What specialised non-SL class would you like to learn within SL?

(branched from the excellent 'what class would/could you teach' thread)

I would love it if someone would host a General Semantics class, this is something I have been very interested in for several years, ok decades, and I know we have some intelligent, or at leastlucid people in SL.

I'm sorry I missed the astronomy class that was being taught a few weeks ago. If that one got a repeat performance I would be interested. My interests in this would lean towards "entertainment", so lots of visuals and graphic descriptions appreciated.

Now THAT's Cool!

That class requires an oral report.

hehe!! here's some quotes that have tripped me out from the creator of General Semantics, Alfred Korzybski.

From: someone
"It is amusing to discover, in the twentieth century, that the quarrels between two lovers, two mathematicians, two nations, two economic systems, usually assumed insoluble in a finite period should exhibit one mechanism, the semantic mechanism of identification -- the discovery of which makes universal agreement possible, in mathematics and in life."

From: someone
"General semantics is not any "philosophy," or "psychology," or "logic," in the
ordinary sense. It is a new extensional discipline which explains and trains us how to
use our nervous systems most efficiently.

It sounds horrific! Horrible jargony, pseudo-sciencey, buy-our-very-expensive-course-here-and-fulfill-the-American-dream sort of crap.

I prefer actual semantics :)

Feng shui. I think SL would be a good way to teach this, because you could mock up a house or room and show where things should go, and use particles or something to show the chi flows and how the arrangements affect them. I'm a very visual thinker, so the books I've read on feng shui never seem to help me at all. I need some hands on examples of how to do it.

have you had any linguistics course in semantics?

anyhow, if you might want to read women, fire, and dangerous things by george lakoff since it will cover some of the topics in general semantics in detail.

I'd love an introduction to thinking in 3d course -a course explaining all the jargon in 3d graphics and which program is good for what.

I'd love to learn about colour and visual perception.

cognitive scientists and cognitive linguists are actually doing research along the lines of general semantics. "traditional" semantics fails to account for some phenomena properly.

the problem is the general semantics sounds like the "sapir-whorf hypothesis" which gives lotsa people the heebie-jeebies.

It sounds a bit like a New Age cult :(

I have a degree in Linguistics - but did very little semantics. Pragmatics I liked, if that counts as semantics. The semantics course I did was too concerned with logic.

Wikipedia's article on General Semantics includes the following "From this beginning, Korzybski developed a complex, controversial, jargon-riddled system of what he called mental hygiene intended to increase the student's effective intelligence. Techniques such as indexing with superscript numbers help in this task...After 1955 they became popularly associated with scientology but continued to exert some influence in psychology, anthropology, and linguistics. The development of Neuro-linguistic programming owes debts to General Semantics."

This may not be neutral (Wikipedia jargon NPOV) but it certainly sounds as scary as hell.

could be... i took cog sci at uc berkeley ;)

one of the problem is that people take some of these ideas and go down the rabbit hole.
the other problem enough people freak out about some of these topics to make really funny strawman arguments, and the strawmen stick around better than the actual theories.
and for some reason linguists tend to over extend their theories into other domains...

george lackoff spends lotsa time trying to root the use of language in cognition, and rooting cognition in the body. sadly lakoff has started going off the depend, and over-extending his theories into other fields :(

im me of you want talk about this... (as not to bore the forums with this)

Astronomy as well. I am really looking forward to the next class by OmegaX. :)

Aimee, I snagged a transcript of the entire class, I can send one your way if you would like. I know it's not the same as being there, but there is some great info in it. I also took close up snapshots of all the visual aids, i.e, photos and charts, etc.

Oh wait..hmm..would have to be able to hear it clearly to speak it fluently. Perhaps using "Teamspeak" or Skype"?

I would really like to brush up on my German, and learn some proper Spanish and/or Korean.

I am afraid my Spanish is more or less street Spanglish, and that my Korean is sort of babytalk-esque, or so I have been told - I blame that on my ex - she taught me. :D

French would be cool as well, but I would like to finish and/or correct my bad Korean and Spanish first. :)

does anyone have a good outline for teaching the basics of building?

i've had some people come by to customize their own bears, and they've need a basic course on making prims, coloring prims, linking and unlinking.

an outline on rotations and cutting would also be appreciated.

could you include time estimates to go through the material?

thanks
