Why are so many deleting calling cards now?

Ok. I realize that calling cards no longer count towards any kind of bonus money (though we never know if that could change in the future), but they still hold a lot of great features in my opinion.

1. The only way you can drop an object to someone not next to you is if you have their calling card. Even using the "find" option, you still have to have their calling card to have this feature available.

2. The only way you can summon someone to you is if you have their calling card.

3. It is a great way to see at a glance how many people that you know are online.

Those are just 3 main reasons I like them, though I'm sure if I thought long enough I could come up with other reasons. So I'm just curious why so many people are suddenly canceling cards left and right?

I'm one of those people that cleaned up their calling card stack. I'm down to 204, from over 500 cards.

1. I don't think thats quite true. I can't check right now, but I remember giving objects via drop-on-profile to several people without having their cards. You definitely don't need one to send IM's either.

2. That doesn't overly concern me :)

3. Exactly. The cards I deleted were from people I didn't really know. I just farmed their cards because they helped my stipend. I probably never even said hi to many of those, and really talked to even less.

So the cards I kept are mostly those of the people that I want to be informed of whether they are online or not, where they are, maybe teleport them, etc.

I also checked my ratings on all of the cards I kept and adjusted it to match what I did remember of the person. So if you got a positive rating out of the blue, thats why :)

A cancelled card doesn't mean I hate you, it only means I don't remember you, which is probably at least partly my fault :)

Also, people that do fly-by calling card offers without even stopping to say hi shouldn't be surprised when those are declined.

Calling cards are returning to their original purpose, as a buddy list, instead of a penny collection.

I was baffled by this as well - I wouldn't dream of throwing out my address book even if I never saw half the people in it again.

My guess is that they just didn't notice you can now turn off the "- is online" spam in your Preferences.

One of the first things I did when I got into 1.2 was delete the calling cards of people I don't remember meeting. Most of the calling cards I had were from people who gave them to me without even saying hi. I assume it was to increase their bonus. I kept the cards only to avoid upsetting people. I didn't like getting all the messages about people I don't know being online or offline, or having to sort so many calling cards to find the ones I actually used. Since deleting them would no longer harm anyone financially, and since presumably complete strangers wouldn't mind, I deleted the cards from people I didn't know.

Thanks for the rating, Ezhar! (I did find that mysterious) :)

I got a rating from you yesterday Ezhar, so I guess that means you kept my card. weeee! hehe.. and thank you for the rating by the way, very sweet of you. :)

The number one I tested myself yesterday, as did a couple of friends. It seems that while the option to drop stuff to people without cards *used* to be there, it has been gone for me for a least a while. Though I did recheck yesterday as I stated. So at some point it must have been taken away. Or else something buggy is going on which is also always a possibility.

I do see your points. I'm one of those people that has a million bookmarks/favorite links even though I may only visit a page once every couple of years. I don't know, I just like having them. I only had a little under 300 cards anyway, as I was never really giving my card away unless I knew I wanted to see the person again. I guess we each have different reasons for our cards. Thanks for pointing out though that it doesn't mean someone doesn't like you anymore if they cancel your card. Maybe they just haven't gotten to know you as well yet. :)

I do wish to be informed if a good friend logs on. But I do not care one bit if a person logs on that all I ever interacted with was a right click on his shoe and noticing the "Trade Cards" wasn't greyed out.

I wouldn't have that persons name in my adressbook in the first place, if it wasn't for the fact that I used to get a penny for each collected adress.

While I agree so many CC's are cumbersome and they no longer count as a bonus factor my question is:

Will deleting a CC also remove from your record any rating you might have received from that person?

If so, that will impact your bonus.

I've given ratings without receiving cards, and vice versa Pituca, so I would think the two would not be related at all. That's just my guess though. Anyone else?

I like having everybody's calling card.
for some reason I'm trying to get as many as Hikaru and Devlin. :)

If you don't like having so many calling cards out and about, make a folder for the ones you don't normally use or care about.

Also, maybe you don't remember who the person is, but they might know you and want to keep your card. Because when you delete the card, you aren't just deleting it for yourself, you are deleting yours from that person's cards and maybe they want it.

I have a friends folder for the people I talk to regularily and then folders for the others.

Er, where did it say you don't get a bonus for having calling cards?

Show me proof and I too will trim my massive list :)

Well I hope it changed, Lordfly! I never kept calling cards for the bonus myself, only to avoid pissing off people who were using it for their bonus. If they're still getting the bonus, then I guess I just pissed off a bunch of people.

1. You can "Find" someone even if you don't have their card.

2. You can drop things on their profile under "Find" to transfer to them.

3. You can also send teleport invitations the same way.

4. Not satisfied yet? You can send them money via their "Find" profile too!

5. You do not lose someone's rating if you delete their card.

I got rid of all the cards of people I didn't even remember meeting or whose name I didn't recognize. If I don't remember you we probably haven't really talked or gotten to know each other so there's no point to having the card. Cleaning them out will speed up your inventory loading and make the database's life easier too.

Pendari, I kept your card because we've spoken and I remembered you. Ezhar, I kept yours too even though you told me I suck after I went the extra mile and told everyone not to be offended if I deleted their card. :D

Lordfly, I can't give you a link but it was announced by several Lindens in various What's New in 1.2 threads that calling cards will not effect your bonus anymore. There is still a category for calling cards on the leader boards so they may affect your high score but they were very clear that there is no financial benefit anymore.

Well Lordfly, hehe.. err, :o .. I couldn't point it out to you either. Just know that a lot of good friends have told me they were no longer going to count, and it seems a lot of others seem to think the same thing. Could it just be a well done rumor?

I'm so gullible I should know better than to say anything before checking it out myself 100%... And now I just admited in public to being guillible... so I'm a goof too. :p

awww.. Thanks for remembering me! That always feels good to me. :)

And I am going to triple check again these two things you say above, when I get home later today. Because right now I'm swearing you can't do this unless you actually have the card. If I'm wrong, I'll be happy because I would love those features! :)

A cleaned out calling card list is the difference for many people between the telco's white pages book and their home address book. Considering the find feature makes a much better white pages book, consolidating the calling card list into an address book should be more than acceptable.

I will probably clean mine out in the near future.

If it turns out you can't do those things it's because they removed them in 1.2 and I'll be up in arms right beside you. But I did that every single day in 1.1.

Okay, I tested it this morning, and you CAN give something to someone whose calling card you don't have. Just pull them up through the Edit - Find menu and drop the item on the lower part of their card (under their "Skills" section).

Also, it was stated in the 1.2 info email we received from LL's on Dec. 12 that calling cards no longer count toward stipend bonus:

"Calling card statistics will no longer be used in computing the bonus. It will be based entirely on weekly and overall reputation, as described above."

I doubt I will clean out my calling cards, I'm just too lazy and busy right now. Besides, I can just wait for all you other more ambitious people to do it first. :)

I had visions of clearing out my calling cards, not because I don't love all of you, but because its kind of inconvient for me to have to scroll through so many cards to find someone...

In fact, I have so many calling cards, that its way faster to just pull them up on the edit menu.

When it should be the other way around......

Calling cards are easy enough to manage if you make a simple system...

My Calling Cards Folder:

Calling Cards
+ Buddies
+ Lindens
+ New Friends

Under New Friends Folder:
+ ABC
+ DEF
+ GHIJ
+ KLM
+ NOPQR
+ ST
+ UVWXYZ

Usually once a day I move all the new cards from the base Calling Cards folder into New Friends. This way I know who I've just met that day.

Occasionally I sort the cards from the New Friends folder into the various A-Z folders, designed so that I can see each folder entirely in my list at once.

Once I get to know someone well, I move them from New Friends to Buddies.

The Lindens folder should be self-explanatory =D

Kex,

That is nearly what I have done for the past year. How usefull is that to you after you have them ordered? How often do you open your inventory to find a calling card to open someones profile?

For me the only time I don't use 'Find' (way faster than looking through my inventory or scrolling through the 'New IM' window) is if I don't know who I want to talk to. I just want to chat with a friend online. Right now that means wading through a lot of people I don't know in the 'New IM' window.

And yes, I even use the find to know if someone is online or not.

Find is the White Pages with everyone in SL in it. My calling cards should be the personal address book of close friends and family. :) I may even be able to turn online/offline messages back on again!

I've put up a post about calling cards in the Features area

/13/51/7961/1.html

I think LindenLabs needs to revamp them. (but I still have this strange desire to get them all! Gotta catch 'em all!) :D

Confirming stuff discussed here:

* Calling cards don't affect your stipend/grant bonus anymore.

* Deleting a callind card has no effect on ratings - they are separate systems.

* Yes, the finder does replace some of the 'white pages' behavior of calling cards. So it is nice to see people using them more in a friends-and-family way. That was the idea, at least as we saw it.

Thank you for pointing that out Beryl! It seems to not be labeled in the "find" menu layout the same way it is in the Calling Card layout, so I never even realized that is what that line was for. But I can visualize that line in my head clear as day now. Weeee! Gadz so many times I've wanted to drop people things and couldn't because I didn't have their card. Now to find out it was just a tad different layout. :p Well, at least now I know for certain, so thank you!

I still need to check on the summons thing though. And I'll just keep organizing my cards. Doubt I'll delete any of them. Many of the ones that I have are from new people who have shopped in my place. And I want them to still have that option even if it may not be their most simple way to reach me. Plus I just like my cards. hehe :D

Thank you for getting rid of the need for calling cards!!! Thank the lindends!

Yes indeed you can turn off onlline notification, however that silences them all, this way is much simpler, delete those you dont talk to :) I like it!
