selling free content?

Okay, I was popping around to different areas this evening and I found a place selling textures. Only problem was, I recognised almost all of them. They are the same textures that come from the character library. FOR FREE! I had almost all of the ones (and I've never bought any textures) that were for sale.

Now, is it legal to actually be selling free content? and I don't mean selling a jillion of them packed together for convenience for L$1, I mean selling individual free textures for L$25 each.

ALso, it is not as if this was a noob who thought they got lucky and is trying to make a quick buck, this is someone who has been in the game for about a year.

so, is this a viable way to take advantage of new or ignorant players, or is this actually wrong and "illegal"?

Hi Coupe. Free content is just that -- any attempts to charge for it tends to be, uh, rip-offy. I don't think it's viable in the long term for anyone, because once word gets out, heck breaks loose. And yes, without prior permission from the original creator, I would have to also say I very much frown on this type of behavior. Scams are not a good thing! I'd gracefully inform the person charging for these textures that free stuff -- especially stock Linden library material -- is not to be charged for. Spread awareness. :)

Free stuff is cool... keep it free! :D

This kind of behaviour is not against the TOS or CS, in so far as we can tell from the utter lack of action from the Lindens in previous instances.

If you really want to give it a whack though, try abuse reporting it.

Yeah, hopefully there'll be more historical precedent and grounds to prosecute against offenses of this type... I really don't like seeing my friends being ripped off! Scammy spammy slammy. :p

Woohoo! Freebie selling is back! Yay! <shakes head in disgust>

Man, this person is a genious, a new way to find free cash other then rating parties! Dang, I can see it all panning out for this soul, time to wait for them to be selling them nifty cool little plywood cubes, and heck, those hard to find plywood spheres!

If the player selling the textures is a year old, it is possible that they sold them first and another player took them and put them out for free?

Have you checked the creator on textures?

Actually, Coupe wrote that the textures can be found in the library, so it's possible that these are the textures that everyone gets when they first create an account. If this player is selling these textures, we can probably expect them to start selling the little red riding hood avatar, parrot and even the noobie cabin soon.

I tend to agree with Garth that it is odd that a one year old player would be selling free textures, and I am intrigued. Can you post the LM to this location so we can check it out for ourselves?

The Maxim District is full of Linden and resident created "Free" stuff for sale. Prices start at $1 and up. Go to (163,134) on the second floor and you will recognize a ton of free items for sale.

Selling free content is not against TOS, as far as I know, but it is highly frowned on by most folks in SL. If anyone ever sees any of my freebies being sold (Alpine Cabin, Tubular House, Auto-rezzing Lighthouses, Greek Gazebo) please send me an IM with the name and location of the person selling. I'll pay them a little visit. ;)

It is bad form but not illegal. A well known store had scripts for sale that can be found in a well-known junkyard for free. I won't shop at that store anymore. That's about all we can do.

Just be wary about that one;

I myself had scripts that I sold placed for free in that junkyard (becuase I sold full perms), against my will or permission.

How do we know that this person didn't get the textures from the same place as the person who gave them away for free?

We are presuming that they got the freebies and stuck a price on them - we don't know that is the case.

No offense but with inaction to "Correct" offenders of this practice discussing or whailing about it is moot as nothing can be done.

Actually, this is a perfect example of a point I was about to make. As an open-source and "free" developer, I typically allow people to sell, copy, modify, etc - my scripts and objects so long as the original code and credit are still in my name.

However, I typically cut off business entirely with parties that backstab me in this (quoted) manner with regards to direct photocopies of my scripts or objects being sold, without good reason or credit rendered. This is one such example. The owner (who shall remain nameless) actually took the assets I gave him, threw them on everything he could, and immediately turned and started selling them. I have since stopped all business with him entirely, which I honestly think is a loss on his part.

Free riders happen. I typically make it a point to not get mad at them.
