I want a robot.

I want a Second Life robot/droid/automaton servant. A scripted object that does intelligent, practical things, and obeys my bidding. Who can furnish me with such a device? Or a script for such a device? What cool things can they do? Why, I imagine they could do most anything!

If I remember correctly, through all the FIC supplied methamphetamine haze, Tcoz Bach has (had?) a robot servant. Maybe try contacting him.

I'm part robot (which makes me cyborg, but whatever...) and this is a great idea, Pol. It gets me excited, except for the fact that your robot is gonna be so subservient, which makes me sad. Hehehe.

But seriously, I would imagine the model of an inworld pet (like the successful moogles and Driftwood's dogs) taken and applied as to be more mechanical. The process is applicable. Perhaps even like Stuttering Bill servicing Dandelo in Stephen King's last book of The Dark Tower.

Something tells me someone like Eckhart Dillon might be an appropriate person to ask -- he's made warbots but maybe he can make peacebots too. There are some more robospecialists... hmmm...

An interesting project to be sure. =) Maybe define "intelligent, practical things"? Drones can be scripted to do all sorts of useful stuff. What are ya thinkin for this one?

Ah, the horrors of Cardassian torture.

I was hoping people could tell me about the things they've built their robots to do. I'd like something multifunction. I'll brainstorm a few things:

It could follow me around, or patrol a particular area, depending on my needs.
It could measure SL performance, and report it upon request.
It could greet visitors to my plot in Barcola, and give them free gifts.
It could tell the time, and light up at night.
It could act as an usher at events.
It could be a bouncer.
It could be very small, and unfold into a vehicle for six.
It could display movies (1.6).
It could be a set of four robots that sometimes combine into a single robot.
It could have pretty status lights...in fact, just by looking at what color(s) it is I should be able to learn a whole bunch of things about the environment around me...is it a PG sim? Is it lagging terribly? Is someone trying to kill me?
It could teleport people to other interesting locations.
It could accept objects and transmit them as well.
It could talk to me whan I was lonely.
It could rez structures when needed...a seating area for events, or a monolithic monkey head for special occasions, or a landing pad for vehicles...

I have to leave now, but there's some ideas for starters.

Nearly all of those are possible, minus perhaps teleporting folks to places other than home and querying mature / PG sim status. The monolithic monkey head rezzing functionality is pretty key, yeah.

The drone-to-vehicle-for-six morph would be really sweet. I'm building along similar lines another giant mecha suit. Delusional minds think alike? =)

This reminded me of Pixel. He was a friendly little floating robot, that could do a great many of the things you listed. Pixel used to follow me around like a puppy, but alas, I was a very neglectful master. I abandoned him at home all too often. Eventually I think he committed suicide.

I miss Pixel, but I miss his creator even more. Radium Lumin, are you still out there somewhere?

Eckhart Dillon makes some of the best semi-autonomous robots in SL. Look him up and tell him I sent you. I'm sure he'll have something to your liking.

My bots do indeed greet you...before targeting you and attempting to zap you. They path, report stats to me (sort of interesting to "see" the game through roaming virtual robot eyes while looking at an offline webpage...) and so on. And all before the boundless luxury of 64k!

Unfortunately, since I'd have to give up my dumbed down implementation of the A* pathing alg to provide you with it, selling the script hasn't been an option. How am I supposed to take over the world if everybody is running the same droid?

I've mentioned a couple of times that I wouldn't mind teaching a BBB class (Basic 'Bot Building). I'd need a lot of stated interest though, and it wouldn't be free since it would be a decent amount of RL work to put together.

You know, I've been coming at it from the angle of "what's possible now." I hadn't really considered the idea of NPCs because, well, it's Second Life...we make enemies out of the people we meet everyday, so who needs AI-driven adversaries?

Personally, I don't think we'll ever have Linden-generated NPCs, but as scripting becomes more robust we'll see some player-generated ones in the not-too-distant future. Intelligent agents that can do stuff for us. That would be cool, and very useful.

I got a new version of Pixel from Radium a few months back. As far as the automated update-checker is concerned, I think she’s still got a place in-world, though there’s been no update lately.

The current version provides you with a bracelet that let’s you rez a pixel (complete with a custom prefs file, if you like) as many times as you like. As many pixels as you need. I often leave one on guard at home – and post another one up high at my 500 meter platform. Then I know who visited either place while I was gone.

The bracelet checks for an upgrade whenever you put it on and upgrades itself automatically. Just get rid of the old pixel (this part hurts a bit) by saying Goodbye to it and watching it disappear. Then rez a new pixel.

The pixel can be customized with color, trim, name, and a few other personalizations. This is stored in the bracelet so every pixel comes out the way you like.

It will patrol a programmed path, or your property lines, or follow you, or follow someone else. And, as long as you don’t lose it in a no-script area, it will either find you, or it’s way home (I cant remember which right now, since I don’t travel with mine. Too many no-script zones).

It will also say hello to everyone it meets and hand them a note, if you want. Or stay silent and just keep track.

Although I tried, I was unable to convince Radium to arm the Pixel. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad, though a kill ray would be SO cool – especially if it apologizes sadly while it’s killing you

There are a lot more features I don’t use myself. If you drop me an IM, I’ll try to meet you in-world tonight and give you a copy of the manual.

Radium seems to follow a pattern of leaving us for long periods of time, returning for a few weeks of incredible production, and leaving again. If anyone has seen her lately, please let me know. If not, then I suppose we’ll have to wait.

I don’t know if she has set up an automatic pixel vendor at her property. I guess we can find out together tonight.
