Over the last few days, I have begun to accumulate a list of songs whose lyrics and overall vibe make me think of Second Life in some way -- or even feel about it emotionally, as best I can anyway. I would like to share a few of my favorites, and if you have some too, please do post, as this is the thread to do it! And also, please tell why these songs have meaning to you. Here are some of my faves: Vanessa Carlton - White HousesFrom: someone Crashed on the floor when I moved in This little bunk alone with some strange new friends Stay up too late, and I'm too thin We promise each other it's til the end The rest of the lyrics get a little too specific, but this is Carlton's new single. Funnily enough, I heard it inworld while flying past someone's house, and it was hella catchy so I decided to check it out in greater detail (including the dancy music video). I relate to this song because I am still quite new (or "fresh" if you want an 80s term) to SL, and this makes me think of the social, domestic aspects of the experience. The "Stay up too late..." line is obvious. Kraftwerk - Computer World / The ModelFrom: someone Time, travel, communication, entertainment Computer World Kraftwerk are synonymous with techno music, and are vanguards of the "man-machine" fusion. "Computer World" is a bouncy, catchy ditty with few lyrics which mean a lot. When you consider this was written at the beginning of the 80s, prophecying an increasingly interconnected global village in the years to come, it means even more. From: someone She's a model and she's looking good I'd like to take her home that's understood She plays hard to get, she smiles from time to time It only takes a camera to change her mind "The Model" is another well-known composition of Kraftwerk's. This one reminds me of the New World Notes Fashion Expo '04, which was just a few days ago. Of course, there are connections all over the place: if you were there, you will recall Hamlet's shout-out at the end, referencing Mike Myers on Sprockets of SNL. Myers, as Dieter, in fact dances to Kraftwerk on the skit. More info here: http://kraftwerk.hu/faq/miscellaneous.htmlTara MacLean - If I FallFrom: someone It seems so far to go It took so long to get here Now I'm saying things I swore I'd never say and I'm afraid again
I thought I had it in me I used to be so sure There I was stronger than ever And here I am blaming the hurt This doesn't really apply to me personally (yet, anyway) but the melody and song is really emotionally arranged. I chose this because a few years ago, my brother did an animation reel in which there was a zooming through the landscape and then through space, and he used this tune as the soundtrack. I feel this way when I fly through SL. The "It took so long to get here" is certainly literal, though =) <--- Kex smile Jan Hammer - Beyond The Mind's Eye Thomas Dolby - The Gate To The Mind's EyeI don't have specific lyrics I'm referencing, but these were like precursors of the fantastic aspect of Second Life. These are two complete soundtracks for corresponding exploratory videos with amazing computer imagery -- amazing for the early 90s, anyway. If you've ever seen them, you know what I mean. Fundamentally, the camera takes a journey through some very imaginative, surreal places, such as through a technology-endowed pyramid, giant transforming mechas (yes, Transformers ), and the birth of a new planet. There's big cyberpunk influence but it's diverse and stretches out way past the dystopic trappings and features hilarious moments like a family of eyeballs dancing and a journey through an art gallery where the paintings come to life. Here are a few screenshots: http://lib1.store.vip.sc5.yahoo.com/lib/odyssey3d/Beyond.jpgNowadays, we take things like Toy Story and Shrek for granted, but this really "pushed the limits" back then. Kind of rare and hard to find now.

Joyful Girl Ani Difranco (Dilate) i do it for the joy it brings because i'm a joyful girl because the world owes me nothing and we owe each other the world i do it because it's the least i can do i do it because i learned it from you i do it just because i want to because I want to everything i do is judged and they mostly get it wrong but oh well 'cuz the bathroom mirror has not budged and the woman who lives there can tell the truth from the stuff that they say and she looks me in the eye and says would you prefer the easy way? no, well o.k. then don't cry and i wonder if everything i do i do instead of something i want to do more the question fills my head i know that there's no grand plan here this is just the way it goes and when everything else seems unclear i guess at least i know i do it for the joy it brings... Great thread!!

Beatles's Lyrics - Yellow Submarine Lyrics In the town where I was born Lived a man who sailed to sea And he told us of his life In the land of submarines So we sailed up to the sun Till we found the sea of green And we lived beneath the waves In our yellow submarine We all live in our yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine We all live in our yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine And our friends are all on board Many more of them live next door And the band begins to play We all live in our yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine We all live in our yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine As we live a life of ease Everyone of us has all we need Sky of blue and sea of green In our yellow submarine. We all live in our yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine We all live in our yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine We all live in our yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine We all live in our yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

A lot of the "Dancer" types in SL always make me think of the Aqua Song "Barbie Girl." From: someone I'm a blonde single girl in the fantasy world Dress me up, take your time, I'm your dollie You're my doll, rock and roll, feel the glamour and pain Kiss me here, touch me there, hanky-panky . . . Make me walk, make me talk, do whatever you please I can act like a star, I can beg on my knees Come jump in, be my friend, let us do it again Hit the town, fool around, let's go party Not sure I have one for SL overall though, maybe Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric" just for the line: From: someone You know I hate to ask But are 'friends' electric?

SUBLIME LYRICS
"STP"
All that I need, look at all the love we've found. I won't run and pull the one jack move they love her for the kingston sound.
Flava-Flave and I-C-E once said something that made me want to burn my liquor store down to the ground. But I just can't leave the pad, cuz I'll surely wind up dead, 'cuz i know there out there out there waiting and watching for me. Still I got my yellow cat and my wooden baseball bat and my shiny silver gat and if my homey my back then I got
All that I need, look at all the love we've found. I won't run and pull the one jack move they love her for the kingston sound.
I won't slip, and I won't trip. Send Matt Vargas to regrip. While I'm wrenchin' on my ride, in that secret pad where we hide, there's always lotsa fun stuff to do, like relax and design a brand new tattoo. Play with my cross-word puzzle book, I'm even learning how to cook.
Have you seen that little whore betty, Someone said she stole my freddie. And if she made off with my last clean ring, I'm gonna kill that fuckin' ditch pig. So what? Outta my, outta my, outta my, outta my secret pad, cuz I know your talkin' about me baby, makin' it hard to live. Cause I, don't want no money dick, don't want no money down. My secret tweaker pad is now the hottest pale spot in town I guess. Take it nice and easy. Don't want no sheriff breakin' down the door to raid me.
All that I need, look at all the love we've found. I won't run and pull the one jack move, they love her for the kingston sound.
Baby you wanna give me kisses sweet, only for one night with no repeat. Baby you wanna leave and never go, but the taste of honey is worse than none at all.

These hand tainted skys, These computer generated birds The neon language of this age The artiface of words. We're kind of like a hologram Walking through the walking damned Taking our cues from a cold screen. Watching the blue go to red coming up in bright green.
-----------------------
They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot. With a pink hotel, a boutique, and swinging hot spot. Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you've got till it's gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot. ------------------------

Oingo Boingo
Who Do You Want To Be Today
CHORUS Who do you want to be today? Who do you want to be? Who do you want to be today? Do you want to be just like someone on T.V.?
Oh boredom is so terrible, it's like a dread disease Nothing could be worse than when there's nothing on T.V. I'd rather be a cowboy than to stare blank at the walls I've been reborn so many times I can't remember them all (And I say)
CHORUS
Just like someone on T.V.!
I think I'll be a teddy boy, I think I'll be a hunk I think I'll be a tough guy and I think I'll be a punk I might just be a fashion star All dressed in frilly rags Or perhaps I'll cross the other side and walk around in Drag!
CHORUS
Just like somebody on T.V.!
Do you like to be just like a rock in the middle of the sea Do you want to suffer by yourself in a pool of blissful misery Do you want to feel like a saint in artists' clothes With a rosary in your hand Do you wanna be crazy like Van Gogh like a stranger in a Strange, strange land
Would you rather push the buttons And be feared by all humanity Or perhaps you'd like to be a bum Do you wanna be stupid, just like me
CHORUS
Just like somebody on T.V.! Who do you want to be . . . . . .

We Can Fly!
10-11-2004 06:02
Up Up And Away by Jimmy Webb
Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon? Would you like to glide in my beautiful balloon? We could flat among the stars together, you and I.
For we can fly. We can fly! Up, up and away, my beautiful, my beautiful balloon!
The world's a nicer place in my beautiful balloon. It wears a nicer face in my beautiful balloon. We can sing a song and sail along the silver sky,
For we can fly. We can fly! Up, up and away, my beautiful, my beautiful balloon!
Suspended under a twilight canopy We'll search the clouds for a star to guide us. If by some chance you find yourself loving me, We'll find a cloud to hide us, keep the moon beside us.
Love is waiting there in my beautiful ballon. Way up in the air in my beautiful balloon. If you'll hold my hand, we'll chase your dream across the sky,
For we can fly. We can fly! Up, up and away, my beautiful, my beautiful balloon!

SL often makes me think of Talking Heads songs. Even after almost a year and a half, SL still has that pleasantly edgy surreality for me that I felt the first time I visited. Here's a song by Talking Heads that is typically evocative of that same mood:
AND SHE WAS - Talking Heads
And she was lying in the grass And she could hear the highway breathing And she could see a nearby factory She's making sure she is not dreaming See the lights of a neighbor's house Now she's starting to rise Take a minute to concentrate And she opens up her eyes
CHORUS: The world was moving and she was right there with it (and she was) The world was moving she was floating above it (and she was) and she was
And she was drifting through the backyard And she was taking off her dress And she was moving very slowly Rising up above the earth Moving into the universe Drifting this way and that Not touching ground at all Up above the yard
CHORUS
She was glad about it... no doubt about it She isn't sure where she's gone No time to think about what to tell them No time to think about what she's done And she was
And she was looking at herself And things were looking like a movie She had a pleasant elevation She's moving out in all directions
CHORUS
Joining the world of missing persons (and she was) Missing enough to feel alright (and she was)

There was a thread some time back about this song and how it should be SL's theme song! I think it's a damn good idea! /invalid_link.htmlArti Meant To Liveby Switchfoot Fumbling his confidence And wondering why the world has passed him by Hoping that he's meant for more than arguments And failed attempts to fly, fly We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? Somewhere we live inside Somewhere we live inside We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? Somewhere we live inside Dreaming about providence And whether mice or men have second tries Maybe we've been livin with our eyes half open Maybe we're bent and broken, broken We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? Somewhere we live inside Somewhere we live inside We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? Somewhere we live inside We want more than this world's got to offer We want more than this world's got to offer We want more than the wars of our fathers And everything inside, screams for second lifeYEAAYEAYEAAAAA We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? We were meant to live for so much more Have we lost ourselves? We were meant to live We were meant to live

Everytime I push off from the ground in SL, Lenny Kravitz starts playing in my head...
I wish that I could fly Into the sky So very high Just like a dragonfly
I'd fly above the trees Over the seas in all degrees To anywhere I please
Oh I want to get away I want to fly away Yeah yeah yeah
Oh I want to get away I want to fly away Yeah yeah yeah
Let's go and see the stars The milky way or even Mars Where it could just be ours
Let's fade into the sun Let your spirit fly Where we are one Just for a little fun

Picture yourself in a boat on a river, With tangerine trees and marmalade skies Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly, A girl with kaleidoscope eyes. Cellophane flowers of yellow and green, Towering over your head. Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes, And she’s gone. Lucy in the sky with diamonds. Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain Where rocking horse people eat marshmellow pies, Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers, That grow so incredibly high. Newspaper taxis appear on the shore, Waiting to take you away. Climb in the back with your head in the clouds, And you’re gone. Lucy in the sky with diamonds, Picture yourself on a train in a station, With plasticine porters with looking glass ties, Suddenly someone is there at the turnstyle, The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes.

I can't hear this song now without thinking of SL and chuckling a little Ian Van Dahl - Castles In The Sky Do you ever question your life Do you ever wonder why Do you ever see in your dreams... All the castles in the sky Oh tell me why... Do we build castles in the sky Oh tell me why... All the castles way up high. Please tell me why... Do we build castles in the sky Oh tell me why... All the castles way up high. Do you ever question your life Do you ever wonder why Do you ever see in your dreams... All the castles in the sky Oh tell me why... Do we build castles in the sky Oh tell me why... All the castles way up high. Please tell me why... Do we build castles in the sky Oh tell me why... All the castles way up high. -Meiyo

Ghost of Stephen Foster (Squirrel Nut Zippers)
Met the Ghost of Stephen Foster at the Hotel Paradise This is what I told him as I gazed into his eyes: Rooms were made for carpets, Towers made for spires, Ships were made for cannonade fire off from inside them (Chorus): Gwine to run all night Gwine to run all day Camptown ladies never sang all the doo dah day no, no, no (End Chorus) (Chorus) Met the Ghost of Stephen Foster at the Hotel Paradise This is what I told him as I gazed into his eyes: Ships were made for sinking, Whiskey made for drinking, If we were made of cellophane, we'd all get stinking drunk quite faster ha, ha, ha

VNV Nation - Kingdom From: someone I believe that we'll conceive to make in hell for us a heaven. A brave new world. A promised land. A fortitude of hearts and minds. Until I see this kingdom is mine, I'll turn the darkness into light. I'll guide the blind. My will be done until the day I see this kingdom has been won.

Andromeda Heights by Prefab Sprout From: someone "We're building a home on the side of a mountain Above the clouds, next to the sky And after our labours the stars will be neighbours We'll take our place with them in space
We're not using concrete or plaster or wood - They'd lower the tone of our new neighbourhood And mortar will crumble with age and neglect We're building our home upon love and respect And when we've built it we'll call it Andromeda Heights"

An appropriate song for someone leaving SL: From: someone Don McLean - Castles In The Air
And if she asks you why, you can tell her that I told you That I'm tired of castles in the air. I've got a dream I want the world to share And castle walls just lead me to despair.
Hills of forest green where the mountains touch the sky, A dream come true, I'll live there till I die. I'm asking you to say my last goodbye. The love we knew ain't worth another try.
Save me from all the trouble and the pain. I know I'm weak, but I can't face that girl again. Tell her the reasons why I can't remain, Perhaps she'll understand if you tell it to her plain.
But how can words express the feel of sunlight in the morning, In the hills, away from city strife. I need a country woman for my wife; I'm city born, but I love the country life.
For I cannot be part of the cocktail generation: Partners waltz, devoid of all romance. The music plays and everyone must dance. I'm bowing out. I need a second chance.
Save me from all the trouble and the pain. I know I'm weak, but I can't face that girl again. Tell her the reasons why I can't remain, Perhaps she'll understand if you tell it to her plain.
And if she asks you why, you can tell her that I told you That I'm tired of castles in the air. I've got a dream I want the world to share And castle walls just lead me to despair.

I perform at least two songs in world because they remind me of SL: "Girl Talk" (Neal Hefty), because I was struck when I first got into SL what a major role women play, and how much they enjoy talking/doing things together; and "You Only Live Twice" ("once for yourself, and once for your dreams" , my favorite James Bond movie theme. It's a nice topic and I'll keep an eye on this thread for more tunes I can add to my "book". (In case you don't know, I play live jazz guitar and vocals in world every Tuesday at Clementina, and at hired gigs.) I've thought of putting together a thematic show, and maybe "songs of Second Life" would be a good theme.

I hear different songs in my head when I fly threw SL. It took me a while to figure out which ones really rotated heavily.
Building a Mystery is the song. It incites a lot of the quirks I notice people have here. Or feel more liberated to explore in SL. Be it in sex, violence, creativity.
This song comes to mind when I happen on Goth-inspired builds. Or when I see those distinctively pale complexions, black leather/vinyl, smeared make up. There's a dark, sad, romantic thing about them ... I dunno.
you come out at night that's when the energy comes and the dark side's light and the vampires roam you strut your rasta wear and your suicide poem and a cross from a faith that died before Jesus came you're building a mystery
you live in a church where you sleep with voodoo dolls and you won't give up the search for the ghosts in the halls you wear sandals in the snow and a smile that won't wash away can you look out the window without your shadow getting in the way oh you're so beautiful with an edge and a charm but so careful when I'm in your arms
'cause you're working building a mystery holding on and holding it in yeah you're working building a mystery and choosing so carefully
you woke up screaming aloud a prayer from your secret god you feed off our fears and hold back your tears
give us a tantrum and a know-it-all grin just when we need one when the evening's thin
oh you're a beautiful a beautiful fucked up man you're setting up your razor wire shrine
For my plot in SL, I wish I could stream Moby's Porcelain in an incessant loop. That's more for the music not the lyrics. I like my build and all, but it's not very happy-thoughts-inducing. Kinda looks dreamy yet sad. I'd add dead things around the place but I'm too lazy to bug myself.

Nina Gordon Tonight and the rest of my life
Down to the earth I fell with dripping wings Heavy things won’t fly And the sky might catch on fire And burn the axis of the world that’s why I prefer a sunless sky To the glittering and stinging in my eyes And I feel so light This is all i want to feel tonight And I feel so light Tonight and the rest of my life Gleaming in the dark sea I’m as light as air floating there breathlessly When the dream dissolves I open up my eyes I realize that Everything is shoreless sea A weightlessness is passing over me And I feel so light This is all i want to feel tonight And I feel so light Tonight and the rest of my life Tonight and the rest of my life And I Everything is waves and stars The universe is resting in my arms I feel so light This is all i want to feel tonight I feel so light Tonight and the rest of my life And I feel so light This is all i want to feel tonight And I feel so light Tonight and the rest of my life Tonight and the rest of my life
