From: someone Originally posted by Ingot Hedges It seemed to me that it shouldn't matter if my background was white or transparent if the Alpha channel was working properly, but I selected it and filled it with white anyway.
I then went to the alpha channel and found that I had already created the appropriate mask, in black and white, so a lack of an alpha channel wasn't the problem...
I finally discovered that in Adobe 5.5, when you load an image, it automatically turns off the Alpha channel. If you want the alpha channel used, you must specifically go in and turn it on EVERY TIME. If the alpha channel is there, it's there. What you have to go in and change to see the checkerboard just changes how photoshop displays the image. In my line of work it's usually preferable to NOT have the checkerboard for the 0 alpha areas and the way they changed it for 7 is a pain in the ass for me. I might need the background for some things, but I also need the alpha channel for compositing later on. As long as photoshop saves the alpha channel with the TGA, SL will use it, regardless of the way it displays in photoshop. You can also create an alpha channel in photoshop using "save selection." If it's the first selection saved it will automatically be assigned to be the alpha channel as long as there wasn't one already. I personally find it easier to create a good alpha mask with the paint tools rather than the selection tools. From: someone Oh, Chip... For some reason, in Photoshop 5.5, you MUST do a "save copy as" or you can only save the image in the same format you opened it in. It's odd, but <shrug> that's the way they did it. Oops. I forgot about that, hehe. Been a while since I used 5. Glad they changed that! Congrats on your first texture success
