Ummm yes Andrew! lol

In all seriousness these are wonderful ideas! I am a lazy developer too that's why it's all HTML instead of PHP lol However your ideas for automation are fantastic! I don't know anything about XML-RPC in SL, so a lot of learning I have been puttin off will be required to make this happen. However it is definitely where we want to go!

In regards to the "Find Places" point, to be honest I had never really thought of it that way. Though you are correct it is very much like a new category, however I have found it used much more than the FIND menu because it is web browsable. All of my in-world attempts with this have failed comparatively (However Andrew if you haven't seen the map, you should. It's crazy!).

Your fourth point is really interesting as it would allow direct access of current in-game information. Though I would be afraid of hacker attacks and such, which is also why I wouldn't make our website a WIKI. I love them, but too many "chiefs" can cause trouble. Not everyone completely understands the Recreational Activities just yet, as an example. The way it is currently I have direct contact with the three people who make updates to the site. This provides ultimate control, though scalability may become an issue as you have said. However, our in-world group of helpers also continues to grow, so I hope that we can counteract it some.

Ultimately I think everyone would prefer it to be as SL-friendly as possible. Your final comments are wonderful "blue-sky" comments, and I of course would love it! I do wonder however if there isn't a way to help us out right now. For example, on the SL website there are hyperlinks that take you to in-world locations. So I have 2 questions for you then Andrew, if I may ;)

1) I don't suppose you'd be willing to give a lesson in XML-RPC? =D
2) Is the HYPERLINK technology one that could be shared in some way, so that the SLPRS could utilize it for the website?

Yes, this is very easy to do.

<a href="secondlife://isere/150/250/">Isere (150, 250)</a>

produces:

Isere (150, 250)

If Second Life isn't running, this link will launch Second Life and bring you in-world at the telehub closest to the location, and give a map beacon.

If it is running, this will produce a map beacon at the location.

Yeah Lisse, way to go... it's such a handy feature... I have to learn to do it more often myself. I wish there was a way a list of landmarks could be exported into a text or HTML list... that would be handydandy. I am also in favor of macroautomation to make things more efficient and run smoothly.

Interoperability, integration... it's cool to hear you mention this, Andrew. Very visionary.

Higbee, keep up the fine work. :)

Ok folks I have done further experiements with this...

Apparently there is a bug which I am reporting as well. When you use one of these links with SecondLife turned off, they work correctly; i.e. SL turns on, you log in at the closest telehub with the map up and the location mapped (sometimes you get an error message even though it worked). However if you are already using SecondLife, these links do not work at all; i.e. no REGION is passed to SL, so no location is mapped and no teleport occurs. Real bummer because it makes these links pretty much useless at the moment :(

Perhaps there is a simple HTML-side fix to this?

Feel free to test it yourself if you like =)

SLPRSR Update 120604!!!
12-05-2004 21:06
Hello hello my friends!

We got another registry update for ya! The webste has also added several images and caretakers =) We moved the release notes for the site to their own page so they can stay available to you all if needed. It looks like it's going to be end of January before the maps and the rest of the upgrades are ready as this is a very busy time for all of us RL. We will probably have another update before the end of the year though. We wish you all well and happy holidays =D

Be sure to check out the updates on our website!

***EDIT:

We will have the new kiosks out by tomorrow =)

BIG SL Parks & Rec Update! 12/18/04

WOOHOO! We had a huge update for the website! We've got ALL of the pix up and we've added the new "MAP IT!" feature which connects you directly to our virtual world thanks to bug fixes in 1.5.9 =) We've also done a couple of other small things here and there, so be sure to check out the release notes for all the details.

This will be the last update for the year 2004, but we hope to have the interactive map running by late January! The new year will bring better interaction with the website for registrants as well! As per Andrew's suggestions we will be making a php interface for registrants to post their own images and information! Busy time right now so it's hard to set a release date on those tools, but I'll keep you posted =D

STILL IMPORTANT!
We are always looking for people to host SLPRSR kiosks =) Only 2 prims, has floating text above it with our URL and a brief description, and gives two simple notecards that don't include pictures or landmarks. So the lag is nil. Just contact me in-world if you are interested =)
