OK, this is getting out of hand.

Federal crashed at 11:15pm today while I was trying to build on my land.

Before it crashed, I saw better than 40 people on Federal.

We all know that Club Elite is the place to be on the weekend; the shere volume of sustained traffic that BJ gets is enough to prove that. This is not a slam-BJ thread either, it's a complaint about the lack of resources given to a known hot spot.

At what point are more resources going to be given to Federal so we don't have to deal with crashes and server lag?

The sims all have the same resources. With the upcoming release of version 1.4 sometime in June, specifically the switch to Havok 2 a couple weeks later, the cause of most sim crashes will be vastly reduced, if not eliminated completely.

So in answer to your question, I'm going to say, one month minimum, two months maximum.

It will be severely mindblowing if Havok 2 -actually- does that. It will be supremely soul-shattering if it actually reduces lag.

Don't get your hopes up for Havok 2.

And I don't think it's possible to just 'dedicate more resources' to a sim.

Hell, I'll contribute a few hundred to the cause if they will go out and get a quad-Xeon with 2 GIG of memory... that would hopefully solve any hardware issues... *grin*

i was thinking about this recently and started to wonder..

what if there were TWO servers per sim? reduce lag? increase prim count? i know it could also double the inherent cost of land, but it would have some really cool results, yes?

It would be very cool, Cybin, but... Twice the servers, twice the cost of land. :)

No, Havok 2 is unlikely to affect anything but server-side lag resulting from physics calculations, and even that may take time.

What it will do is solve the "deep think" problem that results in 99% of all sim crashes.

It's sort of possible to dedicate more resources... if the effort was made (I expect that it will be at some point) to let the SL server take advantage of multiple processors, then a multi-CPU server would likely allow for better sim performance. In the meantime, buying a $5000 server rather than a $1000 one would likely allow for a speed increase as well, it'd just be really expensive.

Umm I crash in Leda about 3-4 times a day, and sometimes I am the only one in it...

I actualy doubt adding more power to a sim would help crashes, people would likely just crash it the same. I could be wrong though. :P

I was in federal once by myself, and the FPS was actualy about average. But then when the people count got anywhere above 10 it would shoot down to low tripple digits to double digits.

So i'm not sure if its, object lag then plus people, plus people wearing scripts/objects, plus whatever is running in the sim, that does it or not.

If a sim is crashing when just one person is in it, I'd think its from a rogue script or something (don't quote me on that or go off looking for one just cause I said that, just an un-educated guess :P), I'd IM a linden about that.

I don't know why some older sims like Federal lag, but they do, I'd suggest, and I know this isn't going to happen, but I'll suggest it anyway, that when ever anyone has a large scale event in a sim that everyone kinda knows lags, to ask everyone at the event to detach any un-needed attachments, especialy high object count or script count attachments.

Also keep in mind that object density (a great deal of prims condensed down to a small area) and Listen scripts in great ammount contribute a great deal to killing sim FPS.

Theres been a few threads on sim FPS that you could search for that might help.

If LL could come up with a way to stop the porting of other avatars into a full sim that would help. Being that you can't port home in a full sim surely they can control the amount of people being ported. If I can't go home why should others be allowed to enter the full sim.

Have you been through Jenner/Gualala lately? Even if there's not another soul in either sim, I get so lagged my SL stops responding.

Thank the gods I sold my Jenner land a couple days before the lag factory moved in. Best decision I ever made.

And lets hope we all do not have to buy new computers to accommendate Havok 2. Some people would not be able to afford new machines

So many are complaining about lag in sims that contain very few people that I really question what exactly causes lag. I am not a computer tech wiz so forgive my layman's ignorance about this, I only know what I experience myself. I have heard lag blamed upon the number of people in a sim at an event, crappy computer systems, bad internet connections and the packet loss mumbo jumbo, too many scripts running in one build, too many textures, too many prims......etc. It's really confusing to me. For example, my land is primarily located in Mauve where I have been since early December. When the neighboring sims of Green and Aqua were sleepy quiet sims I experienced NO LAG whatsoever. I had waterfalls and particle scripts on my land in Mauve and whether I was in Mauve or Green or Aqua, NO LAG! Now, Green is no longer a LInden campground and there are nice for the most part residential builds, but Aqua is a now a lag nightmare. I am using the same computer, same cable internet connection but now when I am on my own land (which is catacorner to Aqua,) I get such severe lag that I frequently have to teleport out in order to have clothing rez. I have asked so many why the lag in one sim would affect neighboring sims on the border of that sim and really what I have gotten replies that dont explain why i did not have lag before Aqua became so laggy. Some have told me its my computer....its my cable connection...its my adjacent neighbor's meager rotating sign on the roof of a store, it's my waterfalls, its my neighbors waterfalls......sorry, but all of these conditions existed before Aqua became so laggy and I had no lag in neighboring Mauve and Green. Also, my boyfriend who has a super computer with high speed internet gets the lag too so I dont buy that its a problem related only to my hardware or internet connection. At one point I removed everything on my land, every prim particle and script to compare the lag and it still existed so no, it is not totally my own build. Others have told me that there are parent/child server set ups and perhaps its a linden server issue. I fully admit I know nothing about that and dont know what that means. I dont intend this thread to become a "I hate the builds in Aqua" thread, I sincerely want to know what is causing the lag. So computer wizards who read this, please tell me, how is it possible that the lag in one sim affects land on the very border of the laggy sim? For those of you who own land in sim on the very border of Federal, (or other laggy sims,) are you affected by the lag? Please HELP me sort this out, and no personal insults against anyone please, lets stick to an adult discussion about LAG! Thanks!
