idea in the day, but it doesn't make sense anymore unless the Lindens double or quadruple the current world size.
