From: Agatha Palmerstone The "soil" does not belong to the federal government. It belongs to the people who own their particular patch of it. On that patch, they should be able to burn whatever the hell they want. That is not exactly true. If a foreigner buys some land here in the USA it does not all of the sudden become foreign soil. To say that it is still American soil is very accurate regardless of the owner. That soil is under local, state and federal regulation, which legally put limits to what you can actually do on that soil.

From: Chip Midnight The above would be precisely why our rights are being taken away and our citizens are starting to be treated as terrorists by default. So you advocate the very thing you are against? Like I said before, until people give an inch and find some common ground most of these discussions are just poo slinging. If you want someone to take you seriously try using more substance to the discussions. You wonder why we roll our eyes when someone goes "OMG Large US Flag! A cop in black! Nazi Germany! Im moving to Canada!" and dont provide any detail. Im just a simple man. Tell me your story. Provide some proof or examples and then I'll weigh it all and decide myself. But do you really expect to get your point across if every story is "the us is nazi germany" and "the us army is killing millions of babies"?

From: Eboni Khan I think you should be able to burn the flag legally. I also think if I walk past someone who was on fire after setting the flag on fire, I wouldn't piss on them to put them out. Burn baby burn! From: Eboni Khan That applies to all Americans. If Americans were so concerned about the constitution, there would be a revolution in this country and we would over throw the corrupt government that steals from us (taxes) and tramples our rights. Instead everyone is fat and happy and rich (yes Virginia, even the poor people in the US are rich), and too lazy and comfy to do anything. Don't just blame it on one group. Everyone is willing to bend the rules when it benefits them. Eboni just made me swoon! Hope she isn't opposed to stalkers!

From: Billy Grace I do not see a single good reason why on American soil people should be allowed to burn the American flag and will leave my comments to that.
I dont see a good reason to burn the Flag. BUT i dont see ANY reason people should not be allowed to. Whether its a free speech arguement / a personal propety arguement / a personal freedom arguement. The bottom line is if its legal to burn a Blank piece of cloth in Place A .. It Better be legal to burn a peice of cloth that hapens to be a Flag in the same place. Do people have the right to be offended or disgusted by it . yes . But you Dont legislate morality. You Legislate Rights. You Legislate in order that others dont take those rights away. You Legislate to protect Lives.

Ok, I was refraining from this but cannot stand it any longer. I'm sure my answers will surprise those of you who know me.
1. I CANNOT stand images of the flag being burned.
2. I CANNOT stand government interdiction on freedom guaranteed by the constitution.
I can see this as a really bad precedent being set and I'm not happy about it in any fashion. However I will say this, if you can burn my flag I should be able to flush your Koran. It pisses me off the way things are going in GWB II. I simply cannot believe some of the crap going over the rail in broad daylight. I don't know what to do either. I'm looking at mountain real estate in Montana though real carefully.

From: Billy Grace Since when does burning a flag require speech? I do not see a single good reason why on American soil people should be allowed to burn the American flag and will leave my comments to that.
The First Amendment protects the freedom of expression and is not limited to speech. I don't see any good reason to burn a flag either, except as a means of disposal. The Boy Scouts and the American Legion burn them all the time. I feel that amending the Constitution over this is even more dangerous. I do not support it at all.

From: Lecktor Hannibal Holy shit Nolan, When were you at Bliss ? I was there Jun 00 - Jan 04 555th Maint under 2-43 ADA. Hey Lecktor! Just revisted this thread and saw your question. I was there from 84 to 86, 1/7 ADA HAWK. I was a 24 Golf - I fixed the ICWAR, IPAR, HIPAR, IFF, ICC, etc. Then I was sent to Bragg - 3/68 ADA. Man, what a different mentality I had to get used to there. Bliss was so laid back, and Bragg was so hardcore. We were attached to Airborne, had to have the Airborne patches sewn on, but we weren't Airborne, and the Airborne guys knew that of course. Man, did we get a lot of flak over that.

From: Chris Wilde Oh yeah, asking for facts and more information is poo slinging. However if I simply posted "America is the great satan!" we'd all be dancing together. You didn't seem to be asking for facts Chris. You appeared to be trying to write off the concerns expressed in this thread as some kind of hysterical ravings. What facts do you need? Flag burning should be protected under free speech. Nationalism taken overboard is a bad thing. You shouldn't have to sign a loyalty oath to see your president speak. The "you're either with us or against us" line of reasoning is a simple minded way of branding dissent as unpatriotic when in fact healthy democracy depends on it. Those are all facts. It doesn't take a hardcore liberal bias to see how those things relate to Stalinism or McCarthyism. All it takes is familiarity with history. So what facts exactly are you lacking?

From: Chip Midnight You didn't seem to be asking for facts Chris.*snipped* So what facts exactly are you lacking? Wrong. Example from a previous post of mine in this thread: From: Chris Wilde So where's a link to this economic meeting? Were they cops searching everyone? Who was at the meeting? Did the attendies request this kind of security? Were there threats made or intelligence that a suspected attack could take place during the meeting? Etc. Someone posted about an 'economic meeting' and saw a huge american flag and immediately thought of Nazi Germany. Then saw (what they think) cops in black checking people at the door, etc. Drawing a ton of conclusions but offering no facts about the incident. I then asked for more information as quoted above. Maybe you should try reading the thread?
