OMG some of you are fuddy duddys and must be about as much fun as watching paint dry.
Being a kid and going to school is not just about reading, writing etc.. one of the greatest things a child learns in school is learning to socialize with other children and the differences between them, wealthy, poor, Christian, Muslim and learning to be tolerant (and hopefully accepting) of the many differences.
It is simply a cute, fun activity for the children and, as was mentioned, breaks the monotony of the day to day schedule / regimen and provides a cute theme. Many of us as adults, could use a little more of that ourselves to help get our collective heads out of our... *cough* Uhm.. where was I?
THEY ARE CHILDREN, they do not need the sterility of life that is forced on many of us through the eternal idiotic struggle to be "politically correct". They have a working adulthood ahead of them to trample the fun and enjoyment out of life. Allow them to be children and have fun 10-12 days a year on holidays, be they "Christian" holidays or not.

These are very sad times to be an American but where is the rage among the citizenry? Where are the flag wavers who so laud the freedoms symbolized by a flag and written by quill pens in our constitution? Why are we not rallying in the streets against this sort of attrocity? Why because we are gluttonous lazy bastards who say it won't happen to me so who cares. --Ishtar Pasteur

From: Kendra Bancroft Did it occur to you that it isn't being banned for any religious reasons, but is being banned because it's a painful holiday for kids with no boyfriend or girlfriend? Yeah it sucks to be left out

The fact is that not every student is allowed to participate in Valentine's day due to one reason or another. I'm not sure what that reason is, but the fact that the door is basically shut in their face saddens me. I remember in school when we'd have holiday parties and kids who didn't celebrate were required to go elsewhere. WTF is up with that? At the time I didn't think much of it because I was busy enjoying myself and since the other children were out of sight, they were also out of mind. It is a shame. There should be no activity in school that closes the door or causes a child to feel like an outcast for their beliefs or lack of traditional holiday celebration. Saying that children need to be hardened by hurting them is bullsh*t.

I'm with you Pleze. I was one of those akward kids that got to watch everyone else with their heaps of valentines cards and I'd get maybe one. Nothing like taking time out of the school day to reinforce children's dangerously low self esteem When I was in fourth grade I had the most creative and amazing teacher in the world. Her name was Mrs. Gage. All around the room in her class on the walls were little packets. Each one contained a project with every subject imaginable. When you finished one you picked out another that sounded fun or interested you. I remember painting a huge mural of dinosaurs as one of the projects. She made learning fun, individual, and let you do things at your own pace. The world needs more teachers like her, not more excuses to hand out cupcakes.
