The Dremil dealie, never known anyone not to have a GRAND time w/that. My dad the gadget man, enjoys that, is considering the cold solder pen too, but the item he's bonkers about these days is his drill press, it's very adjusteable and not huge and not too loud either. Also, he's nuts about his very, very heavy duty tool BAGs out of cordura, as well as the tool box/step stool/mini seat out of rubbermaid (I think) high-impact plastic. Handy as hell and sturdy as all get-out.
He bikes (pedals these days) and got himself a bike stand, the kind for working on the bike. It suspends the bike so he doesnt' have to stoop, and can rotate it upside down w/a quick release and one handed turn. Good for cleaning it, changing the chain, etc. Makes his lil obsessive-compulsive heart glow. He does model building too, an airplane last summer. Let my niece crash the heck out of it, then he got to fix it. Perverse joy there. Oh, and NOW he's into building train sets, Zero guage and thereabouts. One oval loop he fit into a briefcase, power supply and all, for the railie on the go. We won't talk about his other hobbies, really, well naaaah. _____________________

One where I can't read any of it so I will instantly give up instead of actually being able to make out 1/2 of the letters which requires me to read & re-read this 300 times, giving myself a headache and finally giving up still having no idea what you are saying. hehe _____________________

Do you happen to know where he got the tool bag and step stool Madame Maracas? With the remodeling we are doing, both of those would be really good. Actually, I'd like the step stool with all the wall paper scraping I've been doing. Cool - I can buy him something that I plan on using. I was thinking seriously about the doorbell but there is just one little problem, I'm the only one that would hear it as he lost about 3/4 of his hearing from some kind of a big gun in the marine corps. Then again.... with him not able to hear it, I could really put some interesting songs on it. Thanks everyone for your great suggestions! I did order him the cold solder pin. . _____________________

While it's probably not appropriate for this birthday, in the future you should negotiate the elimination of gifts. In our family, we have a policy of exchanging no gifts among adults. Most people do not need or want what's given to them, while those giving the gift often put and carry that expense on a credit card. We are then forced to go through the disingenuous process of looking pleased, only to later discard, box, or donate the gift.
For myself in particular, I won't accept gifts unless they are necessary and negotiated ahead of time as something the family needs. If one still insists on spending money on me, I am always thrilled by a donation to the ACLU. I also make it clear that any unsolicited gifts will go straight to Good Will. One has to be tough for a couple of years but after everyone adapts, it takes an enormous amount of stress (uncertainty, procrastination, cost) out of holidays and birthdays. So what do we do instead of gifts? On Valentine's Day we drove up the coast and had dinner by the ocean. On my Birthday we went to our favorite German restaurant and pigged out. For my mother-in-law's birthday we offered to fly her out to San Francisco and stay with us for a while. Remember, consumption does not equal love. ![]() ~Ulrika~ _____________________

Problem is, even at 61 hubby is a child at heart and I can not bear to see that sad puppy face if I [only] gave him a donation to the ACLU (particularly since he's a conservative). I just know him well enough to know that secretly, he really wants a cool, inexpensive toy. LMAO - though since I support the ACLU, I should order a membership for him too and slip it into an anniversary card next month. Great idea Ulrika! Seriously. Though I'm sure it will ilicit more of a growl than a grin, it will be worth it to see his expression. (Being married to me is always a barrel of laughs). Personally, I'm a lot easier to please, bring me an animal that needs rescue or any sort of plant and I'm happy as a clam. . _____________________

He loved the cold solder gadget! Put the batteries in right away and started touching the tip to see how hot it gets (typical male behavior). "Why solder metal when I can solder my index finger quicker?"
I took him to dinner last night at our favorite little Mexican place too. I think he had a nice birthday. . _____________________
