As the discussion is going in this thread it seems the Top Picks is going to be temporarily removed in place of something else. So, here is an idea I came up with:

Why not bring back the voting booths? With XML-RPC out, everyone in SL could easily vote for a particular build they wish to be on the "Top Picks" with one click of a mouse. Sure this could be "gamed" but, only short term. Here is an example:

Club X holds an event, giving away X0,000 Linden dollars. Durring this time, the club owner asks everyone to click on his voting booth so his club would appear on the Top Picks.

If builds are rotated out bi-weekly, Club X would get 2 weeks of advertisement. This is good for Club X, however, lets say Club X would not be able to appear on the Top Picks list again for 8 months. It no longer seems like so much of a "gameable" system does it?

I think these ideas would greatly improve the Top Picks listing. Do you agree? Do you disagree? Lets hear your opinions!

This is supposed to be a poll, but if it doesn't work (never done one before), just post your ideas.

EDIT: It appears I have messed up the poll and can not edit it, I am sorry, discuss away, disregard the poll.

If they cant appear on the list for 8 months, doesnt that defeat the purpose of the voting system?

Of course not, They still get voted on just like anyone else. This prevents builds from remaining on the Top Picks list for extended periods of time, it also gives other builds a chance at appearing on the list, and it ensures fresh, new content is constantly displayed on the list.

but if they are only allowed to be on there every 8 months, it does NOT ensure thats really what the people wanted...

I agree sens, I think it should be like leaders board, and if you have the votes you get the listing placement.

I am sorry, I am not following you here. Are you saying if the people want, and vote for a build all the time, that build should remain on the Top Picks list?

Here are my thoughts. Lets assume 50,000 people play SL now. There are somewhere around (wild guess) 95 sims right now. Lets assume out of those 95 sims, 82 are split into 25 parcels. This gives us roughly 2063 possible places for builds. Now, the corrent Top Picks list has 14 availble slots, so lets say the first winner has 10,000 votes. The last person has 983. If the winner can not be included in the next possible Top Picks rotation for 15 more votes (assuming voting and rotation is done bi-weekly and one parcel can not be listed for another 8 months) this gives the other 2049 parcels a chance at appearing on the list.

So over the course of 8 months, 210 parcels will be listed (if the Top Picks remains 14 slots) before any repeat. I am sure everyone would find wonderful builds to vote on while they wait for thier absolute favorite build to be listable again.

Vade you aren't making sense to me... over a course of 8 months the votes no longer matter since they will be forced to go down the ladder and pick the next then the next then next... etc etc. if you want a voting sytem fine, vote... but dont limit thier votes... thats like saying the president can not be president more than 4 years.

I do not understand... we have a "semi voteable" parcel list now, it is called "Popular Places" which is based off dwell. If we implement something exactly like it, wouldn't that be defeating the purpose?

My idea is based off (taken from someone's idea in the other thread) the Barnes and Noble, or any other book store, picks. The picks are based off from what people buy, interest, or company promotion. These books only remain for a certain ammount of time however, but they do make re-appearences.

i like the current top picks section. the linden pick what they believe are the best places to promote the game amongst new users. they then have a seperate list for of democratically elected locations that players voted for with their dwell.

That is what I was trying to say :P What I was trying to make a point of is no build should be on this list time after time. A ladder system where the top 14 are listed, then the next and so on. Thank you, you said what I was trying to say. Yes, this is an outstanding idea. People vote, then it works like a ladder system. I like it :)

Here's an idea that's similar but even less open to gaming, and it would also encourage people to use something that's presently underutilized...

Make the top pics be the places that are on the most people's "picks" list in their profile. Since the number anyone can have is limited it's not open to gaming, and it also doesn't come with the annoying busy work of a vote system. If people want to just support their own build and their friends then they can just keep the same picks on their profile. To encourage people to actually use their picks list (which I notice a lot of people don't) have some kind of clickable item that will automatically add a place to their list. A "Click here to add Joe's House of Plywood" to your picks!" sort of deal.

What I'm personally hoping to find in "Top Picks", "Quality Choices", "Eruditely Supreme Selections" -- whatever they call it -- are some most excellent places I've not visited yet, but will be looking forward to. This previous sentence refers to exploration in the future tense, as I've already visited all current "Top Picks" and am hungry to find out more eclectic locations, be they clubs or bizarro art displays, that I've not been to yet.

Maybe even a "Random Pick of the Day" -- not really random, but selected daily from a pool of growing entries that the Lindens and the community (through talk on the forum, inworld word gets around) have mentioned as being places of interest to other avatars. And it could go on and on.

Or, even a "TAKE ME A TO A KEWL PLACE SO I CAN R0X0R!!!1" button that would beam you to one of those places each time you clicked it.

Might make for some mighty exciting explorations, ya know. :)
