I was very much against the exhorbitant taxes we had way back when. I do not advocate, at all, a return to the old tax system.

However, I'm a firm believer that there needs to be something in place to remove "excess" L$ from the economy.

We don't have enough money sinks to counteract all of the extra money that gets "printed" every time a new member joins (especially if they were referred) or every Tuesday when they "print up" new money to issue stipends & bonuses. (No, I do not advocate removal of stipends and bonuses. I don't think someone should have to "work" in order to participate.)

Not that I really have any good suggestions of ways to do this that I haven't suggested before (with flames resulting, of course.)

Two Words: Consumption Tax

Make people pay to consume things like teleporting, buying tshirts, etc... As you consume, you pay.

This reminds me of the Golgafrinchams in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. When they decided to use leaves as currency, they quickly had an inflation problem b/c there were so many trees around. Their solution was to embark on a campaign to burn all the forests.

Exactly!

I would like to see a return to the old pay-per-teleport system in combination with the current hub system.
the hubs are great, and the whole free aspect is great and those things definitely should stay, but sometimes you just need to get somewhere fast. being able to pay to tp directly would be a great option to offer those who consider the service worth the expense. options are good. :)

You don't need extra taxes. It's really not hard and its an answer most every land baron hater should love... increase auction sales in L$, especially large parcels and full sims at least temporarily; pressure buyers to either retain larger sums of money on hand or buy and sell on the exchange (rather than just dumping like most barons do). Either way the money would vanish into Linden holdings or be just as inactive in speculator accounts. Of course, LL would have to forego the direct cash payments on those auctions but as a temporary measure it would be quite easy and get the job done no matter how much of an inbalance there was. But which programmer is going to make the call and decide when its time to happen? ;)
