Quick poll, let me know your thoughts.

In the process of trying to do too much, you often end up doing far too little.

I don't know about that. I personally think the idea is to get to the point where the community could take over and do all of this with their own tools.
I mean, the tools are out there. So are the people. Why take on a limited goal when you can focus on getting users involved and tap their nearly-limitless potential? _____________________

Providing a stable platform for the talented and the untalented to roam about.

Your poll is too restrictive - definitely all of the above, and then some. BTW, please stop using Prokofy's ridiculous wiki slur, it is quite played out. Although there is a scripting wiki, wiki use has nothing to do with content creation, so it is a stupid label to keep placing on people in some sort of derisive way.

Personally i agree with "All of the above"... sort of.
i also agree with blaze, to the degree that too many plates makes for one messy meal. i have more of a general ideal for SL/LL. my theory is that SL molds it's own direction due to the SLer-driven content. other than that, i see our path as one that should (and i use that term very loosely) head in the direction of intelligent evolution of our species via digital media. we should be the envelope pushers. we're literally pioneers in a new world.. one that we ourselves are creating. as far as LL's involvement in the direction of SL and where it should head.. i believe it should be noted that their ideas and where SL should head is not only their own, but also largely influenced by us. i know some of you are groaning, but name another currently thriving MMO that offers the interaction we have. anyhoo, i see SL and it's LL beaten paths leading towards (hopefully) intellectual and artistic pursuits that SL has a significant part in the ability thereof. i mean that all inclusively.. to include 3D modeling, architecture design, social experiments, game design, dream fulfillment, etc., etc., etc.. _____________________

I don't know what SL "should" be.
I'm sure LL has it's own ideas as does everyone else. I know what I use it for. That's pretty much all there is to it IMO. _____________________

BTW, please stop using Prokofy's ridiculous wiki slur, it is quite played out. Although there is a scripting wiki, wiki use has nothing to do with content creation, so it is a stupid label to keep placing on people in some sort of derisive way. __________________ From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. A Wiki or wiki (pronounced [wɪkiː], [wiːkiː] or [viːkiː]; see Pronunciation below) is a website that allows users to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content. "Wiki" also refers to the collaborative software used to create such a website (see Wiki software). Well, by analogy, Cristiano, working in a 3-D world and putting stuff together and making 3-D content is a wiki, Wow, can you ever learn stuff in this game, every day. Wikipedia tells you that the original word "wiki" comes from the Hawaian word for "fast" and a phrase "wiki wiki" and cabs at the airport. But I thought it came from the Native Americans' word "wickiups". In fact, I'm willing to bet that "wiki" is more likely related to the "wickiups" than to Hawaiai becaue it's more likely that the ppl in California who started using the word "wiki" got it from Indian country. "Wandering Paiute bands built small temporary huts called wickiups (pronounced WIK-ee-ups), made of willow poles covered with brush and reeds." Nowadays, a wickiup out West consists of a lot of Winnebagos getting into a circle and people hanging out and having barbecues and stuff. And that's what I picture people doing on the beta tester sims, hanging out and having pow-wows and dances in costumes and other kinds of elaborate rituals. I know that a "wiki" is a collaborative effort whereby everybody puts on a sticky. Sure. But I think there is all too much preciousness about this geeky cultural artifact. There's always so much self-righteousness and self-appreciation oozing out of a wiki as somebody is sure to selflessly volunteer to script or write something up or put something out somewhere for free. And if you argue against it, you are told you are stepping on the hallowed grounds of the Early Internet. Bah. Wikis are just subotniks and markovka and kartoshka. It's just the cybertronic version. _____________________

Like any other business venture, LL should do whatever is necessary to make SL attractive to new players (anything will stagnate without "new blood"
, as well as keep the world interesting for long-term players. The second task is probably more challenging than the first. I would also hope the creative freedom that makes SL so unique would not be sacrificed in order to achieve either goal. |

SL as a wiki is a very insightful statement.
I've heard Cory and various Terra Nova types refer to SL as a wiki, but never really quite caught on until Prok started bringing it up over and over again. I also think that SL as a wiki is a reasonable path to follow, for low bandwith easy to host text. SL as a wiki for a fully interactive virtual world that requires a development and support team is an interesting idea which will get a lot of write up in the papers or as an experiment, but as an actual real solution to a real problem? I don't think so. I think LL and ourselves needs to start solving real problems. I think Brigadoon and similar is a real solution to a real problem, and why I have said over and over again in someways it offers the only real hope that SL has. However, unfortunately the world does not have enough credit-card wielding high bandwidth folk who can overcome various challenges(such as autism) in SL whilst dealing with the real world. _____________________
